Which fall from grace was worse? Tony Hawk or Sonic (or something else)?

Part of me wants to say Sonic because his games have seemed to be made in a fail factory for what has now been a pretty good chunk of time.

But another part of me wants to say Tony Hawk because Sonic's descent into Failand has seemed to be somewhat gradual whereas the Tony Hawk went from being a "getting-stale-but-still-decent franchise" to a complete joke with the release of a single game (Tony Hawk: Ride).

Also, IMO, Sonic Unleashed's daytime levels were a step in the right direction. Yes, it's true that the horrible Werehog levels and overworld ruined the game, but still...good daytime levels and crap night levels is better than navigating dull overly stripped-down levels with a broken peripheral.

Then there is the matter of Tony Hawk once getting an AAAA score. That just makes Ride's reception seem all that much more hilariously failicious.

But then one must consider that Sonic 06 promoted beastiality, which is probably the lowest depth a once powerful mascot can sink to.

Damn, this is hard....:?

BTW, sorry for not including an "other" option in the poll. I accidently submitted the post too early.

Hmmm. I think Sonic is the worst. From the glory Megadrive days of the rivalry with Mario, to the current days of putting out crap game after crap game, on the same platform as Mario Galaxy no less..... You know Mario and Nintendo are smiling smugly while Sonic weeps..... Tony Hawks I never had any interest in. But at least Skate has come along to pick up that series slack. There's no real alternative for the Sonic fan...

Good point, though Sonic fans can get their fix if they are willing to play handheld Sonic games.

Hopefully Sonic 4 will be good.

THPS 2 was and still is one of my favourite games of all time. It was the chief contributor to me almost failing grade 5 (and I'm Asian). Never really liked Sonic a lot. I think that statement will tell you not only where I stand with this topic, but also how much I want to bomb Activision right now.

I played tons of Tony Hawk 2 back in the day as well. TBH, I liked 2 better than 3. I guess it just wowed me more.

Also, Sonic might be handing the fail torch to Tony Hawk.

Remember how hard-headed Sega was with Sonic, and how they kept devoteing huge amount of playtime to lame friends and slow sluggish characters that were anti-thetical to Sonic's fast gameplay.

Well now that Sega is finally doing away with all the friends, Activisions seems to have inherited the same sort of hard-headedness as they are going to try the peripheral AGAIN.

Skateboarding is too damn complex for a peripheral like that. Those kind of devices work best for carrying out simple actions, not for doing complex tricks.

lucky_star

Yeah, you do, because on the surface, that seems like a ridiculous claim.

I mean, many people seem to feel that Halo: CE was by far the best, but we're talking about Sonic and Tony Hawk levels of fail here. Halo doesn't fit, especially considering how critically acclaimed the last full installment was. Even the expansion got good reviews.

But I'm sure that provocative response will get more people to reply to this thread, so thanks. ;)

I'm not kidding. I wasn't even living at my home at the time, I was home staying and I never ever did my homework and played THPS2 all day long. I got called to office to have a conversation with Principal and Vice Principal about marks and stuff. I didn't really care back then, but now I think about it, it's crazy.

For me it would be Soldier Of Fortune series. Man the last one was pure trash compared to the Raven developed ones.

Has to be Tony Hawk, I downloaded Tony Hawk: Pro Skater 3 for my PSP and it is so much better than games like proving ground. The fact that the games have actually gotten worse instead of just going out of fashion is a real fail. They need to go back to the old style instead of trying to add all this slow motion crap and trick stick.

You couldn't possibly expect SE to throw out as many great games as regularly in the modern market they once did. It took 4 years to make FF13, just because it wasn't the greatest game ever made doesn't mean they fail. They still make great games.

Maybe they should rethink their priorities and the way they do business? And i did say Square (and not Enix) intentionally.

So you advocate a return to classic RPG style? As long as they have the regular, glorious cut scenes then thats ok I guess but I still prefer the current style.

I have alot of problems with SE's recent games (no, combat in FF is not one of them), and where they love to focus their resources. But i have expressed my disappointment on this matter countless times in the past to bother anymnore. Its just easier to put FF9 next to FF13 and wonder what the hell happened along the way.

No, that's because every game had to go with this pathetic car tuning hype ever since Fast & The Furious came out.

I like what Tony Hawk himself said about Tony Hawk Ride on Twitter

"Most snarky critics had their minds set before ever seeing/playing the game."

He is right and the same is true of the unnecessary hate that Sonic Unleashed received.

Sonic. Sega's fault really. But how many games can you play that sports a blue hedgehog before you get tired of seeing it? It has to end one day and it did.

Personally I would say Tony hawk. Sonic never got to a point or releasing horrible peripherals. Even then, sonic has atleast had a nice game new with the allstar racing game and sonic 4 should be good. Tony went from fantasy skating over and over then downgradede to a down hill racer then finally the 3.5 score disgrace tony hawks ride. I think even the worst sonic game got better scores then ride. I'm actually playing Allstar racing right now. Nice racing game that doesn't get alot of recognition even with a nice score.

Agreed. When I originally heard that Activision was taking a year off for the next Tony Hawk game l was so excited thinking they were going to take the game back to its roots. Little did I know they were just trying to rip off uneducated consumers with a big hunk of plastic that they called a game. I'll give them one last shot with a real Tony Hawk game but I have very little faith right now.

Between those 2 I'd say Sonic 'cause it was coupled with the death of a console. I know there's still sonic games, but Sonic was the mascot of Sega.

As for Tony Hawks, loved the games up to Underground 2, after that i thought they went to hell.

Tony Hawk is easily the biggest fall from grace. Sonic was never as great as people remember. It is mainly a product of its time and now that we've moved on the old games aren't that great in any way. Meanwhile, the new games aren't even that different if you ask me. People just hate them because the game has NEVER heald up outside of the genesis.

Meanwhile, Tony Hawk was a must buy for me back in the PS1, PS2 days. I even loved THUG a lot. But then THUG 2 took a hit as they tried to do way too much. Then it just kept getting worse and worse and worse. This series was killed by their corporate attempt at releasing a new version every single year. It was just too much and inevitably, all their attempts at offering more just burried what used to be good about the game.

I'd say THPS. it used to be great year in year out, and then it just turned into garbage. Sonic was always good, then okay, now its still decent to some Sonic fans and has a chance for recovery. THPS has a lot of competition from Skate now

Sonic. Tony Hawk was never good, so you can't say it was much of a fall, as it was just simply staying consistent.

I actually gotta go back a few years and say the Grandia series. The first was fantastic, it actually held its own against the similar timeline release of Final Fantasy VIII. It jsut went downhill from there. It's a shame, because Grandia has some amazing potential.

To me Sonic didint start getting bad till after SA2. It was then that i was like wtf is going on with this game series. Heroes was meh. Shadow game was crap and so forth. Secert rings was actually neat and I loved the uber sonic there. Unleashed had a chance to be great, but they messed it up with the dumb werehog crap. Its like someone has a good sonic game then some dummy comes in and says "hey lets make sonic turn into a werehog. I mean isint that great." Or some other crap gimmick.

I'm torn between both, but I'd say Sonic has to be the worst...I mean, the guy rivaled Mario at one point! And that's no easy task. As for Tony Hawk, I've got the Skate series that blows it away, so I could care less how low the Tony Hawk games can sink...Sonic on the other hand, used to be a gaming legend that made me want to get a Sega Genesis.

Sonic Adventure 2 was a good game, but in my eyes, it signaled the beginning of the end. Ridiculous amounts of playtime were devoted to Knuckles' tedious treasure hunting and sluggish mech levels.
