IMO these are the biggest culprits

halo (the one that started it all i remember back in 2001 people couldnt get off bungies nutz sacks about this one)

doom 3 (such a garbage game but people are all over it cause it looked pretty)

gears of war (cant even post a screen of a game anymore without people saying "it doesnt look as detailed as gears of war)

For me, it started with a comparison of the MK2 on the SNES versus the Genesis one. But PC games such as Half Life really drove the subject home.

FF7 was the first one to create the opinion that graphics are the single most important part of a game. Luckily, FF7 had the gameplay to back those graphics up (for its time).

100 positive. I remember purchasing a voodoo2 just so i didnt have to run at 320x240 in software mode.

GLQuake, no contest. GLQuake is what made 3D cards mainstream.

Hell no, because when UT came out...it had the quake 3 engine to deal with.

Unreal on the other hand, was single handly the crysis of it's time. Even john carmack admitted that he wished he had done some of the visuals that game had at the time, or was planning to use.

I guarantee you if you ask any long time PC gamer, what was the most visually impressive thing that you ever witnessed. At least half will go (and this is assuming you had Voodoo in glide) The first time I walked out of the spacecraft into that large open world along the cliff...

There has, and until this day still hasn't been a scene like that.... The detail, the color, the space/life...there was nothing quite like that in gaming before it.

i just bought it less than 6 months ago and I almost fell on the floor when i saw the "lego" characters jump off the train.

Seriously it was 1997, they could've at least made the characters look like they did in the battles all the time
