Lol. Final fantasy. Who the hell would want to play as15 year old metrosexual who saves the world? JRPGs are just goofy.

The Elder Scrolls easily. Oh, and just read your "FF has no competition, JRPG wise" and had to lol. That might have been the case twenty years ago, but JRPG franchises like Persona clown FF these days.

Not in mindshare and sales.

I think it would have been better to compare each to other games they are similar to. I like both Elder Scrolls and FF games but both have been seriously hit and miss over the years.

As an i.e. I love Morrowind but nothing else in that series comes even close to it, overall for WRPG's I prefer Dragon Age. Even Witcher would have been a better comparison for EO than FF.

For FF I think it's the best JRPG series out there all things considered. Stuff like Tales doesn't even touch it and Dark Souls will never be a JRPG for me it's in a league of its own.

So yeah you've picked the wrong two for a straight showdown lol, just IMO.

I mean it's nice and all that you "prefer" certain things but when coming to home game systems the eleder scrolls and FF are even now still the biggest Rpg franchises for each of their sub genres.

So the comparison makes sense.

Skyrim is the best RPG made, triggers pretend RPG experts every 5 minutes, but the world enjoys it. Nothing can change that.

I had far more good times with the FF series, largely in part to me being introduced to those games in my youth.

I didn't play a TES game until Morrowind on Xbox, later got it on PC. Then again with Oblivion on 360 that I later picked up on PC.

There was a time when I thought the FF series was one of the best series in gaming. In hindsight I don't think it's that good at all, though I could say the same of the TES games I've played.

Anyways, FF gets the thumbs up from me in this comparison as some of the games carry massive nostalgic weight and there are a couple of games that I think are legitimately good. Though I'd wager there's more fun to be had with modded Skyrim than any of the FF games.

Random note, but if you would have made this thread on this board 10 years ago, people would have laughed at you for comparing TES to FF and the poll results would be flipped around. Funny how drastically things have changed.

I think Witcher might now be bigger than both though I'd rather play any game from either series than Witcher 3 but I suppose if push comes to shove I'd go for Elder Scrolls because I just prefer WRPG's. I wasn't that taken with FFXV either it was almost painfully generic.

I'm really looking forward to the FFXII remaster though, which comes out soon. For some reason I never finished it on PS2, can't remember why. Okay vote sent for Elder Scrolls.

FF even at its worst. Played and completed Oblivion and Skyrim, both get really old. The combat is garbage as well.

Final Fantasy

In spite of how terrible XIII and XV are, FFs IV, VI, VII, and IX are all-timers (also FFT), while FFX and FFXII are not far behind. FFXIV:ARR gets overlooked a lot too, and though my exposure has been largely cursory, it seems to be the better between the MMO offerings.

BTW, I disregard mods since only Elder Scrolls has them. Vanilla versions of each and FF is superior. Sidenote: my favorite ES game is Oblivion.

Love Skyrim but definitely going with Final Fantasy. They broke the ceiling time and time again in terms of JRPG's and continually set the bar higher and higher. When they were at their peak I'd buy any Squaresoft game even if I'd never heard of it because they were just that good.

The Elder Scrolls series had two good games (Daggerfall and Morrowind), and a bunch of mediocre/crap ones.

The Final Fantasy series has had at least three good games, so if you want to go by sheer numbers...

Neither. In terms of RPG franchises probably Fallout would be my pick because Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Fallout New Vegas are quite good. Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 sucked as RPG games.

I mean those are 2 of the greatest RPG series ever.

That being said... The fan in me says Phantasy Star 2 and 4 are better than the best games in those franchises. I know they are not better games by todays standards, but I like them more and replay them often.

If you want a serious answer that can be argued... Fallout NV is every bit as good an RPG as any FF or Elder Scroll game.

EDIT: *actually reads op* in a showdown... I'll go with the series that has Skyrim

Captain of the Enterprise is in Oblivion, so it wins by default....no I'm just kidding. Look this is a tough question for me to answer, as I've played most FF games between 1-13 the same year they would release, and same with Oblivion and Skyrim.

I enjoyed Final Fantasy games immensely, and outside of the character design in FF13 and FF X-part 2, I don't have anything negative to say about them. Each one was a wonderful self-contained story with a ton of amazing moments, lots of great battles, and great times overall. These games helped shape my interests today.

Oblivion and Skyrim are different, they are more open world. Final Fantasy is a more focused, story-driven series(the ones I played anyways). I like the freedom I have in ES, so many things to consider like becoming a Vampire, etc Dialogue and writing are stronger in Elder Scrolls I find.

Today If I had to choose I would probably go with ES, more freedom and things to do, more interesting dialogue. But adjusted for time inflation, if that makes any sense, I don't have a preference....I enjoyed both series greatly when I played them, and that's how I remember them, don't want to overthink it.

Overall? FF, without a doubt. Some of my favourite gaming memories. I missed Morrowind, but Oblivion and Skyrim were okay... Nowhere near FF's best (same with being the best in ES).

Easily Final Fantasy. Elder Scroll games are boring as hell without mods and they're also some of the buggiest RPG's out there.

I prefer FF, but only X and XII

Didnt like XIII and thought XV was... ok at best

When it comes to TES, I only played Oblivion and Skyrim. I like both but, same as Fallout series, there's just something about Bethesda RPGs that... idk, dont really appeal that much to me. I still enjoy them but I feel there's something lacking. Probably characters or stories I care about, personaly

I have great love and respect for both Morrowind and Daggerfall. I don't think I have played a game that was so impressive for its time as was Daggerfall in mid 90s. However the series took a nose dive to mediocrity with Oblivion and Skyrim. Bethesda intentionally made their games worse in order to appeal to a larger audience. It succeeded of course and the Elder Scrolls wouldn't be the commercial beast that it is today if they hadn't. However it felt like a betrayal to their core PC audience at the time and the financial success certainly doesn't exempt them from criticism.

How about Final Fantasy? As far as core RPG mechanics go, I wouldn't compare any of them to masterpieces like Morrowind and Daggerfall but despite their linearity and their often convoluted plots and boring battle systems, they have a certain charm. I like them despite themselves and some of them I like a lot. My favorites tend to be the ones most people seem to hate, like FF8 or Lightning Returns. I've played a lot of them and only a couple felt disappointing.

I'm gonna give my vote to Final Fantasy.

Well I'm not gonna argue that, as I'm not really a JRPG guy at all, but I'd still play a game like FF Tactics over anything post Morrowind unmodded from Beth.

I'm afraid these arguments are somewhat baffling my freind. "oh the combat is terrible", yet Daggerfall you literally waggle your mouse for random attacks. Morrowind, = click-click-click (oh a hit!) click-click-click.

People complain about Oblivion being a boring generic world, which I agree with, but Daggerfall is literally a copy paste world. A million, kakillion miles, of nothing, with interchangeable cities. It's open world aspect is non existent. Skyrim has varied locations with dense content that range from deep mines to high mountains all hand crafted.

People complain about Oblivion's dungeons but you were lucky if you could finish Daggerfall thanks to the dungeons breaking on a constant basis, no clip was a constant.

It seems there is an unnaturally rose tinted bias with consoles.

@uninspiredcup: I didn't criticize Oblivion's and Skyrim's combat. All Elder Scrolls games are more or less hit things till they die. My boring battle systems comment was referring to Final Fantasy, compared to western turn-based RPGs and even other Japanese ones, like the Shin Megami Tensei series.

You are right about Daggerfall. It's not really an open world game. It's a procedurally generated simulation of a world. This of itself has some merits as they could present a world that was much more believable in scale. Creating detailed hand crafted worlds is very difficult and almost all games make miniature approximations in terms of scale compared for example to a real world city. That's not a bad approach. I think Morrowind had a much better world than Daggerfall. However there is some value to getting lost in a vast world, even if every other building looks the same and almost all quests are the autogenerated from the same templates. Clearly something like this wouldn't work with today's graphics.

Daggerfall dungeons were a nightmare. I remember saving before I got the next quest from an NPC and reloading if it was to kill a monster in a dungeon. Eventually you would manage to find your target in the labyrinth but then you had to find the way back out again. The mini map was awful. Sometimes I would try to glitch it to fall through walls, hoping to get closer to the exit :p Mark and recall was a must to be able to escape easily.

How can after all that claim that Daggerfall is a good game? Well for starters I played it more than 20 years ago when it was a technological and game design marvel. It offered a feeling of a vast world and was much more immersive than anything that came before. I judge the modern Elder Scrolls games compared to Morrowind which I think is the pinnacle of the series but Daggerfall has a charm that is hard to find nowadays.

Oh yea, for all it's faults Daggerfall is cool. Even though the world is barren outside of cities, it has a sense of you being a cog in the wheel rather than the chosen one running around a theme park of rides to explore. A game being devoid of over-elaborate production values (Hey look, that Dragon is arriving just at the exact moment you are!) removes alot of the triteness.. In a sense while it doesn't really have an open world, it's captures the sense of a living world better than most games that attempt strenuously hard to the point of sensory overload.

FF even at its worst. Played and completed Oblivion and Skyrim, both get really old. The combat is garbage as well.

obviously preference is an issue here.

But I don't see how ANYONE could say FF combat ISNT garbage... it really friggin is.

Menus.. attack > cure > attack cure... ultiemtely you have 2 options.. just with different abilities, most of the FF games dont require barely ANY strategy.

I mean... at least in elderscrolls I can play in a variety of ways... wether it was polished or not

@MBirdy88: I agree about FF combat. It's not like it was a prerequisite for RPGs to have boring menu combat. There are many examples of JRPGs with excellent combat that were contemporary to some Final Fantasy or other: Chrono Trigger, Shadow Hearts, Shin Megami Tensei, Resonance of Fate.

I quite liked it when they changed the combat for the FF13 games. Despite their other faults I think the combat was a big improvement over classic FF systems. (They did change the combat a lot on FF12 also but I haven't played that one, probably will once the HD remaster hits the PC).

Just because I wanted to see the results I voted for TES. At least you can get a good game out of Skyrim and Oblivion... with extensive modding to get rid of all of Pete and Toddler's mindbogglingly stupid design choices.

Bethesda are still hacks though. Being better than FF is hardly something to boast about. With its predefined protagonists, redicilous character power curves, and ATB garbage.

Edit: Morrowind and Daggerfall were both good games, rough but good. FFT is the same, combat is fairly slow and clunky in that, but its fine. The game is still solid enough to compensate.

There have been many good final fantasy games.

Yup...

FInal Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions PSP, Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions IOS, Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions Android. Maybe FF11 deserves some respect too for its influence on the MMORPG genre.

The rest are kinda crap... but hey, that is still many good games right there :D

I never liked Final Fantasy or any traditional JRPG, so it is easily The Elder Scrolls for me by far.
