I've not used the full names, just kept it simple.
So for the fans of the series, take a think and pick which you think was the best overall MGS game.

i havent played mgs4 so cant comment. but i think mgs3 is the best out of the frist three. i loved the whole jungle setting.
second place be mgs1 and then third place be mgs2
I don't think anyone should vote if they haven't played them all. They don't have all the data to complete the survey, won't stop them though.
I say, MGS1, as ut was the overall package. The story wasn't convoluted, the gameplay was sweet, and it ended just right.
That being said, I love MGS2, MGS3, and MGS4.
I guess, I would vote for MGS2 next, then MGS4, then MGS3. That's not saying MGS3 wasn't spectacular, (because it was) but there has to be a fourth place.
The fact that MGS3 you played as Naked Snake, allows for me to push it to the bottom, I'm a SOLID fan, you see.
MGS1 imo MGS2 very close second
perfect balance between lots of gameplay and lots of cutscenes
never played snake eater though
MGS1
If you didn't play at the time it first came out, then you have no right to say otherwise.
Blue-Sky
i played it when it first came out. and yet i think still think otherwise...

WHAT!!!
How could you miss that epic. Were you just a hardcore Xboxer then, or did your PS2 break? It was amazing, despite it being my least favorite (Least favorite MGS, one of my favorite games ever though).
You should just pick up MGS3:Subsistance, it has the MGS4 camera and will do you wonders.

Ps3 died 3 times on me so I switched to xbox last gen and missed out. I played MGS2 later on.I might get the subsistance version if I can find it.
I have no BC Ps3 so I cant buy the MGS essentials bundle
i think is that the MGS3 is the best ,
because it look like a reality and the quality of the graphic is like a real
i had only played MGS 1 and 3 but the 3 is e of the best game i had ever played
when you play msg3 is like you are living in a life of solder and that solder is you

My buddy has a 40gig, and he bought it anyways. Cheap PS2's will find their way to you, just shoot for a Thin model. Those MGS Bundles are not getting reissued.
How did you play MGS2? On XBOX? It was a very bad port, laggy, and the controls were wonky. They actually made MGS2: Substance for the PS2, and all around the world it was a PS2 exclusive, EXCEPT in America, where Microsoft paid for it to come out. Of course, MGS2:Substance on PS2 did have more stuff on it than the Xbox port, and it was polished with no Framerate hiccups or bad controls.
I know all this because I have MGS2: Sons of Liberty on PS2, MGS2 : Substance on Xbox, and MGS2 :Substance on PS2.
I'm a SOLID fan, what can I say? :)

Dude, go play 3 right now. Seriously. Put down whatever you are doing and go play it.

yeah I guess so. I was thinking about buying a Ps2 again anyway. But I'm scared when I do, that Sony will release a BC patch for PS3 lol.
but yeah they're getting cheaper and cheaper.
in number one when you first play it for the first time the story is very confusing and yes the gameplay was sweet and great balance between cutscenes and gameplay.
in number three you understand the story so much better and come on....who didnt think the final few stages of the game were just utter awesomeness!!!!! the fight against the metal gear and lets not forget the fight in the flower field....just so amazing
mgs2 was good i liked it but the whole raiden thing didnt do it for me, i liked the ending battles they were challenging
number four not played
Dude, go play 3 right now. Seriously. Put down whatever you are doing and go play it.
Chutebox
yeah I know I should. :P
I'm gonna start and save some extra cash and get a Ps2 during the holiday season. The stores might have some good deals then.
I felt that MGS4 lacked gameplay. Or atleast it lacked the stealth gameplay that the series is known for. The game started off fine, but halfway through, the gameplay just turned into bursts of epic moments, linked by cutscenes.
I think they went too far with the cutscenes this time. I don't mind long cut scenes - you play an MGS game, you expect it, but MGS4, later on, just becomes one big cut scene.
I never played MGS3
For me the best was the first one on PS1 and the second one on PS2 very close
PAL360
Okay, that makes 2 here that hasn't played MGS3. You have to play it!
I'm going to say MGS3, after that it's a toss between 1 and 4, and then 2.
The end of MGS3 had an affect on me like no other video game ever has. After I played it for the first time, I just sat there for the longest time.
Part 4, it's the most complete, epic game in the franchise, from beginning to end you feel like you're in something bigger then a videogame. Plus it reeks of nostalgia and fan-service thanks to Kojima's dedication to his fans.
As for 2nd place, that's a very hard one and I honestly can't choose, all 3 of them have their own pro's and con's that cancel each other out.
MGS - The first main game (first MGS one not talking about original Metal Gears), the story was the most "down to earth" even though it had supernatural elements also, it wasn't as supernatural as MGS3. It was the start of it all, and almost perfect imo.
MGS2 - EVERYONE wanted this game, or atleast wanted to see it, the graphical benchmark for PS2 at the time, showed what the PS2 could do, the watermelons breaking up into parts, all the little details were never seen like that on a console before. The liquid-arm thing was lame, but all of the other production values were top notch. I was one of the people extremely pissed when I found out I had to play as Raiden, but it didn't stop the game from being close to a masterpiece.
MGS3 - The most fluid storyline, very easy to understand, but not for little kids or people with ADD, it was just easily the least convulted. A LOT of memorable scenes (Snake getting chased by Ocelot and jumping off into the waterfall, the last fight with The Boss, The End Sniper battle, The Sorrow walk where you saw all the people you killed). The only thing about this one was it was a bit too easy, atleast compared to the other MGS games, it wasn't challenging, also some of the bosses were kinda lame, the Hornet guy was weak, and the one who disappeared in the woods, while that boss fight was challenging, the character himself wasn't fleshed out. Also however the ending to MGS3 is more epic then MGS4 imo, MGS3's ending brought a tear to my eye and was incredible, MGS4's felt a little forced with the Big Boss part, but the part where Sunny and Otacon were looking at the Sun was very starwars-like and had me teary-eyed also.
I can't pick between the first 3, it's just too hard, but I can say that part 4 is the best in the series for me.
MGS1

True Story
but man is MGS4 good
I have completed them all and I actually like MGS3 best.
Personally I think the story was the best. Its was the most streamlined, and the most epic. There were also some good plot twists. The scene where:
ocelot shot out snakes eye was brilliant and unexpected
it also had that camoflage thing which I actually liked. And it was heavily themed on being sneaky ulike the other games where you could shoot your way through. The CQC system was good too.
And all the bosses were pretty good.
