Poll Which is the best Modern RPG on this list? (117 votes)
The list is in the poll.
The list is in the poll.
Some day we'll have Nioh level combat in open world rpg's, Dragon's Dogma is literally the only open world rpg where melee combat isn't mediocre at best
voted for Wirtcher 3 since it's my fav RPG but gameplay wise Bloodborne has the upper hand
Edit : and for god's sake OP , how the heck DAI ended up on your list
Bloodborne is probably the best game of that bunch, though I do dig the combat I've played of Nioh so far, and need to play Dragon's Dogma. I'd probably say Dark Souls 3 is a better rpg than it, since it has actual build variation in a way Bloodborne really doesn't since any sort of mage build was watered down to all hell.
Beyond that none of the western rpgs in that group actually deliver on what's neat about crpgs, in the case of Witcher 3 n Horizon, the rpg part is pretty watered down. In the case of Skyrim, I'm just going to go by Oblivion/Fallout 3, where the rpg part was barely anything to write about. And I don't like Bethesda's brand of questing n gameplay, though I appreciate their sandbox and how distinct their game is compared to anything else.
@jg4xchamp: I've played tons of RPG's in my life, whether turn-based or otherwise, I've beaten most of the souls series, bloodborne, etc.
If you like Bloodborne and Nioh, you will adore Dragon's Dogma, it for sure has a better combat system then both games, but the story is awful.

I want to, my man Itsuno directed that game, and Devil May Cry 3 is masterful. And DMC4's combat engine is still the bees fucking knees. I always get out of doing it because
A: the game is apparently long as ****
B: I heard that game has a bad habit of wasting your fucking time for a lot of shit, and I'm like...eh I'll just play DMC3 for my Itsuno fix.

The original game especially is a huge culprit of wasting players time as the travel system is awful, but man the Dark Arisen dlc area is the best the game has to offer, no shitty characters or story, little traveling and a lot of cool fights. I'd honestly just skip the main game and go straight to the dlc, might not be too easy for a first timer tho
@jg4xchamp: If I'm being totally 100% honest, I think the combat system may rival DMC3's, mainly because it plays just like it.
Besides that, if you liked Shadow of the Colossus, you will love this game.
Now, if you aren't happy with the story, you can just go around and kill shit, but the further you get in the game, the cooler stuff you get to kill, there's stuff like manticore's, griffin's.
You can climb onto a dragon and stab it in the heart, and then it will try to fly off with you on its back. You slice off individual parts of it, like it's wings, its horn, its claws, its scales, which can then be harvested and sold to a merchant, or kept to use to upgrade your own equipment, it's crazy.
This game has the biggest monster variety I've seen in almost any RPG, there are so many different types of monsters and enemies your head will spin, I was near the end of the game and there was over 69 (haha, no but seriously I did count 69) different enemies, and thats not even scratching the surface, in secret areas you'll find more bosses, and if you have Dark Arisen (the obvious choice), then there's more islands to explore, there are possibly more then 200 enemies in the game.
But the thing is, the game isn't easy either, you'd think with 3 people helping you and all the different classes and skillsets, with the game being super fast-paced, the game would be a cakewalk, but nope.
You will be challenged for sure early on, and even when you get to lvl 200, which is the max level, you still will have trouble in the game, whereas I can recall if you get to Max lvl in something like Dark Souls or BloodBorne, the game becomes kinda easy. In Dragon's Dogma, if you go to BBI on hard mode, you will die, with max level pawns, using the best equipment.
Also, the customization, armor and weapon designs, everything is just so awesome, the main story sucks until you get to post-game, which is where the story becomes interesting.
Yeah its long asf (haha), and it can get repetitive, but I've never found myself once fighting monsters and being like "wow I'm actually kinda bored".
Also, the magic is the best I've seen in any game, you can shoot meteors down from the sky and shot actual tornadoes out of your staff.
Anyway man, maybe this was ranty, but trust me, if you try this you can't go wrong, if you made time for those other games surely you could make time for this, plus its cheap as hell.
One last thing that might make you pick it up, before I played DD for the first time, I was playing Dark Souls, I was having so much fun, then when I finally started playing DD, the base game, mind you, not the enhanced Dark Arisen version, I was unable to put it down, to this day I still haven't played Dark Souls, because playing it just seems boring compared to Dragon's Dogma.
@the_master_race: Dragon Age: Inquistion has the funnest combat of any Dragon Age game, the story is better then II, but not as good as Origins.
The game is definitely worth it to be on this list, it's a great game.
yep it's great if you're fan of grinding , fillers and radiant quests
here's a list worthy of your time :
1-Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition
2-Pillars of Eternity
3-Alpha Protocol
4-Fallout: New Vegas
5-Battle Brothers
6-Wasteland 2
7-Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
8-Mount & Blade: Warband
9-Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition
10-Shadowrun: Hong Kong
well Given there is a handful I haven't Played and don't consider the souls games to be RPGs (And only painfully will accept Bethesdas games as being RPGs) I will go with The Witcher 3.
I voted for the Witcher 3. I got pretty addicted to the game for a little while. Each mission was entertaining, the story actually had my attention, and well....Gwent. They made a damn game out of a game. If modern RPG's are including the previous gen, I'd probably add Tales of Vesperia or even Ni No Kuni.
From the RPGs in your list I've played, from best to worst:
1. Bloodborne
2. Witcher 3
3. Dark Souls 3 (the worst Souls game but still very good)
4. Dragon Age: Inquisition
5. Diablo 3
And with special distinction as being the only mediocre game in a list of good and great ones:
6. Skyrim
@the_master_race Great list
Witcher 3 hands down. It was really captivating even if the combat was mediocre. The story, writitng, acting, music, and graphics were all top notch.
The Witcher 3 by a country mile. Doesn't mean the others are bad just that The Witcher 3 is so much better.
Can't you change the poll to WRPG?
There are western and Japanese games on his list.
I was obviously talking about the genre, not the location where they came from.
If it was about JRPGs as well, there would be games like Persona 5 on that list.
Witcher 3.
The mediocre combat and weird loot system are just massively overshadowed by the story, characters, music, and just overall high prodution values of everything. Hell the quality of dialogue/cutscenes when talking to non-important npcs is higher quality than the main quest of many other games.
I think it'll depend heavily on what you think makes a good RPG. If you think a good RPG is rich in storytelling with an interesting world, great characters, solid character progression, with serviceable combat, then you'll probably pick Witcher 3.
If you think an RPG is more combat and progression focused, then you'll probably pick a Souls-like game.
If you think RPGs are all about dat loot and loot progression, then Diablo 3.
I find RPG to be a pretty broad term.
Diablo 3 being there is rather questionable and when you consider there are games in it's very own game that dwarf it hard(poe)..

The Witcher 3 is less an RPG than the Souls games that's for sure.
I hate The Witcher 3 so much. I've tried to get into it so many times, it just doesn't click. It's boooooooooring and janky.
I'd say Dark Souls 3, however if your not into souls like games then it's not enjoyable.
Dark Souls spoiled the Witcher 3 for me, because the combat is not as good, I found it hard to stick with the game.
Threw the towel in about 20 hours into the Witcher 3 from boredom wasn't for me
