Not counting the upcoming Absolution, which is the greatest stealth series ever?
My vote goes to Thief because it is pure stealth game, for me it is the game that defined the stealth genre.
whats your favorite?

Maybe if the poll was "game that shoves the most overindulgent cutscenes into a video game"Metal Gear, obviously. Anybody saying Thief is kidding themselves.

Does Thief still hold up? I got all the games during the Steam summer sale.mems_1224Hell yes it does. Huge nonlinear maps filled with goodies for exploration, intuitive stealth mechanics, an imaginative and original world, and a very fun and enjoyable protagonist.

Im playing through Jedi Academy right now so I might start Thief after that then.[QUOTE="mems_1224"]Does Thief still hold up? I got all the games during the Steam summer sale.PannicAtack

I'm just telling it how it is. MGS is a universally beloved franchise that has won countless awards and has rightfully cemented it's place amongst gaming's most legendary franchises. It's the best.

Yes, with Story and character developement...anything else (gameplaywise) is mediocre compared to realistic animated stealth games like splinter cell and the latest Hitman..which IMO might just out do the rest. So's Thief. Thief is near-universally regarded as not only one of the leading pioneers in its genre, but the absolute best name in the genre, particularly Thief 2.I could say "Thief is a universally beloved franchise that has won countless awards and has rightfully cemented it's place amongst gaming's most legendary franchises" just as easily as you say MGS. What exactly is it about Metal Gear Solid that makes it the best stealth series and not Thief?

And Thief has all of those.[QUOTE="Master_ShakeXXX"]The storytelling, universe, characters, gameplay, production value, etc.ZevianderMGS is "tactical espionage acton" not stealth.
It's considered stealth. The "tactical espionage action" thing is simply a tagline.
By that logic Splinter Cell could be considered tactical espionage action.
By that logic Splinter Cell could be considered tactical espionage action.Master_ShakeXXXMGS rewards both stealthy and action-oriented strategy equally. You can go through any game without being detected, or full guns blazing. A proper "stealth" game requires that you do not get detected, and makes it impossible to advance until you are able to complete the objective quietly. Thief makes it almost impossible to survive when detected, let alone do anything further. And I have only played a little of the second Splinter Cell, and don't recall it rewarding guns blazing strategy. In fact, I remember having a problem trying to play it like I played MGS.

Still doesn't change the fact that MGS has always been considered a stealth game first and foremost. Which game has the best stealth mechanics is another argument entirely. TC never went into specifics. He merely asked "which is the best?"
Thief for sure. It pretty much defines stealth in video games. No game has ocme close to capturing the esence of stealth than Thief.
Still doesn't change the fact that MGS has always been considered a stealth game first and foremost.Master_ShakeXXXBy who exactly? People who haven't played Thief I guess. There aren't even any mechanics related to lighting and using shadows to avoid detection. Even Syphon Filter had that.
Also, and I don't like doing this, but if we were to compare the metascores of each individual game from each franchise, you will see that MGS is far and away the most consistent series. It's one of the most consistent franchises ever.

By the mass majority. Lets not kid ourselves. How often do you see MGS referred to as anything other than stealth?

There have been like three Thief games, all with consistent quality. MGS is great, but as far as pure stealth (grounded in realism) Thief takes the cake. MGS has way too many "gamey" elements, where, in Thief, if you get caught, you're pretty much screwed. MGS you can shoot your way out of most situations.
You aren't giving an answer. You stated that MGS was the best series, and that people were fooling themselves if they said Thief was. That is a bold assertion, which you have not backed. How does MGS do stealth better than Thief? Also, and I don't like doing this, but if we were to compare the metascores of each individual game from each franchise, you will see that MGS is far and away the most consistent series. The same mass majority that also regards Mass Effect as an RPG? Because it´s the exact same thing, like ciomparing Mass Effect to say,Baldurs Gate.
Considering your usual opinions I would think you´d be the last person to come in and talk about majorities, but I suppose that suits your argument this time.
MGS is barely a stealth game, especially when compared against the prime of the genre,Thief.

I'll answer for him: It doesn't. MGS is a good eries but Thief puts it to shame in terms of pure stealth.
