For me, just good ol' Half-Life 2. Half-Life 2: Episode Two was close, but the beginning of it wasn't that good, but the end really picked things up. In my opinion, Half-Life 2 had an amazing beginning and an okay end, while Half-Life 2: Episode Two had an okay beginning and an amazing end. I'm talking about gameplay-wise. I just didn't really dig the cave at the beginning and how I was only fighting Ant Lions for quite some time. The good thing about Episode Two was that it had better graphics, some plot twists, a new character that nobodoy likes, and improved AI.
The reason I pick Half-Life 2 is because it was more memorable. The experience was long, epic, and I just loved the atmosphere and the beginning of the game and the fourth chapter in Ravenholm. Sometimes I was taking down zombies in a rundown town, sometimes I was taking down aliens in the middle of a city, and most of the time I was fighting off zombies, aliens, and humans. Pretty sweet. Episode Two ended so soon, and didn't feel as fun as Half-Life 2 because, while good, I got a "been there, done that" feeling.
Half-Life 2: Episode One was unimpressive and a game I could do without. It was good, but just not of the same caliber as Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode Two.
I never played Half-Life 1 because I thought that the game may be a bit dated by today's standards, seeing as how FPSs have progressed in ten years. I don't know, though. It's only ten dollars. It wouldn't hurt, I guess.
