as much as i love pokemon, i gotta give the edge to mario series, precisly due to super mario rpg:legend of the seven stars, one of my favorite games of all time easily
I think Super Mario RPG on the SNES is better than any singular Pokemon game, but the Pokemon games as a whole are better than the Mario RPGs as a whole.
I haven't played any of the Paper Mario's but I know that Super Mario RPG is better than any Pokemon game. Pokemon, for me at least lost most of it's appeal after they went past the original 151.

Both carry traits of a RPG, so they are obviously them. What genre would you put them in then?

3. most importantly you are able to interact with other characters emotionally within the game

I guess I am a bit of a classicist. In the good ole' days, that kind of customization was not possible. What you're speaking of is what some RPGs have developed into, namely most Western RPGs. Most JRPGs (the Mario RPGs, Pokemon, Final Fantasy, etc.) may not fit the criteria you listed but are still infact RPGs, perhaps in the purest form.

Go play PC RPG's from 10 years ago.
Actually, go back 20 years ago to Pool of radience and similar games
EDIT just to make it clear JRPG's evolved out of western games, I think as a younger console gamer you haven't seen the genre develop

Yeah but Mario also had games like sunshine, so mario has overall more good games than pokemon and overall SUPER BAD GAMES ....So pokemon is just the same game...so pokemon wins
