Ok here's what's up.

I have an Xbox 360 and a PS2 hooked up to an Old TV, and I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my "game budget" I'm allowing myself to use this season. I should have enough to do one of these two things.

Personal HDTV with Fallout New Vegas for 360/COD: Black Ops for 360

or

PS3 160gb slim with MGS:4/MGS:Rising on pre-order.

I'm not sure what to do with my money. I really want some good single player games and the PS3 has some really good ones, plus the better specs are a plus although I'm fine with the 360's capabilities. On the other hand I really want to play MGS4 and haven't gotten to play it yet. But I'd still use the 360 for it's exclusives and multiplayer.

If I got the HDTV with the two games I'd be happy because I'd finally be able to utilize the 360's HDMI abilities and also it's just good for watching the little TV I do watch whenever House or something good on Comedy Central is on :). Also If I got the PS3 I wouldn't be able to get the above games til christmas.

What do you guys think?

Thanks-

Nick

EDIT: Sorry if this is in the wrong spot, I really had no clue where to put this based on Forum Descriptions.

I'd say get an HDTV. You might as well get up with the times and plus, the Playstation 3... maybe you could get it sometime after you get an HDTV so then you can take advantage of its Blu-Ray capabilities.

EDIT: Sorry if this is in the wrong spot, I really had no clue where to put this based on Forum Descriptions.
It should be fine I think. After all, the PS3 is a gaming system.

My suggestion would be just stick with the 360 and your tv for now and wait until the 3d tvs or whatever the next tech is to pickup and then you can invest on it. You'd be saving up until then.

It wouldn't make sense. He buys an HDTV and everyone is already starting to make the transition to something else.

Since when did the masses start making their transition to 3DTV? By the time those even become mainstream they will be cheaper and probably better(assuming they even catch on). Get an HDTV TC, and enjoy it. You have a great deal to learn drspudz.

I'm not really into that whole 3D thing. I don't think it's a total gimmick. But I prefer my games simple, but in good quality. Plus I don't think they'll release any small 3DTV's for a while and I don't have room for a really big high-end tv.

I would go ahead and buy the PS3. You said there are games you want for it and the PS3 and 360 can play on SDTV. Then you can start saving for a really good TV that will pretty cheap by then.

Agreed, TV prices are always falling so when you can gather up £400-500($900) then you can go out and buy a slightly better TV than you would have done if you went tomorrow and bought one... PS3 will not change too much, only HDD size which is as cheap as chips anyway.

What do you do more: play games or watch TV?

Do you have the ability to get HD cable or satellite?

Also, what kind and size of HDTV are you getting? A 160GB PS3 plus MGS4 and preorder of MGS Rising (which isn't even coming out until 2011 at the earliest) is $380 plus tax (assuming you're american). The 360 games you mentioned are $120 so that means the TV is in the $260 range. Why not save up to get a better than $260 TV. You can get a nice 32" LCD in the $350-450 price range.

You already have a 360, so I'd just get an HDTV. I'm sure you'll be blown away by the 360 on your new TV and probably make you feel like holding off on the PS3 for a while.

I may be wrong, but I would assume prices of HDTVs are reducing faster and will continue to fall, but I don't foresee the PS3 reducing in price for another year at least.

This. It doesn't really matter which one you own, as long as you don't absolutely hate the console, the HDTV will make it better.

HDTV.

As for 3DTV, not going to replace HDTV anytime soon, if ever. It took HDTV a good 10 years or more before it reached a majority of American homes, and about 15 years or more for Color TV.

If thats the case, I think its bound to change. Eurogamer recently did a peice with the Motorstorm guys on how it can make the game more intuitive and in depth--a return to hardcore gaming, I suppose.

didnt realize people were still using CRTs, they make games look like poop.

Everyone as in, incredible expensive new tech that could dissapear in the next 2 years and nobody is really buying it right now?

On topic, TC, you should go for the HDTV, and get the HDMI cable for the 360, you won't regreat it, you can save later for the PS3.

He has a 360 which will look just as good. Still, if he buys a crappy $260 HDTV, he'll just want to upgrade to something better. He's going to have to at least pay $300 for a decent 32" tv.

This, this and more this.

You do not buy a PS3 with it's awesome Blu-ray/media center capabilities and waste it on an SD set. You already have a 360 which would hold you over until you get a PS3. And whatever you do if you get the TV do not waste your money on expensive HDMI cables. the 5 dollar variety will do just fine.

All of this. Also don't cheap out on the brand of the TV, it really does make a difference. I recommend Samsung, Sony, Sharp, Toshiba in that order, for the most part. Don't spend all your dough on a TV and nothing for sound, Invest a good chunk into the sound too. Do it right.

I'd rather buy them seperately, as you can get 32" TVs for even lower prices than buying a PS3 alone or one of those combos, since they tend to be bigger than what you need. I remember Target having 32" TVs for $250 last year. They might not have been brand name, but I'm sure it was much better for the price than spending the average $400 for the same quality.
