I think the use of "X", has been well played out in merchandise. I hope they change the name next time around.
PlayStation just sounds like a boring descriptive term.

Um no Xbox is the brand not Microsoft, it would be stupid to change it. With Sony its Playstation and with Nintendo its.. Nintendo. None of those will ever change.

Change the X and loose 7 years of building a brand? No. They've establish this idea by using "Xbox" for the second go 'round. Nintendo can get away with this because they only used that same naming scheme for 2 straight era in the early days.
They all sound stupid to me; Xbox, Playstation and Wii, reminds me of cheap anime. I would rather them use a alphanumeric name citing a series. Same way we have the 8600GTS and 8800GTS etc etc. Though, I have grown used to them.

Actually those gens established "Nintendo" as the brand so Nintendo can chose whatever name they like for the actual system. MS's and Sony's brands are Xbox and Playstation.
Its isn't called a Wii. Its called a Nintendo Wii. We just abbreviate.
Blue-Sky
And its called a Sony Playstation and a Microsoft Xbox 360. What is your point?
both sound fine, but playstation is better, becuase from hearing it you can tell it has something to do with gaming.
x-box could mean anything.
Doesn't Xbox mean something different in Japan....I don't know I think I read it somewhere.
Anyways, the name xbox , before it was use as a system, sounds like a crate with an 'X' on it and the contents inside are unknown. Sorta like Pandora's box.
Playstation, before it was used as a system name, sounds like a disignated area at a daycare or kindergarden where play or make believe. You know where playstaion A is paints, and playstaion B is building blocks. Also its like the opposite of Workstation.

Be honest here. I think both sound equally badass. Xbox maybe a little bit more because of the 'X', but I love saying PlayStation. It sounds like it was made for video games. What are your thoughts?insomniac_dog
I think Playstation has more of a ring to it. Maybe because it sounds like a gaming device without being too obvious about it. The only problem is with the PS2 and now PS3, how many new gamers actually even KNOW what that PS stands for? It is now just PS. And I get the feeling that there won't be a PS4 (in terms of name). I think Sony will ditch the PS after 3 and come up with a new name for their fourth console.
Xbox is a pretty decent name as well but originally was only supposed to be a placeholder name until MS came up with a real one. Kind of like how Nintendo originally referred to the N64 as Dolphin and the Wii as the REvolution. HOwever, the Xbox name spread so quickly and people identified with it so strongly that MS kept the name. Smart move on their part, but to me, although it is a very good name, it still has that slightly vague placeholder feel to it.

Of course people still know what the PS stands for in PS3. Playstation 2 is all anybody heard last gen, and if you go to Wal-Mart and look at the "PS3" section you will clearly see Playstation 3 written on everything, lol.
I hope Sony doesnt change the Playstation name next gen. It's such a strong suit for Sony I think it would be market suicide to change it. People wouldnt associate it with the PS1, PS2, PSP, PS3 anymore, and think of it as a brand new unrelated product. That's my opinion.
According to Dean Takahashi's book, Opening the Xbox, the Xbox was originally to be named "DirectX-box", to show the extensive use of DirectX within the console's technology. "Xbox" was the final name decided by marketing, but the console still retains some hints towards DirectX, most notably the "X"-shaped logo, which DirectX is famous for, along with the "X" shape on the top of the system.
Box is just thrown in there like Station, Cube or Cast.
I think they should stick with Xbox the West, but change the name in Japan for the next generation.
hmmmm...
xbox...?
but im i saying this because i dont like playstation?
ugh.
ummmm...
actually playstation sounds cooler.
Back when i was 11 years old, friends in school used to say, "seen the new playstaion? i'm gonna get it!"
I had this sort of image in my head when i first heard them say it and had a big WTF!! moment, till i saw it in a magazine one day.
The name Playstation kinda grew on me and i liked it, but as some have said its the "X" in Xbox that makes the Xbox sound more badass.
