Well guys I am looking to get into gaming.  When I was younger I played PS2 and N64.  I have played PS3 and I liked it a lot but I have never played Xbox 360.  I am looking to buy a system that would fit my needs/wants.  I want to get something that will last but I dont want to spend a fortune.  I know everyone has a different opinion about which one is best but I am curious as to what people think would be the best for me.  Here are the things I am interested in.

- Graphics

- Games

- Online Play

- System Reliability

- System Longevity (How long before the console will be obsolete/Next version comes out)

- I will be playing mainly sports games (Madden, NCAA, etc)  and first person shooters (Rainbow Six Vegas, COD, etc)

thanks for the help guys

What games have you played/do you own on PS2? I can bet you that there are tons of games you haven't played yet that you would find very enjoyable and you wouldn't have to invest in new hardware. Heck, I'm playing my PS2 more now that I was a couple years ago.

- Graphics- Tied between 360 and PS3 but of course some will look better than others on both.

- Games- 360 has more of a selection and they range in titles.

- Online Play- 360 for online but there is a fee and PS3 is getting better with HOME and the like.

- System Reliability- *cough*

- System Longevity (How long before the console will be obsolete/Next version comes out)- This one is sort of tough seeing as this gen will probably last a while.

- I will be playing mainly sports games (Madden, NCAA, etc)  and first person shooters (Rainbow Six Vegas, COD, etc)- 360 wins this category

thanks for the help guys

ps3 espcially for system reliablity and longitivity reasons: xbox360 has rrod (warrenty should cover for the rest of its lifespan but its still a pain) ps3 has (objectivly) better online due to dedicated servers, higher player caps, etc. you should be fine with the ps3 controller since you are already used to the ps2 one many great fps's on the ps3. if you bought an xbox with all of the extras (including live) that come with the ps3 then it would cost more. $199 xbox arcade + $120 hdd (120 gig) + 80$ wireless adapter + $50 live = about $450 + tax ps3 (80 gig) = $399 plus tax (comes with all of the above)

Using your criteria TC, I'd say a PS3 would be a good fit for you...

Online -360 wins

Graphics - Exclusives PS3 - Multiplat - 360 but sometimes PS3

Reliability - PS3 but the hdmi port does break easily be aware (don't flame this is my expirence with the console)

Games - Depends on you we can't chose.

Sport titles - Both are the same.

FPS - 360

System longitivity - PS3 because it's newer and uses blu ray.

The question you should ask yourself, what kind of games do you want to play? Every system has all types of games, but each system goes a little further in one genre than the other, but they are quickly becoming equals in terms of types of games to buy.

- Graphics -Both PS3 and X360 both have great graphics. I personally think there is more opportunity for PS3 to improve since it has better technology and as developers learn the system.

- Games - 360 has the best selection of 2006, PS3 has the best selection of 2008 and upcoming titles. Also PS3 has more true exclusives and game franchises. A lot of the good X360 games usually end up on PC

- Online Play - X360 has a few minor tweaks that make it better, but you have to pay $50 a year. PS3 actual supports bigger games, has more features like remote play, internet browser, etc and is free. So I prefer PS3.

- System Reliability - Definetly PS3, X360 reliability doesnt exist

- System Longevity (How long before the console will be obsolete/Next version comes out) - Sony has a good history of supporting their systems, MS not so much

- I will be playing mainly sports games (Madden, NCAA, etc)  and first person shooters (Rainbow Six Vegas, COD, etc) - Best sports games are on PS3. MLB08 The Show and Hot Shots Golf being exclusive. I think Sony has their own Basketball franchise as well, but I don't know much about it since I'm not into it. FPS games both systems do well with, but again the free online with PS3 is a big plus. Also the games that have dedicated servers are terrific like Warhawk and Resistance2.

thanks for the help guys

My answers are above, I like PS3 better. Hope some of it helps.

Games are a matter of taste and I say you will enjoy both the 360 or PS3 games

Reliability easily goes to PS3 since the 360 has many RROD problems

Online : even though I own a 360, I have never played on Xbox live gold. To play online you have to pay and to play online on PS3 its free

So it is a matter of choice since both are equally as good graphically. Choose the games you want to play the most and get that system but dont become a fanboy :)

- Graphics - Both are very good (HD). Some games look better on one or the other, but mostly no difference.

- Games - Both have a very good library of games. Look at the exlcusives of both console and see which interests you more.

- Online Play - Depends if you are a big online player. Live has a bigger community but you pay for it. PSN is free, but I think it's just as good (plus you have PS Store).

- System Reliability - Um... PS3 wins this by a landslide! People (360 fans) say that 360s reliability is getting better, but not from what I've heard/experienced.

- System Longevity (How long before the console will be obsolete/Next version comes out) - Well the 360 came out first so PS3 will be around alot longer.

- I will be playing mainly sports games (Madden, NCAA, etc) and first person shooters (Rainbow Six Vegas, COD, etc) - Sports games will be mostly on both, same with FPSs. Again, look at the exclusives. PS3 has Resistance, 360 has GOW.

In the end, just do your research and see which suits you.

PS3. Its a tremendous value as far as what comes with the console free PSN, web browser, bluray, and its reliable. I personally like the 360 better...but If I was to choose one for YOU...I would say PS3.

- Graphics: Pretty close between the 360 and PS3, with cross platform games usually looking better on the 360. Many PS3-exclusives look very nice.

- Games: Probably the 360. Its game library is broader and has quite a few great games.

- Online Play: Live is a bit better than PSN, but it also costs money. PSN gets the job done just fine, and with more features being added constantly, it's an excellent value for... well, the cost of nothing.

- System Reliability: PS3, by far.

- System Longevity (How long before the console will be obsolete/Next version comes out): Probably the PS3, again.

- I will be playing mainly sports games (Madden, NCAA, etc)  and first person shooters (Rainbow Six Vegas, COD, etc)

thanks for the help guys

guys thanks again for all the advice. I am still kinda torn..:?. I just keep hearing how all the major game companies are moving development of games over to the 360, PS3 is losing lacks good exclusive games, etc. The way I look at it I could do one of 2 things here..

Xbox 360 Pro 60gb 299

Wireless Adapter $75

Live Membership $50/year

PS3 80gb $400, built in wireless and free online gaming

I wish I could just make up my mind..:(

What you are reading is a lot of 3rd party developers are also putting their games on X360. That's mainly because of the cost to make games this gen and them trying to maximize sales between two platforms. But there are still a lot of games that are PS3 exclusive. What you really want to look at is first party exclusives or the in house exclusives because they are usually the best games on any system and that is where Sony has a big advantage. I'm not even sure what MS is doing because they have almost no in house development anymore.

Graphics - PS3 in the long run Games - Only you know Online Play - 360 is easily the best, but you have to pay Reliability - PS3 is more reliable Longevity - Right now, no way of telling - Both systems are good for sports and shooters.

The xbox 360 seem to be the best choice when it comes down to the gaming library and the online service, but the other things you are interested doesn't go well with the xbox 360. This is where the PS3 comes in with their reliability and going by track records it looks like PS3 will get support once this generation is over. You just have to choose which is more important.
