While basically the same device internally with a few slight tweaks, both went a completely different route in audience, market, direction, consumer, and developer wise. These two systems basically represent to different paths in how different each approach was to the market at release.

But overall which one of these systems did you think was better?

Gamecube, with Melee, Sunshine, Windwaker, Geist, RE zero, Baiton Kaitos?

Wii with Galaxy, Brawl, Xenoblade, Madworld, Conduit, Wii sports?

Yeah, this won't be obvious and one sided at all (and it's not the higher seller).

Wii. Considering it basically replaced my GC with BC, it has to win there. If the BC argument is out of the question, outside of Melee, there's nothing compelling for me on that system that's even half as good as Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. I am admittedly behind on the GameCube library as a whole but considering its first party titles sucked outside of Melee for me (didn't play Thousand Year Door), it gets the L.

Sometimes I think of the Wii as a continuation of the gamecube, because you can play all its games, have much easier access to 480p for GC games, and quite a few wii games support the gamecube controller.

That said if we're just comparing Wii to gamecube, Gamecube is better no contest.

When I stop and think about the GameCube, I remember it so incredibly fondly. It's where I first played RE4, Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, and spent countless hours in Melee. Plus, one of my favorite games of all time, Twilight Princess, was on the system and I waited for the GC release just to play it.

Meanwhile, the Wii isn't remembered as fondly for me. Lots of crap on it, motion controls sometimes getting in the way, and many of the games weren't what I wanted. But Wii Sports, Skyward Sword, and Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 stand out as amazing titles that were only a part of why I i did enjoy it, and thinking back on those games the poor memories of the Wii are made brighter.

I like both. I'd choose the Wii because of its backwards compatibility and the eShop / VC. Without that, the GC had more gems in my opinion.

Wii is, in my opinion, a better system because you can play, in practical terms, besides the Wii library almost every single game from the Nintendo console library including GBA games, the only thing that sucks in the Wii are those motion controllers, looked awesome at first, helped to sell the system, but in the longer run they are not that good.

Gamecube no contest. Better and more first party fames. Better and more third party exclusives. More 3rd party multiplat. The console was in the forefront on tech and in direct competition with MS/Sony. Sure mario galaxy was amazING but that can't save a whole console generation. Even Miyamoto admitted casuals are trash and don't buy games. Wii was for everyone plus grandma and 75% of the library was casual trash done better on the DS handheld. I was extremely disappointed when it first launched with a 250$ ripoff and I'm still upset now.

The Wii. It had a bigger library of exclusive quality games, and some of the Gamecube's most notable games got ported to the Wii (Metroid Prime Trilogy, Resident Evil Wii Edition, the Pikmin games via New Play Control!, Twilight Princess etc.). The Gamecube had better entries in Smash Bros. and Mario Kart, no doubt. But in the end they're all inferior compared to Smash Bros./Mario Kart on WiiU.

There's really no comparison to be made. Leaving ports (though i shouldn't, but **** it) and obsolete games aside, the Wii still has a strong ass library of quality games.

  • Super Mario Galaxy 1&2
  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns
  • Punch-Out!!
  • Sin & Punishment: Star Successor
  • Kirby's Epic Yarn
  • Kirby's Return to Dream Land
  • Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
  • Trauma Team
  • Rhythm Heaven Fever
  • Zack and Wiki - Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
  • Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  • No More Heroes 1&2
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
  • Sonic Colors
  • Little King's Story

And i have yet to even play games like the Klonoa remake, Fragile Dreams, Skyward Sword and Another Code R, which i've heard great things about.

If you compare purely exclusive games versus exclusive games, the Wii comes out on top both quality and quantity wise. If we go full out counting multiplats and various old ports, Virtual Console, Wiiware, etc., then the Wii straight up shits all over the Gamecube.

GameCube. Wii is based on it. This shows that Nintendo didn't do anything radical with it because GCN itself was fine. Not only that it featured one of the biggest leaps in graphics for Nintendo. While the 2D to 3D jump with N64 was big, GCN damn near perfected it even when it was 480p. DD, Melee, TP, Twin Snakes, etc. etc. All of them were graphically incredible. So much that Capcom is even using the GCN versions for their latest remasters.

Wii has an a more interesting library IMO; more quirky titles. And I'd give Super Mario Galaxy 2 the edge over Metroid Prime.

Plus there are titles like the excellent Sin and Punishment and the great Goldeneye 007 that not many people mention when talking about the Wii.

Well, i don't agree, but i respect your choice and opinion so it's no biggie.

I can play them all on my Wii anyway, lol, so i wouldn't mind some essential gems worth playing today for the Gamecube, that might have slipped my mind. I'm acquainted with its library, but i'm sure there are hidden gems that i'm not aware of.

@Lucianu: Have you seen or played :

  • elebits
  • Muramasa the demon blade
  • dead space extraction
  • Deadly creatures
  • Wario land shake it
  • Mushroom men : the spore wars
  • Boom blox bash party

? I can also recommend the Wii version of sonic unleashed, the day time stages are the best in the series and it's a different game than the 360 version. Werehog's still shit though :/

Here are most of Gamecube exclusives if you want to give them a look later:

Resident Evil Remake, Resident Evil Zero, Wave Race Blue Storm, Eternal Darkness, Star Wars rogue Squadron 2, Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3, StarFox Adventure, Starfox Assault, Pikmin, Pikim 2, Zelda Wind Waker, Zelda Four Swords, Mario Kart Double Dash, F-Zero GX, Luigi's Mansion, Kirby Air-Ride, Donkey Kong Jungle, Smash Bros Melee, Mario Sunshine, Mario Strikers, Mario Golf, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Power Tennis, Battalionwars, Costume Robo, Chibi Robo, Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, Pokemon Colosseum, Pokemon Gale Of Darkness, Wario World, MGS Twin Snakes, Tales Of Symphonia, Fire Emblem Path Of Radiance, Baten Kaitos, Baten Kaitos 2, Soul Calibur 2 (Link edition), Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Geist, Lost Kingdoms, Lost Kingdoms 2, Metroid Prime, Metriod Prime 2, 1080 Avalanche, Phantasy Online 3: Card, Zatch Bell, Naruto Revolution Series, Odama.

I'm missing third party multiplats, multiplats that came to the cube first (RE4, Beautiful Joe) , and also exclusive re-releases from other platforms(Skies Of Arcadia, Phantasy Star Online 1+2, Sonic Adventure 1+2).

Game Cube with Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Super smash and good controller

or

Wii with Mario, zelda, same Metroid games as GC, Super smash and gimmick controller

I go with Game Cube

Every franchise had a better entry on the GC besides Mario 3D platformer. It's also a lot more fun to play Mario Strikers, Baseball, Tennis, Kart, and Party without the motion controls.

Gamecube also had all the RE games.... soooo.... yeah

Gamecube, by a long shot. It had half decent third party support, at least when compare to the Wii and the Wii U, and from an original launch standpoint, the console's games excelled beyond expectation. It's the last console I truly respected from Nintendo.

Melee is not inferior to Smash Bros. Wii U in any fucking capacity other than you can play the new one online (with a butthole netcode). The actual fighting engine in Melee blows the new one out of the water. Nor does the WiiU's versions invalidate the stuff the Gamecube had SIGNIFICANTLY better than the wii counterparts. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii were out right bad entries in their respective franchises.

No, the only thing i see are fans clinging to Melee in a similar fashion CS fans cling to CS 1.6, not because it's better but because they've digested every single nook and cranny, every glitch of the game over the years to the point where they feel way to fucking comfortable to move on. Project M is better, and so is the new one.

As for its fighting engine, man.. There's an ocean of pure fighting games out there with vastly better mechanics. You know, fighting games that were actually created to be competitive? Not like Melee.

**** if i will ever understand its popularity, but it is better than Brawl.

console wise the gamecube was clearly better for its time.

it is, imho, the perfect console. no nonsense or fluff. just dedicated to gaming. the controller may have looked odd but in actual play it made perfect sense (just wish it had a 4th shoulder button and clickable sticks). the internals were the pefect combination of price and performance.

games wise though...argh i cant decide. both had a great selection of games. the wii clearly had more crapware but the diammonds in the rough were still very bright.

Gamecube was (comparitively) more powerful, with better graphics, a better controller (no gimmicky motion shit), better exclusives (Galaxy games aside, nothing on Wii is close to Prime 1 and 2, Windwaker, Eternal Darkness, F Zero GX, etc), GC had more and better multiplats too, with Burnout, Prince Of Persia Trilogy, Timesplitters, Medal Of Honour, Splinter Cell, etc.

The only way Wii would win is if you count heaps of "meh to average" exclusives as worth more than GOTY ones, pretended multiplats don't exist (which System Wars does a lot), and pretended that the Wii's cancerous filth online was worthwhile. Basically, lie and be delusional.

I don't give a **** what excuse or shit you want to fish for, Melee's fighting engine is better. I don't care if it's not Street Fighter, and I don't care if they dumb lucked into it. Apparently Super Metroid's sequence breaking is a lot of glitches, and you know what; it's fucking awesome.

Melee's game speed plays at a faster clip, most of the character still drop faster than WiiU's counterparts (way better than Brawl, but whatever) they don't abuse the counter move and give it every mother fucking body in Melee the way they do in Smash 4, the addition of all those dashes and cancels gave that fighting engine layers, and depth beyond the basics. The shit that you would usually praise other fighting games for, shit other games for, for having well balanced mechanics for mastering, all of a sudden don't apply as an advantage for Melee why? Because the fanbase is a bit annoying? That's stupid.

What has Smash 4 actually added gameplay wise at this point? It's added better features, omega stages, more characters to the roster, but the fighting engine even as you said can't compete with Project M, much less Melee. Them dumb lucking into it just makes the best aspects of Melee all the much more appreciated as far as I'm concerned. Smash 4 is a good game, very good even, way more worthy of my time than Brawl, but it's not a better game than Melee. And I have no investment in the competitive side, I genuinely like the fighting engine more. Wild concept picking the one with better gameplay.

And 1.6 is fantastic.

I'd rather have a Wii in the Gamecube's era than a Gamecube in the Wii's era.

People love the gamecube i still see ppl playing it

Barely anyone was playing much Wii.

I remember people playing Mario party and stuff on the gcube and party games that thing was friggin huge with everyone hardcore and casual people.

I can't believe I'm saying this but yes, I'm one of those who still enjoys playing my Gamecube because Super Smash Bros. Melee, Star Wars: Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2, and Bloody Roar: Primal Fury. The Gamecube was a hell lot better then Wii. [Hell it even beats my Wii U cause Melee was a better game]

Yeah, this won't be obvious and one sided at all (and it's not the higher seller).

How much water do you need to drink to keep that constant stream of bitch tears flowing?

I was only expecting what I thought was as obvious as Shermy playing a shepard in a Christmas play (Peanuts reference).

GameCube. It is my favorite console due to the games for it and the controller. I have tiny womanly hands for a man so the controller was perfect for my tiny mitts.

GameCube had a better library than the Wii, but the Wii had both its own library (which had some pretty solid games still) and the GameCube's library. So Wii wins.

I have very good memories of Gamecube... it being the first & still my favourite Ninty console I've owned.

But if you take into account Wii backwards compatibility with GC, you'd have to take the Wii.
