I sure dont, heres why.

The Wii was bought mostly by soccer moms and grandmas for their kids who never even played the console. There was a study done that showed how the wii was the least played console out of all three, something like on average a wii owner played his console 1 hour a week, compared to 7-10 hours for ps3 and 360. It was a shovelware console, people thought wii fit would make them lose weight so they bought it and never touched it. Big deal they sold 100mill, nobody ever played it, 1 hour a week? Please.

Still sold the most. It won, most definitely, in sales.

@charizard1605: they sold the most console to casuals and non gamers, it was a party toy/fitness machine/fisher price, not a true console.

Also, the Wii had a higher attach rate than the PS3 or Xbox 360. It sold nearly a billion units of software for 100 million units of hardware sold. If people really weren't playing anything on their Wiis, why were they buying 10 games for them each?

Good thing your opinion doesn't matter. Wii won like it or not and it doesn't matter who bought the console.

I don't consider it a "winner" because I have one and hardly played the damned thing. It's the only console I've ever owned that I did not enjoy. Hell, my mom and my parents-in-law also own(ed) one and they're in their retirement ages.

Sales win gens and Wii won last gen with sales. Did it have the best games? Hell no. It had some sure fire gems though. For multiplats I loved the 360 and for exclusives PS3 brought it on home.

@charizard1605: speaking of bullshit revisionism, the Wii had a 8.97 attach rate

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/sales/hard_soft/index.html

While the PS3 had a 9.62 attach rate

http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=641143

Not to mention the Wii had Wii Sports packed in (in the US and many countries, though not Japan) to inflate that number. Check your facts.

@Blabadon: 'Bullshit revisionism.' Or you know, an honest mistake brought on by misremembering, nothing like what the OP is like.

You've given me hardware and software numbers from 2011 (at the very least in the OP), which are meaningless. Give me updated numbers, or this is pointless.

That said, I do stand corrected on the Wii attach rate, it used to be 9.8, but apparently it is down to 9 now (900 million units of software for 100 million units of hardware).

I work with 2 guys who are over 60. One of which doesn't know how to turn his PS4 off and the other doesn't know how to turn it on.

The PS2 originally sold like hot cakes in Japan and many people bought them because it played DVD's not for games.

Case in point lots of casuals buy consoles.

@charizard1605: sure, even if you use those numbers from August 2013, you can take previous PS3 number (63.9 HW, 595.0 SW, millions of course), add on the number of PS3 units sold that's given later (and subsequently subtract the then discontinued PS2), do the math, and get an attach rate above nine, higher than the Wii's.

In the only quantifiable terms of system sold and money it brought in for Nintendo, sure it won. But in term of less quantifiable of contribution to gaming, I think OP has a point. When you operate in an enclosed environment as Nintendo had in the current and last generation, you contribute very little to the greater industry. And to OP's point of the core Wii audience, the low initial Wii U sales seems to support the hypothesis that they are casual gamers. Had majority of the Wii owners been either dedicated or converted gamers, then we should have seen better Wii U reception; for example, PS3 release spiked due to popularity of PS2.

Of course Wii won, it dominated so much that PS3 and Xbox 360 had to copy it. The Wii made gaming accessible to everyone. No matter your age, you could easily enjoy the Wii.

It won in consoles sales but you know what WHO FRAKING CARES, I don't own stock in Nintendo nether do you, they aren't paying my bills. In terms of games, they sucked pretty royally outside of maybe half a dozen games.

Not true, which is pathetic considering it's install base disparity. The 360 I think has the highest attach rate of all time if not behind the PS2.

This is another case of "my console didn't win, so I'm going to move the goalpost until it does" with harry here. Sales are what defines the generational winners. It always has and always will because that's the only quatifiable measuring stick we can use. Fanboys are always trying to move the goalpost. Can't just accept it for what it is,

LOL why so mad? Can't handle the truth?

Did you survey those 100M+ owners? We had 1 and not once did we use it as an exercise machine. Don't talk out of your ass amigo, especially when trying to speak for the entire Wii owning population.

Yep it sure as hell met all the criteria for a console

1. Fixed hardware enclosed in a case

2. Games specifically made for fixed hardware

3. Controllers specifically made for hardware and software

4. Video out for TV or monitor connections

Guess there is a new definition we don't know about?

@harrygooch: The Wii won last generation ... but

1) It is the first console in gaming history that sold 100M++ units and died faster than anyone else

2) It is the first console in gaming history that despite winning its generation in sales its being the worse of its kind on 3rd party support which is ridiculous.

3) It is the first console in gaming history that despite its amazing sales while winning by far ... letting its fanbase with subpar games , aka life support , way earlier than competition

4) It was the first console in gaming history that had one of the lowest end hardware ever existed for its era with in pricey price

5) Gimmick controls didnt last which led consoles like Wii U and X1 , which fall into motion controls gimmicky bubble , into nasty situations since casuals didnt give a crap anymore.

I can go on and go on but you get the grip .. so yeah , Wii won last generation though it "won" in other areas it shouldnt considering it was a clear , super profitable winner.

In N64 era the excuse of sheep when Nintendo dumped it faster than PSX was that N64 has some of the best games ever ... With GC it was that GC didnt sell too well ... With Wii Nintendo exposed and sheep run out of excuses ....

And the story continues with wii U and we go back to "it didnt sale well" excuse. Lets see with NX

I agree that the console that sold the most hardware units and made a ridiculous profit per console sold, expanded gaming's audience is certainly not a winner. I mean what business or industry judges its success by how much money they draw? That would be so fucking silly.

Personally, I always thought the fight was between Sony and Microsoft the Wii just seemed like its own fight nobody was involved in. It's hard to deny the success of the Wii nonetheless.

The Wii had the best games, the best sales, the most innovative controller, and the best community of last gen.

Wii wins.

Wii is the greatest gaming platform in the history of video games.

Your personal enjoyment is not even remotely relevant.

The console with the most sales objectively wins the generation, thus the Wii won regardless of anyone's personal feelings toward the console.

Well, I suppose on what metric we determine winning and losing, but I tend towards the OP's point here. Not only do I think Wii lost last gen, I think it was one of the worst things to have happened to Nintendo. Sales, for what? A 90% drop off come its successor? In what type of sense could that in any way be seen as a success? A system's success is also viewed in its successor. In my eyes, success is long-term, not just deemed on an explosion that is temporary.

Well, he's wrong that the Wii didn't win the gen (it did), but I don't think you can just dismiss the Wii-U situation. I think the way the Wii pretty much died on the vine after 2009 or so and lost all momentum, played a role in the disinterest in the Wii-U. Nintendo rested on their laurels even worse than Sony after the PS2 - but unlike Sony it seems like they have been exceedingly slow to do anything about it (as far as satisfying the core gaming audience). Of course that hasn't stopped them from seeking more gimmickly profit opportunities like Amiibos.

I don't think so. Just look at the X1 and how it's lost it's momentum from the huge success the 360 was. Each console gen is it's own thing and the WiiU didn't appeal to the masses for whatever reason. Some of it could be because of the Wii but I doubt it's the majority. Harry is blaming the lack of WiiUs success all on the Wii and I don't agree.

The Wii certainly won in sales.

in terms of how good the console was compared to ohers, that obviously gets into more subjective territory than sales. Despite popular opinion on the Wii, I actually managed to get a good amount of play time out of the system, probably close to the amount I played with the 360 TBH.

Sales are the only thing we can really measure. Game quality is subjective, and game sales don't reflect a games quality. By that standard, the Wii crushed it last gen. It doesn't matter if a little old lady from Minnesota bought it and never turned it on, the hardware was still sold.
