Poll Who had the bigger comeback, PS3 or 3DS? (65 votes)

PS3 57%
3DS 43%

The PS3 started with the biggest loss of market share in history, but managed to tie the 360 in world sales at the end. Not to forget the really bad design choices and pretty lacking PSN at the beginning.

The 3DS had a very slow launch that forced a $80 price drop only months after release. Many complained about the lack of games and wondered whether Nintendo still had game (pun intended). Now it's the top selling console of 2013.

Nintendo was quicker to react. Good thing too because handhelds are their bread and butter

3DS, easily. PS3 was garbage for most of the gen and there are only 2 exclusives that were really good.

PS3 is more relevant because it's one of the main 3 boxes. Plus they dropped so many features from the original phat one and still managed to catch up while over time producing some ground breaking exclusives with the nicest looking graphics of last gen.

Its yet to be seen how well the 3DS will do against its predecessor. its doing well though and making money. overall a good recovery from nintendo.

Sony also did a good job limiting the damage from the PS3 so in that sense it was a great comeback. but the console was an unmitigated disaster. the only thing it did successfully was get blu-ray established....but then not many cared since streaming content has taken a big lump out of that market. sony did the right thing in building up a first and second party, keeping good relations with 3rd parties and they have learnt well from the mistakes from the PS3, the PS4 hardware is excellent.

but the PS3 can not be considered a success in its own right. i dont think sony ever made a profit on the PS3 overall.

All said and done, the 3DS comeback was faster, quicker, more nimble, and it was quickly turned around to be profitable, something Sony could never manage with the PS3.

I can't give the PS3 too much credit considering the 360 was NEVER accepted in Japan. Had the 360 sold 2-4 million in Japan (on the very low end), I would consider the comeback to be incredible.

3DS never really had any competition.. Sony priced the Vita out of the average consumers households.

3DS made a come back? I mean since it didnt have competition, even tho it was struggeling at first everyone knew and expected it to take off like a rocket easily when games like Pokemon and those JRPGs came. The 3DS was never in any real trouble. Sure it was over priced at first, but it would of sold fine when those games would start to hit the shelves.

On the Other hand, the PS3 was fucking DOOMED and and Sony was fucked. It was a miracle that they made out so welll like they did. I mean no one gave it a shot.

I don't know. Argument could be made for either. Ps3 was a bad release by a very cocky Sony. They had to get deflated a little to now be somewhat in touch with the market with ps4. 3ds did have that $80price drop, but ps3 had the quickest price drop I remember in home consoles only 7 months after release. 3ds didn't really lose Nintendo any ground in the market though. PS3 lost massive market share to Ninty and MS.

PS3. They did it in a bigger market against stiffer competition.

Who did the 3DS clown? the Vita?

The PlayStation 3 had a lot more going against it. And even in the 3DSs' first year, there were still a good amount of worthwhile games (just not as many as it got later on). Whereas with the PlayStation 3, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was mediocre, Heavenly Sword was mediocre, Resistance: Fall of Man was mediocre, and Lair sucked.

@mems_1224: over 80 million sold and managing to outsell the 360 with 1 year less on the market means it's not garbage. Try again.

PS3. Personally, it went from me completely laughing at it in the face to it being my standout favorite console of the generation.

3DS was never in a really dire position. First 6 months were a little rough but by mid 2011 they wrecked the Vita's chances before it even released.

Whereas PS3 went through hell; rightly so for being an awful pile of poo. If you told people 5 years ago that the Wii brand would soon collapse and die and that PS3 would outsell Wii60 combined in the latter years of the generation, you would be looked upon somewhat queerly.

At its worst the PS3 was mediocre for 2 years. Most of the gen? In terms of exclusives, it started to curb stomp the 360 at around 2008/2009.

You're such an unbelievably shit poster.

Anyways, i'd say the PS3 had the more difficult comeback since it was up against two other home consoles at a much higher price. It was also released a year later than the 360. The 3DS' recovery was swift. I don't think the Vita was even released when the 3DS got its shit together. The only thing the 3DS was competing against was the DS' legacy.

And are we comparing the 3DS sales figures to say....the sales figures of phones and/or tablets? No we are not. So it's essentially being compared to only the PSVita. Quite an easy win if you ask me. If you remove the PSVita from the equation, the 3DS is being compared to nothing. It's quite difficult to appear bad when you have nothing to compare to.

The same cannot be said about the PS3. It had to play catch up with the 360 for the entire last gen. And I personally think that PS3 closing the gap with the 360 is a greater achievement than just bare sales figures of the 3DS being compared to a much less appealing PSVita. That's like comparing Windows 8 to Linux and claiming that Windows 8 did well because it out-capitalized Linux by a ratio of 100 to 1...instead of comparing it to Windows 7.

Both have left me satisfied and smiling, so it doesn't really matter. The 3DS comeback was faster, but the PS3 comeback had stiffer competition. Each had to overcome their share of technical problems and gaming droughts.

It's much harder to compete in portable now then it was 5 years ago. Even Nintendo cited the rise of mobile devices as hurting their sales (although they sold 11 million in NA, it still fell short of their expectations). And Sony too is blaming mobile. They practically designed the Vita right when smartphones/tablets were becoming widely adopted.

PS3 had a bigger comeback. Nintendo's handhelds have always sold well. The comeback by the PS3 was a bigger boost for Sony.

Had MS been as willing to lose money on the system as Sony on the system it wouldn't have been close as there would have been a 149 dollar top end 360 as far back as 2009. Sony had to lose a ton of money to merely tie a competitor who was profitable. There was also the RROD. Had you said that Sony would only be able to tie a machine that had hardware failures for the first two years of its life and have to lose a boatload of money to do so, people would call you insane. The PS3 has a pretty halfbaked "comeback"

PS3 comeback was amazing. It lasted years as lemmings constantly shat on it. It was entertaining to watch as years later the PS3 PWNed the 360 and wii in quality games. Sony is on top of the world now.

3DS had a comeback against who? Sure people laughed at it, but then they did a price drop and it started selling. Was not that entertaining.
