From Software (Demon's Souls, Bloodborne)
Incognito Entertainment (Twisted Metal Black, War of the Monsters, Warhawk) RIP
Naughty Dog back when they made games
Kojima Productions
For first part it's this:
Naughty Dog back when they made games
For third party it's NIS
ND but only because of Way of the Warrior on 3DO. Since then they've become a cheap B rated movie studio. :P
1st party= Sucker Punch, because Infamous series is just pure fun.
3rd party= Team Ninja, because Nioh really is as good as the hype.
Pointless thread. The vast majority of responses will be the following:
1st party: Naughty Dog
3rd party: From Software
Use to be Psygnosis until they became obsessed with just making Formula 1 games. I didn't much care when they shut their doors as SCE Liverpool since the studio pretty much stopped being relevant after the PS1 days, but man during those days, they were king on PS1.
Probably my next favorite use to be Sony's Japan Studios, who made such games as the Patapon series, Siren series, LocoRoco series, Ico & Shadow of the Colossus, and so on. They seemed to had hit their peak in the 7th gen, and kind of declined after that. Probably my next favorite after that in about the same period was Evolution, who made the Motorstorm series, though I only really liked the first two games, then they went downhill after the PSP/PS2 game, then that awful Apocalypse. Then we got DriveClub and that was it for them, sad.
As for a third party partner, hmm, probably Quantic Dream. I loved games like Indigo Prophecy, I loved how every decision could branch the story so many different ways. I liked Heavy Rain a lot too, though the idea of a mystery kind of effected its replay value in a bad way as you already got it all figured out on the first playthrough. There was absolutely no choice-consequence in Beyond: Two Souls, but man, I loved that story, it was really worth playing for that and that alone. I'm really looking forward to Detroit, given David Cage is stressing bringing back how those little choices can have a variety of outcomes to the story; can't wait to see.
They usually miss the mark for me as a whole, but I enjoy the fun yet flawed stylings of Sucker-punch. Bloodborne remains the greatest thing to come from Sony so, of it counts, I'd give it to From Software easily.
I don't believe there has been a Sony 2nd or 1st party game that comes to half the brilliance that From Software has put on Sony consoles.
Evolution. I bloody loved Motorstorm and Driveclub. Shame closed them down then I guess!
Seriously. I'm glad that Codemasters saved a lot of the team, but hope they get to keep making really arcade stuff as opposed to just helping make more Dirts.
Also miss Incognito and Eat Sleep Play.
Santa Monica (before this past E3 anyway) and Insomniac - PS2 Ratchet and Clank are some of my favorite games and Sunset Overdrive is possibly my favorite game of the gen.
I'll always hold a soft spot for Naughty Dog. I may not enjoy there newer style of games as much as there platformers (Though, I agree with most who say TLoU is a masterpiece), but Crash and Jak where such a huge part of my childhood, that I could never dislike them.
Aside from them though, I've never been huge on Sony's 1st party lineup. Sony's line up, more than any other, has always relied more on the offerings of third parties.
