RARE, no contest. Banjo-Kazooie, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark etc.

Naughty Dog.
I've played very little of Rare's work but their work in certain genres don't sniff ND's best work and the rest is 80s games they aren't interesting to me.
Then go back to bed kid. This question is for people old enough to have experienced Rare's greatest games.
Rare. Not close either. I actually think Naughty Dog's best games are Crash and Jak.
I probably enjoyed Rare much more in their prime but admittedly Naughty Dog has been more successful in garnering popularity. And like others have stated, Naughty Dog is still in their prime, whereas Rare is pretty much a has been.

it's never a good sign when a post starts out calling someone "kid"
It's not even close, ND.
It's Rare if you enjoy playing games that require more than a 5-seconds attention span. Enjoy your QTE and games with no replay value.
I'm like a celebrity here on SWs. A reply for every single post. lol

lol at you using SW for an ego boost.
Rare by a considerable margin. Naughty Dog is a fantastic developer, and I would say looking at current them versus current Rare, then they win hands down, but god damn, Rare really ripped the industry to shred in the 90's with some of their top releases. Goldeneye alone would be enough for them to take it to be perfectly honest, but they were just constantly churning out some of the best games the SNES/N64 had to offer.
Rare by far.
Naughty Dog is fantastic and is definitely one of if not the best developer around today, but they cannot compare to how great Rare was from around 1994 to 2001. During that time period Rare was usually releasing at least two or more fantastic games per year whereas Naughty Dog only averages about one fantastic game every two years. Rare also released fantastic games in a wider variety of genres than Naughty Dog has.
Someone should make a thread listing all the most popular game developers in their prime with a poll and have elimination rounds so we can have a semi finals and finals thread afterwards.
Though I'm guessing Nintendo would win. Although Sega in their prime was pretty damn good.
I think Rare in their prime was substantially more impactful and resonated through the years a hell of a lot better than Naughty Dog ever will, with the exception of Crash Bandicoot. Perfect Dark and Goldeneye four player split screen? Banjo Kazooie? Diddy Kong Racing? There's just no comparison.
Uncharted? The Last of Us? Who's going to give a shit about those in 20'ish years and say "wow those games were my childhood, so many good memories", I mean really? I'm not knocking them, they're just not those kinds of games.
Rare easily. They released more games in more genre's, all of them massive hits, and all in a shorter period of time. Anything they touched was gold, yes even Starfox Adventures was really good. They had fps, racing, adventure, fighting, puzzle/action, mulitplayer plus single player brilliance.
It's not even close, ND.

Kind of like Kim Kardashian.
Even though a lot of what RARE made doesn't hold up that well, they still produced far better games than Naughty dog generally does.
Naughty Dog > Rare
Of course this is only my opinion based on my gaming taste and what I've played from both.
About the same, but I'd give Rare the edge. Mainly because I actually had a lot of fun with some of Rares offerings back in the day. I don't hold either dev in high regard though.
Have to go with RARE, awesome Gameplay and great multiplayer, truly groundbreaking stuff they did on consoles.
The Last of Us shits on anything Rare has ever humanly created by a few light years and then some. Also ND has just started to hit their stride with the PS4 hardware, imagine their TLOU2!
Viva Pinanta is better than TLOU according to System Wars rules, lol. Stay salty brah.
lol.. really? Rare.. it isn't even close. Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, RC Pro Am, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and many, many more through the years. A lot of people are showing how young they are in this thread.
Naughty Dog has never made a single revolutionary game. They've been copying other devs for years now. They have yet to perfect their shooting mechanics in their latest games.
The only reason why people praise them to high heavens is because of PS exclusivity and scripted events in their games. Take them away and you are left with mediocre gameplay trying to copy Gears of War for years now. TLOU was a huge improvement in terms of gameplay though.
It's better game than Uncharted. Back then when they used to make platformers, they were still not making anything ground breaking. They gave us some great games but that's it, those are just great games. Rare on other hand has brought a lot of ground breaking games.
Rare had impact, but going back to some of their games is a fucking slog.
In the 2d era they were outclassed by way better side scrollers.
Fighting game wise? You were settling for Killer Instinct, not going to it because the game special, because it wasn't. Arcade version included.
The n64 era? I like Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64 is one of the most tedious collect-a-thons you can play, Banjo 1 and 2 are decent platformers, if not actually good, but they take some of the more not so pleasant things about Mario 64 and make them worse. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were only good because you were a child who didn't play PC FPS games of that time, because if you were playing those games Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are terrible FPS games. Both in terms of controls, balance, shooting mechanics, and how the mp works. It's "fun" in a chaotic and primal sort of way, but pure campaigns you could play better, and mp wise? PC was moving on to online play.
So they look better in an era where a lot of devs were struggling to transition to 3D, and Rare had Nintendo's backing. In contrast Naughty Dog's actual good games, are actually fucking good by any measure. They can be a bit overrated I guess, I'm not fond of Uncharted 1 and 3, I think at least 1 is a legit poor game. I don't care for ANY single Crash Bandicoot game, they all suck sans Crash Team Racing, and **** Jak 2 and 3. So uh, I would currently still pick Rare given their influence, and because I really like Viva Pinata, but this golden Rare had more chinks in the armor than they are given credit for. A lot of their old games don't hold up as strong because they were never actually that good.
Rare. Mostly because they were better than almost anything before or even after. NG included. But its cool, I see youngsters voting NG.
Looking at platformers alone, donkey kong country, banjo kazooie, conkers bad fur day > crash bandicoot, jak and daxter. Then youve got some of the greatest fps games of that generation (especially multiplayer) in goldeneye and perfect dark. Anyone who sais naughty dog clearly never played these games.
Naughty Dog has 2, MAYBE 3 Good/Great games under their belt.
TLOU, CTR,.....J&D 1????? = Good/Great
Crash trilogy = mediocre
Jak trilogy = mediocre
Jak Racing = mediocre
Uncharted trilogy = garbage
The **** out of here with this undeserved Naughty Dog praise.
Naughty Dog are so overrated, their games have feel so contrived wheres the innovation, wheres the creativity..

So they still made quality games when almost everyone else was shit? That's a testament to quality and competence more than anything else.
