It is hard to imagine a time when Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony weren't the only companies making consoles. I believe it is just a matter of time before another company throws its hat in the ring and releases a new console. Many have flirted with the idea that Sega will reenter the console scene, or perhaps development juggernauts like EA or Apple could make a video game console. What do you think? Even if you don't know, who would likely be the next to release a console, or who would you like to see release a console and compete with the three current console manufacturers?

Steam is the most likely imo(although unlikely)! Apple's would just be 1100$ for the equivalent of a wii. I can't see Sega ever re-entering.

A free console? BRILLIANT. Wait, that might work, if it gets enough software sales to cover the cost of the hardware from the cut they take from each game sold...

Just throwing this out here but Google? Apple seems more likely than Google but we will never know until the day it happens. I would prefer Google over Apple but that is just me.

I think there won't be any more high-profile consoles from other companies. Sure, they could try and make a Wii copy (like some Chinese companies already did) but it wouldn't really sell imo. You don't need just some cheap hardware and a gimmick for a console you also need advertising and good support. Back in the early 90s there were many companies who though that just making a strong and/or multimedia capable console would be enough to get the sales but they were wrong. To be honest I don't really mind it as there are more than enough consoles already. Infact if exclusives died out you could go with just one console (or the PC) and be happy.

It would take some pretty strong cultural change within Apple for them to relase a game console. Thier hearts just aren't into gaming.

A true competitor would be Google and would make sense on a couple of fronts. Really though one of the big 3 would have to step down as a 4th console would severely saturate the market with consoles.

I'm saying Valve would make a Steam console(not steam spontaneously producing a console :P)... out of any company, I think they're in the best position(good name recognition with gamers, money, brains), however it's unlikely they'd do something like that, especially since the internet still sucks too bad for DD to be 100% mainstream.

Honestly, OnLive is gonna be bigger than a console in a bunch of years(no time soon), when the internet infrastructure is built up to where latency is in the 10s-60s of ms and no bandwidth caps, and it can render games that a desktop/console couldn't dream of (by using the advantage of being a parallel server). Imo.

Consoles are dead haven't you heard? ;)

Seriously though I can't see any other companies getting into consoles at this point. There is already 3 companies there, and none are going away anytime soon. Sega had their chance and blew it, and Apple already has a console so to speak. Apple TV and they plan on releasing APPS for it. Yeah sure it's not competition for regular consoles but the Apple Zealots will line up to play short attention span games like Angry Birds like it's going out of style.
