@i_p_daily: It's a vote between the two, no space for neutrality here.
But neither is "ultimate" though.
Prefer Odyssey by just a bit, but both are among my tops this year/gen.
Still working though Odyssey though. A little over 800 moons and most of the purple coins.

So are these moons/coins just collectables and if so what do you get for collecting them???

Moons are basically tied to progression, gate keepers for unlocking new worlds up to a certain point.
Purple coins unlock items in world specific shops, but it's all just cosmetic stuff.
Not sure if anything unlocks at the end for having 100%. At this point I'm just getting them because a lot of them are fun goals. Aside from that, I just always 100% Mario games.
BOTW and Switch arrived today.
Didn't actually like it that much compared to OOT, but my bro says it gets a lot better. I hope his convincement pays off, or i have wasted some money.

So basically just filler like most collectables in games.

They're all over the place quality wise.
Some of it is filler. Just a moon laying out in plain sight. Or stomp a shiny surface on the ground.
Some of it's more like mini games that don't use the main games mechanics. Those can go either way. Like the snow races are awesome. RC track can be fun for some, boredom for others. Then you have stuff that is universally meh, like jump roping.
But then of course you have lots of killer stuff based on platforming, environmental "puzzles", cleverly hidden items, stuff like that.
Not really sure how you made the leap to filler outright based on what I said lol. But sure, some of it is.
On the upside, replaying the game is gonna be great. The gate for unlocking most worlds is pretty low, so bypassing any stuff you might not like is entirely possible.
@ConanTheStoner: are you using FAQs for the tricky ones?!
Ha never.
But I do purchase some in game hints from toad, yes. Though they usually just give you a vague hint of where to look. Seems pretty well done so far, being able to figure them out in game. I did almost cave on one in particular though. Was my final moon for completing Lost Kingdom 100%, had me stumped for a while.

You're missing the point. How you collect them is whats important. Its no different than "winning races to unlock more cars" in racing games (ex gave because you like racing games). Same sh*t. They're just a goal to make you play the game through it's mechanics.
Everything can be redundant without proper context
I can't really vote. I loved both of them for different reasons. Likewise, there are elements of those games I dislike, but again they are different.
Way too hard for me to choose. Fortunately I don't have to. :D

Depending on where you are in the game, the moons unlock new worlds and open up new outfits for purchase in the store. Purple coins are a currency to purchase certain outfits and trinkets in the stores.
Those are just the little rewards for doing it. The fun is how you get them. Like Conan mentioned though, not all moons are made equal... Some are really dumb.
So for all those who replied to me it seems that the majority is just filler.
Spot on, that's definitely the takeaway here.
They put filler inside of filler and even wrapped the game in a nice filler.
Link in Mario Kart. Someone post a picture of that. Lol. Imo that looks far more awkward than Mario in New Donk City.

Basically. They should have called it Super Mario Filler.
Filler of the year though.
Going with Zelda BotW regardless that I have yet to play Mario. Simple fact is that I've always preferred Zelda over Mario; it's my favorite Nintendo franchise.
That said, I have a copy of Mario hiding in the closet as a family Christmas gift. Merry Switchmas to us.
I voted Zelda. Mainly because it's the most revolutionary for the series while also being super fucking awesome. Odyssey isn't less awesome, but Zelda wins for me since I find Odyssey kind of like a very improved Super Mario 64. But BotW is like we've never seen Zelda before.
Very tough to choose as I absolutely love both franchises. I haven’t played Odyssey yet however Breath of the Wild is an amazing game and I’ve always slightly been more partial to the Zelda games so I’ll put my vote behind BotW.
Super Mario Odyssey's Ending was WAY more satisfying than Breath of the Wild's.
I love both, but I think Odyssey should take the Cake.

I agree on the ending. Odyssey's ending was absolutely great, while BotW's was like a candle blowing out softly.
I've vote Zelda. Very difficult choice to be honest but Zelda takes it because to me the best open world I've played while I still prefer Galaxy 2 over Odyssey. But Kudos to Nintendo for going all in on 2017.
Zelda is the more ambitious title in my opinion. The physics alone make it such a wonder when you really think through how to use it to your advantage....
I just just just finished Mario maybe 60 seconds ago and it was an awesome trip. New donk city is the level of the year and the end was fantastic. Great platformer... So inviting.
In my heart it's Zelda 1 and mario 2, but either or are games of the year.
@GarGx1: Divinity is definitely fun but I wouldn't definitively say it's my favorite game this year. :)
@GarGx1: I haven't played that one yet. For me, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are among the games that stood out for me this year. It just so happens that each of them contribute a different type of enjoyment that I quite fancy in my games. For Mario it's an accomplished layer of kinetics and depth in platforming and the level design is great at visualizing the player's progress in a way not often seen in 3D platformers.
For Breath of the Wild it's the sense of wanderlust that it employs. It uses space and verticallity in its gameplay loop that makes it like a constant wonderment. Also the combat tools are super fun to mess around with, and it's refreshing to be completely free of invisible hands guiding me along both in what I do and how I do it.
With Divinity OS2, I love the way combat works and how many different branches you can go through; quadrupled when you have a full party of characters that you can customize which ever way you like. Much of the roleplaying is also really fun to engage in, and you can definitely be led down some interesting paths in the dialogue choices you make (sometimes they can be a bit predictable and linear too though).
Neither of these three are perfect for me. There are elements I love and dislike too but man, they are top quality fun if you ask me.
@jumpaction: If you enjoy the Total War games then it really is a must have, especially if you already have Warhammer 1 because then you get Mortal Empires. The siege mechanic is still the same as the first game and definitely the weakest element but everything else is excellent. It needs naval battles as well but I doubt they have the resources or time to do actual fleets for each of the races.
To be perfectly honest there is no real way to compare Zelda, Mario and Divinity outside of Gamespot's 10 score. They are all good games, and just as you say, for different reasons.
@GarGx1: I'm actually more familiar with Warhammer 40k which makes me interested to delve into Total War 2. Should I try 1 first?
Oh man, they are totally different and set out to accomplish different goals, and all of them succeed. Now they each stumble in their own ways too but all three games will engage in their own ways. Sometimes they have similarities but where Divinity succeeds in its depth of roleplaying, Mario is kicking it with his crazy tight movement and mechanics. Then Link is all like "I can go....... everywhere! :O ".
They're all uniquely great, and I'd encourage any gamer to try all three of them. There are also other games that didn't score quite as high this year but I also loved.
I'd have to give it to Odyssey. BotW was great, but Odyssey is amazing.
Overall there was more that bothered me about BotW than Odyssey.
I love Odyssey, but no, it's an insult to Zelda to have it be compared to it. BotW is flabbergastingly ambitious and fantastic, there is nothing else like it.
BotW is the greatest game ever made. Odyssey is the greatest Mario ever made. BotW wins.
