FY11
PS3 sales - 13.9 million
PS2 sales - 4.1 million
FY12
PS3 / PS2 sales combined - 16.5 million
Sony states in the report that PS3, PSVita and PSP sales were down YoY. No mention of PS2 sales.
Not only does this indicate that the PS3 sold less than 13.9 million, but that the PS2 sold around 4.1 million again (They only stopped shipping it in the last quarter).
Therefore, the PS3 shipped around 12.4 million during FY12, giving it the grand total of 76.3 million (as of March 31st 2013). For reference, the 360 was at 77.2 million.
FY13 Q1
PS3 sales - 1.1 million
Sony state that revenues were flat. "PlayStation 3, 2 and PSP sales are all quoted as being down"
PS2 sales were down (obviously, they stopp shipping in Jan 2013). PS2 sales were not combined with PS3 sales.
Therefore .....
PS3 is currently at 77.4 million.
360 is at 78.2 million.

This does not refute the fact, that those were estimates, based on trends. They were not shipment estimates for the period you wanted to use them for (date of the article, and release of the findings), either :?

Why did you bother to ask then if you didn't want to know the truth.
Stop making threads already. The XBox 360 is probably over 79 million by now as those 78.2 numbers were for the end of June I believe. Sony has never confirmed the PS3 selling more then that XBox 360. For the past 2 years they were combining PS2 sales with PS3. So we know PS3 numbers are 100% accurate anyways.
360: 78.4 million Ps3: 79.1 million Source: http://www.vgchartz.com/ These are official worldwide sales numbers. 360 and ps3 sold about the same, the difference is negligibleTheFlush
LOL!! No. VGChartz numbers are way off for one. They are also including the PS2 sales from over the last 2-3 years. XBox 360 was at 78.2 back in June for worldwide sales. They are well over 79 million today.
Sony is not exactly a humble company, so if PS3 ever does pass up Xbox 360, you can bet that Sony will issue a statement to brag about it. They haven't issued a statement about their sales yet because they are still in last place and have to combine PS3 sales with PS2 sales to make their numbers appear higher than they actually are.starwolf474This also, Seriously does anyone at all think if Sony passed Microsoft they would not be screaming it from every rooftop they could find?
So for those who think the 360 is not in third place, please provide proofNationProtector
No. Â That is not how it works. Â The burden of proof is not on those to "prove" 360 ISNT last place. Â It is on those who believe otherwise to prove that it is. Â
As it stands, only one company has reported their numbers. Â The other has not. Â End of story. Â

Yes, im sure you research factual information from sony fiscal year reports, but those reports didnt offer particular information for exact sales of ps3's in some of those fiscal years. And from that information that wasnt provided you just guessed and estimated what was not provided. So using the sony reports to justify your assumptions is a broken reasoning as you used your assumptions for information the reports did not provide. The IDC article stated it came up with those estimated based on information released by both companies at the time (so it may not be 100 percent accurate, it probably is somewhat accurate). And the fact that your assumptions were waaay off from IDC research, somethings is wrong there. Your saying 700,000 units less were sold in 4 months longer than what IDC reported from information published by both game companies. It's obvious your assumptions are some off lol[QUOTE="TheFlush"]360: 78.4 million Ps3: 79.1 million Source: http://www.vgchartz.com/ These are official worldwide sales numbers. 360 and ps3 sold about the same, the difference is negligibleblackace

Because the ps2 has it's own chart over there, why would they include those in the ps3 sales? http://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/Hey, that's not too bad, save one important thing. I just looked at the FY12 report and it never says the unit sales of PS3 were down. It says "Lower sales of PlayStation 3 hardware, due to a strategic price reduction, and of PlayStation 2, due to platform migration, lead to a decrease in sales in the game business." Now, if you interpret sales as unit sales, that makes no sense, and would contradict you that PS2 had no change. However, if you realize the entire thing is talking about the sales in dollars (revenue) in this entire section it makes sense but unfortunately that doesn't say anything as far as the unit sales goes.FY11

They are so damn close and the RROD and year headstart of the 360 make it the loser in my opinion. Â So close though, so who cares? It's Wii in first place (I imagine that's what you left implicit in your title) and 360 in second, as far as sales go (which shouldn't really matter much for us, non-microsoft-action-holders). It has more console sales and nearly fifty million people shelling out a few dollars every month. Financially speaking, I wouldn't be surprised if the Xbox Live Gold factor pushed the revenue from the 360 above that of the Wii, despite the latter's absurd popularity/sales. That the 360 surpassed the PS3, in that matter, is a no-brainer.

We cant tell who wins by sales numbers alone. I think we need to conjugate total sales, worldwide reach and exclusive games.
So Sony wins... even if the sales numbers are very close, Sony is truly worldwide (MS cant really touch Asia), and Sony has more exclusives (with good ratings).
