I know how everybody loves to praise reviews when they go their way and bag them when they don't, no matter who is writing them.....

My question is, given the state of gaming right now who's words do you trust on a consistant basis....? and why?

Has Gamespot lost their clout or should we hold them to a different standard? Is it ok that I find more accurate reviews, even if unfavorable, from Official Xbox Magazine than from say, IGN?

...Who do you trust... and don't say something cliche like, "trust yourself man" everyone reads reviews and everyone has an opinion....

I average Gamespot and IGN and get my opinion on the game 98% of the time.

I read from IGN and GS mainly for most games, save for RPG titles, especially niche ones.

For those I tend to use more RPG centric sites, that seem to have a better understanding of the niche crowd those games apply to and what said crowd likes from those games.

Use IGN when you need a high score and EGM when you need a low score.

XPLAY. They were the only review place that had the guts to expose THE DARKNESS for its garbage gameplay and give it a 2 out of 5.

I thought The Darkness had excellent gameplay. I didn't see any issue with it once I understood it's design.

Honestly? Metacritic and/or Gamerankings, usually just Metacritic though. I like to get a wide variety of opinions. But the sites who's reviews I think are the best written and most insightful are generally IGN and especially Eurogamer.

GameInformer and EGM....sometimes Gamespot. majadamus

GI to me is just not trustworthy. After the Paper Mario (GC) review, and after viewing their lame complaints on games like Boktai I just can't find myself to trust them (albeit I still read them for the heck of it).

I, also, find it odd how the second opinion person is so close nearly identical at all times. Even when games are getting lower scores across the industry, two GI reviewers will somehow both give high impressions (nearly the same).

I agreed /w X Play on that review. Sometimes they do see flaws and pluses a lot of gamers don't see. The horrible aiming and the constant shooting of the lights made the game trash. Sad attempt as an FPS if you ask me.

I read reviews from Gamespot, IGN, 1UP, GameInformer, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and GameBrink.

I wouldn't trust one source any more than any other though. I rarely let a score influence my purchase. I read the actual content and decide whether to buy the game based on what I've seen, read, heard, and experienced.

I also think that The Darkness is crap. But X-play reviews are poor. They talk about each game for about 20 seconds or so. (

The games control on aiming and pacing was intended. If you were some ace with guns what the need for the darkness powers? Most of the complaints I see about the game were done so for a reason, I should know when I first played the game I complained as well.

You don't need to shoot the lights out all the time, there are other means to killing lights (darkness skills like Creeping Dark and Demon Arm, and even a darkling).

In the end I think many/most people who didn't like the game expected Jackie to be some master shooter, who could run faster. The game isn't really focused on Jackie and his shooting ability, it's focused on his powers gained by the darkness.

GS scores are fine. Everybody misses the mark once in a while in a review, that's to be expected.

I remember when IGN gave God Hand a 3.0, a 3.0 for heaven's sake!

So, you're stuck with the less-focused part of the game until you get more powers ?

Which based on my experience it takes some time to get the good ones...

Ultimately what matters to most people is the score.

I seriously doubt people would complain that much about the content of reviews if the score on them would have been favorable to their views.

Essentially yes. Looking back and having started my review for the game (not on a site yet), struggling with lack of ammo and the overall lack of gunplay accomplishing much outside of killing some lights here and there, it made me appreciate the powers the darkness did give me.

There was a point in the game where conventional wepaons became moot, which was neat b/c at first it's all you have.

Yeah, I think a lot of people probably just mostly ignored the Darkness powers and played it like a straight FPS. I basically stopped using guns once I got the demon arm.

I think a lot of people could be upset with Gamespot's reviews because they seemed to have toughened the reviewsup a little. As long as they are consistent in their critique, the score does not matter. If they give a game an 8.5 and that means it is great, so what if it is not a 9. A GS 8.5 means a great game every time for that genre. I have tried to play games inflated by other review sites and became disappointed in the hype that did not seem backed up to me. I would rather the review be too tough. Also, I would rather play a AA game of the style I like than a AAA of a style that I hate. Even though COD2 was 8.8 and GRAW was 9.2, I couldn't stand GRAW and loved COD2. We get obsessed on raw scores when, as Gerstman says, these are basically consumer reviews for us, not be all and end all critiques.
