They get you hyped for absolutley no reason. I don't know if there is an unspoken rule of gaming journalism where you can't give a game a negative impression, but wow they are misleading.

Read the Hellgate preview, they actually make this game sound amazing. Keep an eye out in the next few days -- watch it get a 6.5

I watched Hellgate videos for the past year and they all looked like garbage, than I read a preview and I was like - oh I guess it might be great. Then I play the demo and I'm like wtf.

And it's like this for every game.

You can tell when Gamespot is going to rate a game good. They hype itwith launch centers and tons of features related to the game. R&C was a good example of this. I knew they were going to rate it lower than every other review site because most other review sites had some sort of anticipation for this game.

I know. That game looked and played fantastic to every critic's eyes and it flopped everywhere. I guess previews shouldn't be trusted anymore.

Funny thing is that most of the critics said that the framerate was smooth and the controls took time to get use to but it gets easy. Now it's choppy framerate and terrible controls. Or maybe because Factor 5 focused too much on the graphics and not so much on gameplay after the previews.

That's why you wait for a game to come out with real reviews from people who have actually played the whole game.. See, problem solved.

Dont forget about the lair previews! They made it sound like its awsome and it was the greatest game ever made! Then bam GS give it a 4.5 or 5.0 (cant really remember). Just by the preiews i though Lair would have got a 8.0

Umm...yea it prettu much is an unspoken rule to give positive impressions only.

Because you're not playing the final game, you gloss over what seems bad in hopes that they fix it. I thought this was common knowledge. Theres no point saying "but this this and this suck" when all those things could be theoretically fixed before launch.

If I went through GS's entire catalog of previews over the years, I don't think I'd find a single bad one. It's that bad.

Just look at Lair, for example. Surely someone must have noticed how horrible the controls were in the years prior to the game's release, right? Why was it never mentioned until the review?

What do they know about what's going to get fixed and what isn't? If there's a problem with the game before release, they should tell their readers about it.

I remember seeing a SSBB preview not long ago that had negative commentary about its controls.

I remember a while ago before the N-Gage launched Jeff made a video to say how clumbsy he thought it was.

Well, there's two examples from about four years of reading this site.

Remember the Splinter Cell: Essentials controversy? This was one of the ads for the game:

Gamespy gave the game something like 2 out of 5. That text was taken from a preview.

This is why I don't trust previews anymore.

While I disagree with the HGL review, I do agree on the issue. I remembered reading Game informer previews about Killzone and how it was going to destroy Halo and I was all excited but when it came out...

After that I began using my own judgement to see if it would be a type of game I would enjoy. If there is any question about it, I will wait for reviews and such.

I approve of this thread.

I remember a thread exactly like this labelled as damage control when Lair was reviewed. I don't wonder why people hype games AAA after reading previews. They are always glowingly positive.

You really think developers will let journalist play nothing but the best of their game?

That's what they put out there, nothing but the best.

That's why you need the complete game in your hand to make a fair decision.

Well, most of the time previews are written about early builds, when there's time to fix the crappy. But yeah, sometimes previews are just sugarcoated bull****.

Here's what Gamespot wrote about the new Looney Tunes game at E3.

Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal looks like it's shaping up to be a respectable entry into the 3D action genre. It's technically impressive, has been created with a clear love of the characters, and it looks like there'll be a nice mix of locations on offer.Gamespot

And here's the review.

Even on a technical level, the presentation fails. The muddy textures and simplistic terrain features are at least four years behind the curve compared to other PlayStation 2 games. Except for an increase in sharpness, the Xbox 360 and Wii versions of the game don't look any better.

Don't bother with Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal, not even for kids who you think won't know any better. It isn't fun, it certainly isn't funny, and the game's sketchier aspects are liable to fluster anyone who plays it.
