It seems that they think that Sackboy will be a new one. The funny thing is, the rapid changing of mascots makes them look like Situationists.
Look at all major brands now:
Sony: started with Crash Bandicoot (we can pretty much agree that was the first unofficial mascot of Sony PlayStation) - yet new Crash won't even come out on PS3 now.
Nintendo: Mario all the way.
Microsoft: Master Chief - if he can be called a mascot - all the way.
So, in conclusion Nintendo and Microsoft are all faithful to their mascots, and Sony isn't.

The desperation is not on Sony's part by on the part of Fanboys who for some strange reason NEED a macot for a system. Sony has never had a mascot. I owned a PS1 and never owned a crash game. Not to mention Crash was not the only big exclusive the PS1 had, it had some exclusive Spyro, Tomb raider, Tekken and MGS games.
Sony systems have always been diverse in their games. You can't stereotype Sony games nearly as easily because there isnt really one franchise that eats up a large percentage of the fanbase. Halo 2 and SSB last gen was bought by roughly 30% of the fanbase of the console they were on. They were the highest selling games for their console. Sony's highest selling game was GTA vice city and it was only in 12% of its fanbase's households.
