I hold source above cryengine soley based upon the fact that source made valve games better and cryengine limited crysis. Crysis is the best looking game out still, but at what cost? Even on the most beastly machines the game slows down. The source engine played like a balet when it was released and in my book that is much more important. I'm not saying performance is everything but a game that looks good/Ok and runs fantastically is better IMO. Everything about crysis felt clunky. physics where strange death animations seemed to hiccup in short the game wasnt fluid, at least not as fluid as running CSS at 240fps. THOUGHTS?

WHat is better shooting the most wonderfully modeled enemy in the head and seeing a clunky death animation or shooting an alright looking enemy model and seeing the most realistic physics to date?

Personally, I would take good art style over technical graphics anyday. (I think that Okami looks better than Crysis. It's more appealing to my eyes.)

Graphics are important to me in games that tell a story, they help draw you into the world. Also... better graphics are always nice.... if I can have the same game only 1 version is super pretty, and the other is a jaggy-fest.... then its only normal to want the better looking one.

Kinda like women.... if I meet 2 women that are identical in every way except for appearance, then I'll take the better looking one, thank you.

I can't stress how much I hate jaggies... 1 reason I preferred the N64 over the PS1.... sure they both had jaggies, but PS1 games jaggies were ten fold.

Graphics are appealing to me simply because to me they add more to the game. I don't need special artstyles or any of the sort, I love technical graphics.

Okami looks better than Crysis.. haha.. Well graphics are important when used properly. I mean you can't just make a game look good, the game also also has to behave with the visuals. And that's something Crysis does well. For example you shoot a alien out of the sky in Crysis and it will plummet - crash through trees, those trees will fall to the ground with a loud thud. So just from taking that one enemy out you've created some chaos. And that feels good. That is when visual technology and physics begin to jump boundaries and enter into gameplay by making the game more enjoyable to play. Instead of just making the game more enjoyable to loot at.

Important. It just needs to look nice. I hate games that chug, have bad overall presentation, sloppy menus. Blurred textures, ect. Like I still think games like super mario 64, and super metroid have great graphics. However, systems need to keep pushing to the next graphical level to keep things from feeling to stagnant, or open doors to new different types of gameplay.

... To be perfectly honest, just about every game out there looks great.. There are a select few that I would consider the best, but its not the main reason why I would play them.. For instance I find Crysis amazing not because its incredible looks which alo tof games out there imo look great.. But the fact its able to do that with amazingly huge scope, and action.. As well as variety in being able to show a convincing Jungle, a zero-g environment, a frozen waste land.. And urban areas well.

This for me, after seeing games like crysis, Gears of war, and Killzone 2 I wanted something with more sytile to it. Aquria is one of the best looking games I have seen due to its art style, and its 2D.

Art style Visual direction Atmosphere (yet I dont think Stalker is pleasing to the eyes but the devs made its point) Really depends, I actually like Crysis though, I could smell the forest humidity and the sea. But I think I'll take looking at Mirrors Edge over it... it looks beautiful without ever exaggerating silly water effects.

Graphics are just as important as the gameplay.

Without graphics, you're playing a text-based game (no pictures, nothing).

Without gameplay, you're watching an animated film.

Videogames can't have one without the other under any circumstances.

Let's take a look at the word videogame:

Video = the Latin for "I see", which of course implies something that is visual.

Game = comes from the Old English word gamen, which means joy, fun, or amusement. Mirriam Webster's Dictionary defines game as an "activity engaged in for diversion or amusement.

Etymology of video.

Etymology of game.

Mirriam Webster definition of game.

Bonus:

Mirriam Webster definition of videogame (plus or minus the space)

"Video game: n. an electronic game played by means of images on a video screen and often emphasizing fast action."

Graphics are important to me because they really add to the overall experience of the game. Bad graphics can make even the best game seem terrible.

Personally i just like nice smooth and clean looking games with a good color pallette. Games like killzone 2 and call of duty look good, but i just am not as impressed with them because of how gritty and dirty they are. Its very immersive, but i would take games graphics like uncharted, and half lifes over KZ2 and cod anyday.

There are alot of indie games out there that i think look outstand just because of how clean they look. Defcon, pixeljunk shooter, eufloria, world of goo, and many other games have artstyles and graphics that add a ton to the game. If Defcon didnt have its neon colors and smooth lines it would be a very dull looking game, but since they made everything pop, it adds to the game. I guess im going more into artstyles then graphics, but its still in the same ballpark.

I hate the notion of gameplay being so much more important than visuals. It's so simplistic. A game is an entire package.

I love technology and graphics being improved constantly is amazing to me. Plus the eye candy I seriously can not wait until I'm able to play a game that looks like real life. I've wanted that since I was a kid playing Snes and Sega and I still want it now at 20. Graphical improvements are a beautiful thing.

Except nothing like that happens in Crysis. moistsandwich

Aside from coconut trees, some of the the other trees shed branches and there are saplings that do break (especially in the train level with Warhead).

At the current state of pc or consoles, not every tree or building can be blasted to bits unless the area a level occupies is very small. I don't think there's a pc (much less a console) that can handle Crysis if everything in sight can be wrecked. Someday maybe, but not now.

That said, I liked the forests and jungle in Crysis because they look like the real thing and they provide cover and concealment just like the real thing unlike its predecessor Far Cry. Never mind if I can't blow up every tree in sight.

I'm not into photorealistic either. I'm more into cleaner-looking images meaning I can't stand jaggies of any sort. Either a good dose of antialiasing, higher res, or both will do.

bigblunt537

Ah. But how close is close. Can cities be reduced to rubble or a forest/jungle reduced to a wasteland like so many photos of WW2 destruction/war zones?

I'm talking a level of destruction like in Berlin or say, Tarawa during WW2.

whats wrong with a game that brings the best hardware to its knees? i miss those kind of games. frankly its a bit pitiful that we dont have a game that an 8800GTX really really struggels with. crysis was a benchmark game...it set the bar for visual fidelity. it wasnt like the game was an completly unoptimized piece of crap....it demanded crazy hardware when it was released but the requirements were justified. going strictly be a development decision (settign aside business n all that), i would choose the crytek 2 engine over source any day of the week. its an incredible engine built with little to no compromise. i just hope crytek3 isnt a step backwards. for graphics in general...i just like games to look nice. i dont expect them to be on the cutting edge technically speaking or have loads of special effects. i have no problem switching between DS, PS2, WII, 360 and high end PC. as long as the game itself is good...im happy.

Graphics are important in games because they are the visual medium that drives the story. This is what sets the mood, atmosphere, tone, ambience and emotion in a game. Its also the vehicle for player immersion and how we interact with the story.

There's the common misconception I see here time and again, that "gameplay >>> graphics. When in actuality it's that graphics are an integral part of the gameplay.
