Actually, I have no idea, it's been so long that I think most people have forgotten. Nintendo fans are sheep because they go along with anything the company says or does, although the same could be said of Microsoft and Sony fans, so I don't know. All three would also follow their company to the death like Lemmings, and all buy the copious amounts of ridiculous garbage the churn out and are milked like cows.

The names were decided back in 2000, when System Wars was formed. At the time, the PS2 was brand new, and the general consensus against the PS2 was that Sony was milking them by releasing an expensive console with disappointing graphics (in comparison to Gamecube and Xbox) and no new games. Sony also made them by a lot of accessories, like the Hard Disk Drive that would end up being used once, a modem for the few online games that supported it, and an adaptor to use PS1 memory cards. Nintendo fans are called Sheep because they kept following Nintendo no matter how seemingly dumb their decisions were, like making the Gamecube a kids console although all the kids wanted the PS2, using an inferior storage format to the DVD (although it ended up working better, but lost a lot of support), and the comments from other fractions making fun of the Gamecube. Xbox fans are called Lemmings because at the time, everybody thought the Xbox was going to die out one year after release because it looked like nothing special and was being made by Microsoft, who at the time was having troubles with popular opinion about them not supporting their products. And it stuck to this day.

Lemmings for the RRoD, and sheep because they herd at the sound of Mario, Zelda and Metroid. I like Zelda and Metroid as the classics they are up to Wind Waker, but Twilight Princess was just boring IMO and another step away from Nintendo for me. Couldn't even finish the game.

I cant zelda on a whole. i couldnt finish any LoZ games lol. thats Majoras mask, minish cap, 4swords, orcarina of time, phantom hourglass. only one i finished was oracle of ages. I hate LoZ

It all started last generation.

Back then, PS2 owners were milked for all kinds of accessories. Multi-tap, network adaptor, memory cards, etc. The PS2 wasn't as well-equipped out-of-the-box as Xbox Owners.

I don't really know what a lemming is, but Xbox owners somehow got that name.

Nintendo owners were known as sheep because they obeyed and did whatever Nintendo said. They were considered sheeple, people who just listened to the authorities at Nintendo.

The terms really don't apply this generation. 360 owners are the real cows this time around, PS3 owners seem to be more like sheep, and I guess we can give lemmings out to Wii owners.

Correct me if I'm wrong SW veterans.
