I'll admit, I've never really seen the allure of racing sims. Does the gameplay really change from iteration to iteration? Aren't you just driving around a track, trying to beat other people? Yes, you get more cars and prettier graphics. But what really changes? What makes you keep spending money on a new racing sim?

At least with games like RPGs, you have a variety of gameplay elements (even among a certain kind, like JRPGs). With RPGs, RTSs, FPSs, TPSs, etc. you can have involving stories. I suppose the physics get better as time goes on for racing sims, that's something.

Why do you people (the ones discussing Forza 2 and GT5) go on and on about these games? What is it about them that make them so important that they must be discussed to death?

I realize I may have come across strongly here, but I really do want to know what people find so great about these things and why this specific genre seems to be of so much concern on this forum.

hmm i'd say only casual gamers enjoy playing every new iteration of a racing game, the 3 new paint jobs a year must be worth replaying the game :D

Racing sims are boring as far as I'm concerned, though Burnout is great because the whole point is smashing up other cars while you race. The only racing sim that I enjoyed was Le Mans on the Dreamcast.

I hate racing sims. I prefer games like Mario Kart, Cruising the World, and Diddy Kong Racing.

I don't think that would be a racing sim. That would be a "Smashing up other cars" sim.

Games like Mario Kart I can understand. You can throw in new weapons and powerups, which can greatly change how each race plays out. Plus, who didn't love zapping everyone else with lightning and turning them tiny in one of the Mario Karts?

Racing sims tend to look good, real good. And since all SW seems to care about is graphics, I am pretty sure that is the allure here.

it started at the release of the playstation and saturn. ridge racer and daytona was what the systems were judged by. racing games are supposed to be the best genre to showcase hardware. that is why racing games are essential to the launch of every system. sim racers have took over arcade racers in this reguard so fanboys base which system is better baseb off the tech of the games.

Realistic cars, they look good, feels more like drive real cars than like Ridge racer there you can take any curve at any speed and never need use the brakes.

Nothing to do with games actualy. It's just that GT is one of flagship Playstation series , so lemmings attack it. It's ironic because no GT game has been a true sim, even Forza2 barely qualifies as such. But both factions just want to claim ownage using any ocassion they can, racing "sims" are just another way to do it.

Yeah, because what they are called is what is really being discussed here

Lame attempt at ending the thread.

*argument reassembled*

I can see why *a* game such as Forza or GT can be entertaining (in short amounts though), but I don't see why so many sell so much.

People like racing sims becuase, unlike you, we can drive and we don't wanna race and smash up our cars. You might, but we won't. So we turn to games. What makes games better? Better, more realistic physics and more realistic graphics. That's why people buy newer racing sims.

Gran Turismo was like the only game I ever played. For like, 8 years. I couldn't drive yet so this is what I turn to every day. It's pretty much to me the only game that I can hope to do in real life.

What gets me most excited over the newer games, are the new cars.

I had to reply to all the hate here for sims.
