HD TV sales are doubling every year. You have to basically HUNT down SD TV's in most stores today. DVD players started out the same way. Sure their are plenty  more folks who have yet to own an HD TV but most people are planning on making it their NEXT Tv purchase. So this rise is going to hit a real boom VERY soon. Plus its a difference that you notice, not just in the HD but in the shape of the television sets. Movies can finally be watched in a theatrical fashion without black bars or with as little of it as possible depending on the aspect ratio. It expands your point of view in games. This is not a small leap, this is a huge step in televisions one that we haven't seen in a long long time. Its not far away either its already happening just look at the sales.

Bread_or_Decide

DVD's, HD TV's, its all the same. They take advantage of morons who are obsessed with technology. The only reason that regular people are buying HD TV's is because they will be made standard, but not for a few years yet. I honestly didnt care (nor did many others) about DVD's either, but I was forced to invest  in them due to the fact they have replaced videosand thats how campanies make money. The only difference to me between DVD's and videos is the extra content. Thats about it. Its the companies who win in the end because they save money with selling a cheaper media format at a higher price.

Yeah because DVD didn't offer anything to the consumer right? Just smaller storage space, all movies available for purchase instead of renting or buying a VHS for 100 dollars. It didn't offer clear images, features, or films in their appropriate aspect ratio.

Hey...that computer your using..blah...just use a phone. You don't need it man. In fact..throw away everything in your house...you don't need it. Electricity? Fire is just as good man. Stop being such a technology whore.

Ive never had to rent a VHS. It wasnt forced on you like your making out. Youve totally missed my point, which isnt really surprising, I know how obsessed some people are with gadgets. I buy things for function. I buy phones to call people, I buy movies to be entertained, I buy games to have a good time and immerse myself in the gameplay. I dont buy a TV just because it looks prettier, because it DOESNT offer anything. And I will say this: most ordinary people dont care much about half the extra features DVD's added besides bonus content, which I already mentioned. DVD's were a small leap. You cant compare DVD's to something as significant a electricity. Same goes for HD, its much more of a gimmick and novelty than the Wiimote, which gets a lot of flak for being a gimmick.

And if money is such an issue to you like the renting/buying a VHS point suggests, wait until HD TV's become cheaper or dont buy one, because they can be pretty expensive.......im not buying one unless I need to, and trust me, I dont need to. I will be using a standard TV set to play my 360 when I get one.

Most people don't own a HDTV....Why would someone want to pay a extra $200 for HD when they can't use the HD?

Nintendo knew that and made a system that everyone could afford

Hoobinator

Pity they forgot to cater to the avid / hardcore gamer and decided housewives were more important :|

So making Zelda, Mario, MP3, SPM and SSBM are not games games made for hardcore players has well has the housewives? I don't think someone can call them selfs hard core without playiing Zelda and Mario

Plus a true Hard Core gamer would have all three systems

Yeah that's great give us the 23rd (quite literally) iteration of these games, remember TP's biggest failings was it was too much of the same. Apart from MP3 and SSBM (maybe) it's a little been there done that. Compare that to the 360 and it has more games that cater to avid gamers coming out just this year.

Does it matter if Zelda plays to much like a Zelda game that got a 10......That not a reason for a gamer not too play Zelda....I am sorry a person can not call them self hard core with out beating the biggest games of all time which would start with Mario and be followed close by Zelda....Did you forget how many gave Zelda GOY maybe not gamespot but not everyone goes to Gamespot

Half a dozen must have proper gaming titles over the Wii's life span, no thanks, not for me.

I understand not everyone is a hard core gamer, I know I don't call myself one.....If you don't like the Wii that fine to tell you the truth I have been wanting a reason to buy the 360 for a while but so far they have not put anything out that jumps out at me.....If I did get a 360 it would have to be for the games because I don't have a HDTV...So far there is no game that makes me want a 360 "note: I am not a big fan of many gun games"

But I will get a PS3 sooner or later again not for the "HD" but for the games

They don't care about HD. They don't care about HDMI. They don't care about Blu Ray. They don't care about updates graphics. They don't care about online mutiplayer. They don't care about hard drives on consoles. They don't care about downloadable demos, trailers, or movies.

But they praise motion sensing.

Do they realize what the word...innovation reallly means?

Bread_or_Decide

They don't care because what are they gonna do? Nintendo have aimed very smartly at the casuals and won't change it because a few fans was better graphics. If they want HD, blu-ray, HDMI then by a PC, 360 or PS3.

At least it's better than cows who only care about what Sony tell them to care about.

Sony: Rumble is last-gen
Cows: rumble sucks!
Sony: rumble is back! next-gen is here!
Cows: yay rumble rocks!
Sony: DMC4 is only on PS3
Cows: omg Ps3 has won!!
Sony: we lost DMC4...
Cows: meh who cares?

Thats becaused we are GAMERS and this is a gaming forum....not tech junkies who feel the need to show off all the money they spent on some nonsense like HD. Its arrogant posers and casuals like that the sheep dont like, and I kinda feel the same way.

Why is HD nonsense?  See this is what I am talking about...

Does a higher resolution make a game good? Does a higher resolution make a movie good? Does a high resolution do ANYTHING? Er, no.......it doesnt really.

No but it makes games look better. It makes you feel like your home is a theatre when your watching a movie. The higher resolution makes it a pure joy just to look at which adds to the over all enjoyment.

Do you still make fire with a rock and sticks?

Your too far gone to be helped. I can't debate this with you if you are just going to act ignorant.

Good for you if you think it makes your home like a theatre but it just doesnt do that for many people. Ive played Oblivion at a friends house and I honestly just felt like I was playing a game, which was the whole point of it.

And the ironic thing is you call me ignorant for having my priorities different from you. You may care about silly gadgets, but thats all they are, and thats the truth of it. Even consoles are just gadgets, but a games console will do more for you than a new TV with prettier graphics ever will.

As much as I may like that, I sadly do not posses an HDTV. As far as online we know it's coming and demos, well, not sure about that. I rarely play demos anyway.

I love movies. I love movies more then I love games and yes it adds alot more to the experience.

You shouldn't even be buying new consoles. Just stick with Atari because these games today don't offer anything but pretty graphics. I'm surprised your even on the internet ya hypocrite.

Here we go, its all about the businesses. Im a simple humble gamer looking out for my own interests. Im not anti-technology, I have an MP3 player, NOT a CD player - but an HD TV simply doesnt justify its purchase for me personally.....its that simple. It serves no real function, whereas the example of an iPOD does actually do something significant that a CD player cant do. You obviously dont understand that. And you now resort to personal attacks and insults because you cannot accept the fact I want something that benefits ME and wont buy the latest tech on everyone elses judgement rather than using my own. An HD TV, like ive said does not benefit me.....if you want one, thats fine, but dont get angry because Id rather save my money for something I want

Exactly. I dont care if my SNES, Mega Drive, PC, PS2, Xbox N64 or GC dont have HD capability, I still play them sometimes. I even dusted off the old NES for some nostalgia the other week. Of course, most games arent as fun even with all the nostalgia, but the lack power didnt stop me. Some people are so stubborn they refuse to accept that some others dont share the same opinion, so they unfortunately resort to name calling and false assumptions. Ive seen it all before, its sad.

Im not anti-technology, thats why im not going to waste my money on obsolete technology like the xbox360/Ps3. While you struggle to get 60fps at 720p i will be playing this.

And my Wii when i want pure fun games. PCWii, i win!

The TC seems to be a bit confused on this matter. Technology and innovation are not always one in the same, but sometimes are. For example, every advancment you brought up has little or no real effect on how games are played. HDMI? Blu-ray? What do these do for a game? How do these directly change the way a game is played?  HDMI has zero effect, Blu-ray might, depending on how developers take advantage of it.

On the other hand, how does a silly TV remote change games? It has completely changed the way games are played. Of course, it's full potential has not yet been realized.

You have to understand the difference between tech that changes the way games are played, and tech that just makes things pretty for whatever percent of people that even have the right TV to use it.

Nintendo Wii has everyhting you mentioned downloadable now or will have, Online is on the way.

no hard-drive, but rumors are one is on the way. And it has a flash-drive.

Blu-ray is proprietary so they could not use it even if they wanted to.

HDMI = Useless without incerased resolution

The GPU is updated, devs are just not using it to any potential yet.

Just wanted to clear things up in this fanboytish thread.

I don't want a HDTV, no while the vast majority of the content will look worse than my Current TV, i don't call that an upgrade.

It'd be fine if I didn't have to pay for features I'm not going to use.

Wii doesn't do HD. So what? We can't say or do anything about it. It would be nice if it did, but it doesn't. What do you want us to say?

HarlockJC

Maybe in the US the sale of HD are going up but even if they are doubling that still a very small amount of people that own a HDTV. It is going to take about 5 years for HD TV to be in most people houses about the same time a new Nintendo would be due.

Don't get me wrong I want a PS3 "I had almost picked one up and they were sold out got a dishwasher with the same money" but it hard comming up with a extra $600 much less a extra 1000 to buy a HD TV.

What are you basing this assumtion on?HD TV's are also getting cheaper everyday, you can already pick a 32 inch HD TV up for under £500.

Its going to be mainstream much sooner imo.

I disagree. I don't think it's because Sheep don't care about HD, advances in technology, etc. IMO, I think they respect Nintendo's decision to concentrate on gaming and attempting to be innovative, and THEN moving towards better tech, HD, etc. down the road.

They do care, but they pretend not to, they go with what they are given and kiss it's butt despite whatever flaws it may have, that is in and of itself the definition of a sheep, or a fanboy of any console. Blind loyalty. Don't worry about it too much, there is only a small percentage of kids who can't be realistic about their console's weakness.

Right, which is something console owners didn't have until recent years. I, myself, am not an "HD fanboy" or anything, but I happen to have an HD TV and playing Gears of War on HD is just a bonus for me. I enjoyed it even before I got HD, so it's all good. Even without HD, Gears looked amazing.

Yeah. Thats exactly why im wondering. Im primarily a PC gamer. I've been playing games in HD for almost a decade, but NOW is when an increase in resolution is such a great thing? You are pretty much pitching the argument that "games in color look so much better than in black and white." Yeah....we know. Thanks for telling us ancient history.

Most of you console gamers have been playing without HD for nearly a decade while PC gamers have been playing in HD. You were able to live through it while others had something to enjoy that you didnt. I dont think Wii fans will care that much. Did you care about HD before this gen nearly as much considering HD was always around?

So I could in theory buy a Wii and 360 for the price of an HD TV then.

HD TV = >£500

Wii = £180

360 (premium)  = £280

= £460

Fair enough if some would rather have the HD TV, but I would rather have both those game consoles. Actually, I hope the 360 drops in price soon.......

That may be so, but just because they are getting less expensive doesnt mean people are just going to buy it cause its gone down a few quid, £500 pounds or $1000 is still not cheap for most people. I doubt the majority will buy a new HDTV if their current SDTV is still working just fine.

We're not anti-technology. We just don't want it at the expense of affordability. I mean $600? Hell no! Heck, $250 seems too much. If they can't keep the console affordable, then don't bother with all the HD and giga flops jazz please, we're not all super geeks here.

Honestly, (yes, I'm pulling this percentage out of my ass) 90% of people today don't give a crap about HD. Plus, HD/ Blu-ray are not really "innovations" but more like evolution of technology.

You would give a crap about it if you played a game on it, and then go back an play NON-HD game. If 90%of people dont care about HD then why did almost 11 million people buy an HD game system. Not only that how many people do have an HD TV more than 10% of people

Isn't an entertaining life better than a life without entertainment? If you believe a fun life to be better, then why doesn't more entertainment bring us a better life. If you don't believe a fun life to be better I don't understand your logic.

Most new tech takes about 5 to 10 years to become main stream.......You are right about some HDs are going down but there is still a huge cost....the cheapest HDTV on Bestbuy was a $540 where a person can get a normal TV for $200 dollars less....that is a low end HD which has you know is not that great.....Now the next problem is that most people have a TV and TVs last years...If my TV went I would look at getting a HD but right now it works find and I save my self at least $600

yeah it's so funny how console gamers ooo'ed and aaaah'ed over their console games last gen while pc games were HD and blew them away. they didn't care. they didn't come scrambling for pc's. but now that they have a couple of pc wanna be consoles they are claim last gen graphics make their eyes bleed.

Exactly. By that same logic HD technology could improve someone's life as it brought them entertainment.

I just got a TV which can do HD for my birthday (£200) it be nice to go up to 720 but it doesnt matter because i all ready chose to go from 560i (50hz) down to 480p (60hz) just so i dont get bulring in Sonic. now to address you pionts 1) it be nice to have HD but i still rather take the wii mote over HD 2) HDMI? do you even know what HDMI is? if you did you wouldent even mention it. Its like a slave going look at my cool chains. HDMI is an excuse to screw you out of more money 3) It a game not a movie it doesnt need to take up 25 gb. also the read speeds are realy bad for blue ray. 4) Of coure we care to some exsent about graphics we like it when some effort is putting to our games making them look good, but its the make or break aspect. 5) Did you not see the sheep crying over Ninty desion not to have a proper online system? 6) Hard drives? nah i rather have my flash chips but rumour has it that there is a hard drive on the way. 7) WE want DEMO's we just dont get them 8) WE do get trailers thought our internet channel 9) movies? i have a DVD player in the side of my TV for that. its a games console not a DVD player the expansion along road map and Ripping people of with HDMI doesnt count as INNOVATION
