Hey,

As the title says, why are so many opposed to Motion Controls? I hear things like "I dont want to swing my hands constantly, i'll get tired while I'm trying to relax by gaming" which is really exaggerated imo, when I'm playing Metroid Prime 3 my hand holding the Wii-mote is resting on the side of the chair, its quite relaxing.

Ontop of that Motion Controls are imo the only controls that can touch a mouse/keyboard for precision. Whenever I go back to dual sticks when playing a shooter or any other game that requires some sort of precision I feel almost like a handicap. Ofc there are always games that are played better with a normal controller so there should always be the option for that.

By no means do I say that the Wiimote is perfect, infact it could use alot of improvements since if position your hand in such a way to be able to tap A button easier the D-pad and the controls below become a pain to reach.

So, why are so many "hardcore" gamers opposed to Motion Controls?

I always lay down when playing. I just don't like that concept of playing.

I don't mind if someone likes it. I just hope that it will not become the only way of playing games

I think a lot of gamers crap on motion sensing because it takes them out of their normal "thumb-use" comfort. In some ways, you have to retrain yourself to play with motion controls. Not to mention, many times motion controls aren't used correctly. For instance, the six-axis has games that use it but give no option for sensitivity. And that makes for horrible gameplay. Also, there are many strides yet to be made on the technologies used to sense gamer's motions. I think next gen we'll some improvement and it will be more well-received by adult, hardcore, gamers.

Really? You lay down? Crazy. In a serious game sometimes I feel the need to sit up straight, get square with the TV, and concentrate on what I am doing., If I lay back and let loose, I feel it affects my gameply. Kudos to you if you can still play attentively while laying down.

It took me about 2 hrs of playing Zelda to find out motion controls suck atm. When it takes me more than 10 mins to copy a special move (the part where you have to mimic the special move and you can't go on until you do) there is a problem. Honestly the contorls are not precise enough to make it an option over normal controllers (IMO of course). aside from playing sports, motion controls = crap to me.

I don't like the motion controls all that much yet because the controls don't feel tight. Precision may not be that bad, but the delayed response annoys me. It should function like pointing a laser pointer but it doesn't.

People fear progress. It's something unknown to them as it's new.

Someone will come along and give an accessory that tried this before but they're not going to mention the Wii mote is a main controller and not an accessory. Doing that would require some form of common sense and reasonability.

Myself I'm glad we're not still using Coleco pads for gaming. We'd still be using such if people would be so anti towards progress.

I grew up with the nes controller, I've always played with a controller, and hopefully it'll always be a controller. Wii motion just doesn't feel right for gaming, it just doesn't do all the actions I need it to do in a game

Why do people always pick the bad examples? Has anyone among you played Metroid Prime 3 or Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, if you think it's crap that's fine by me, but don't come telling me Zelda this and rippoff34099324 that is bad, ofc the're bad. Motion Controls are only incredibly good for certain genres, shooters in particular.

However, I can understand some not wanting simply because of ''habit'', we've always had normal controllers, so I guess that's a point.

An equally skilled player with a Wiimote will rolfstomp any other gamer using dual sticks if you're playing ANY shooter, given that the control shematic is good.

This would be difficult to prove. :/ But I understand your point. Basicly the only way to prove it to you is tell you to go play said games on a Wii and see for yourself. You can judge from the singleplayer alone that the controls are incredible.

It is not like when I sleep of cours, lets say something in between, only my head must be in vertical position because I need good view on TV. But still playing in that position with motion controls will be difficult I would have to sit down. But then I can't relax. I like to relax when playing

Don't act like the Wii remote is perfect for shooting. The original versions of RE4 had a simple laser sight, Wii version needed a huge reticule that covers the whole head of a Ganados to even be equal.

Well it's defeniantly better then dual sticks, but as I said not perfect. Something like K/M >> Motion Controls >>>>>>>>> Dual Sticks. Most will say it's opinion. this is partially correct. Of course a certain control scheme can feel better then the other but you have to look at the potential imo. With that I mean, if you're playing all 3 controls on a daily basis and got used to all 3, understanding the weaknesses/strengths you can decide which one is simply better. Eventho you might like how another control scheme feels.

I don't think many people actively 'oppose' motion controls, I just think they're maybe waiting for this new system to prove itself - at the moment, there are very few games that show off its potential - as you've said MP3 kind of stands alone.

I think it's like how the DS was first received, with the whole 'gimmick' label - obviously, with stuff like Brain Training and Trauma Center etcetc, no-one really uses that word. The Wii simply needs a boost of really innovative games, and hopefully that'll come with MotionPlus. The sixaxis on the other hand... well, I don't think it's possible to incorporate elements of the classic controller design with new motion-sensing technology - the logistics of it really call for something shaped differently.

I agree with a lot of posters who say that it'd probably be best to wait 'til next generation, when technology is far enough along so that we can have proper 1:1 movement (and hopefully great graphics too!).

I'm not opposed to the controls, I'm opposed to the games. I don't have a problem with a new approach, just as long as it's a good approach. I loved and still love Wii bowling, but I'm not getting a console just to play a packin title.

Though motion controls are an interesting idea, they are often implemented poorly in games in terms of both mechanics and quality.

Now, some games have made great use of motion control. Super Mario Galaxy's controls are an example of this becaues they don't feel tacked on and actually make you feel like it's the way the game is supposed to be played. However, many games nowadays are developed with standard controllers in mind, then all of a sudden the developers go "O Hay Wait Theres A Motion Controller On This Platform". They're then implemented very poorly into the game's final structure, and ultimately feel tacked on and unnecessary.

i think its a great concept, and i have immense fun whenever im at my friends place, duking it out on the wii. But at the end of the day, when i get home from school, i like to just throw myself on the couch, laying on my tummy with my feet waving in the air and the six-axis controller infront of me, just taking it mellow. :)

Motion controls lack the natural feedback present in the activities they replicate. Try swinging a golf club without being able to feel the weight of the club or the twist of the shaft. Try driving a car without being able to feel the aligning torque in the wheel. Without such feedback, it's much more difficult to make mid-motion corrections.

The exception to this is pointing, where the feedback is provided by your eyes, not your hands. Anyone notice what the Wiimote is best at?

Because their console manufacturer of choice told them not to like motion controls.

It's not like it really matters. If you don't enjoy motion controls, then it's best you quit this hobby in the next few years. By next generation, you won't have a choice.

I disagree... or rather, I HOPE you are wrong. Motion controls very well may be on all three companies consoles, but I would hope it would at least only be an option. To force it on us, would alienate alot of long time gamers, I think.

Probably because the Wii has made such a bad first impression on them, the motion sensing controls for the Wii are far from perfect and Nintendo have confirmed this by planning to release motion+ (which seeing as it hasn't arrived yet I would assume has issues too).

I forgot to add that I purchase video games for a rental store. When I went to E3 (back then when it wasn't crap) I remember seeing the Wii for the first time. Everyone was like "wow, this is so cool.......Wii sports rock". Everyone just ignored the fact outside of that game everything else felt awkward. I remember watching one dev showing this game (it was somekind of generic game that Wii always has) where the main character has a sword and can do all these special moves. Just as I predicted the guy is trying to show off the moves and COULDN'T do it. He kept saying "ok let me show you this unique attack".....then he does somekind of wiggle wagging......"oops, let me try that again"......then he goes on for the next 30 seconds trying to do it to no avail. Eventually he just goes on ignoring the fact the controls were broken. That's how I felt every time I played a game that wasn't a sports game. I commend Nintendo for getting the masses to by the machine for WiiFitt and party games but everyone needs to just STOP trying to convince me the Wii controls are some great invention that everyone should just love. It's a gimmick at the moment since it can't be used in most games.

Because arguably, there isn't a single game that is truly better or that could not have been made without motion controls. VGobbsesser
Play ProEvo 2008 soccer and tell me that a standard controller is better.

A good developer CAN use them well in many ways ... problem is, most people developing them just don't have a clue how to use them. I think many are like quite a few people on this site - who have decided they don't want to like motion controls [or don't know gaming before the current control-generation] and cannot think outside the box as needed to implement these controls well. All IMO.

It's because gamers are used to an inferior control system.

Well...get used to it.

No. No, I wont get used to it. Motion control is one thing, but if everything goes the "way of the waggle" like the Wii, and I have no choice anymore, then I am officially done with the hobby.

Seconded Big time ! The Wiimote is for and marketed to the non gamer or more casual video gamer who is normally overwhelmed by the superior but much more complex dual analog controller.
