I don't understand how Sony and MS are expect they can corner casual gamers away fron Nintendo. Let me list a few reasons why both Natal and Move will fail:

  1. Nintendo has already taken a solid chunk of the casual gaming market for this generation
  2. Hardcore gamers may own multiple systems; casual gamers usually stick with just one (Wii)
  3. Both Natal and Move are add-ons - meaning that the vast majority of 360 and PS3 owners are hardcore gamers and the minority have any interest in these add-ons. Do they expect the casual gamer to invest $300 for a system then pay even more for the add-on?
  4. The casual gamer will have to pay nearly double the cost of a Wii to play the 360 or PS3 counterpart. Most casual gamers aren't going to invest that much money for casual gaming.

Look at my sig, I'm not a Nintendo fanboy. Wii is fun here and there, but its not for me. I think it would be smart for MS and Sony to start looking in the future of how they can take some casual gamers but its too late in this generation to start trying to take the casual market share from Nintendo IMO. They're just going to be left in the dust next gen in terms of casual gaming.

Because they believe there is still alot of untapped marketshare out there, not to mention potentially steal from Nintendo. Natal could also have a wider application than just videogames.

If this gen. lasts longer then previous gens. we COULD possibly see a sharp decline in Wii owners and sharp incline in PS3/360 as many people find that they can get their motion mini game fix along with quality games and HD movies. It is very possible that a lot of current Wii owners might jump ship when these peripherals arrive and the PS3/360 are even cheaper. Who knows, in the end I think from now own gaming systems will have two standard controls, one motion and one normal because motion is in no position to take over but still brings new customers.

Natal and The Move will both fail hard. Why pay a bunch for another add on just to play a few games a different way. I'd probably rather buy a Wii, not for the tech but for the games. That's saying a lot for me.

I dont know why. Id much rather both had stuck to their guns...theres a reason wii doesn't get much play in my house I don't like motion controls and there has been about 2 games on the system that actively interested me... *though the last story looks to be the 3rd*

well , they wont succeed, but every things is worth a shot ,

arc/move is nearly 100 !

and natal at a 100 -200 price point ,

that is = fail remember you may need 4 controllers!

so your spending 400 compared to 150 at the most for wii natal is 50 more you only need one ,

so the only thing i see even taping into that so called untapped market is 360s natal ,

ps3 would barely tap it at the price their asking ,

bad enough controllers are 60 a peice

this should be 54 ,99 -then they should drop the controlllers to 29-34 range, like ms has a 34 dollar wired controller for 360 ,,

so ya ,, i dont get it either thier add-ons, just think even those who havent chosen ,

do you think theyll want to pay 400 total -ps3 is 300 , the add-on -100

just for motion sensing ,, -its already confirmed to be exactly a wii plus type accessory no difference

and they also copied the nunchuck

lol ,,,

just get a wii for 199,99

if you want graphics get a 360 or ps3 to go along side it and if your like me , ,

just get all 3 but not these add-ons,

they are waste of money,

sega cd/32x any one , remember these things

they had support at first but then it weened off ,

because the newer console , what do you think is gonna happen ,, in 2-3 more years

ps4 and 720 and wii 2 -with the later already to be confirmed in development

so what are you picking

natal

arc

wii 2

720

or ps4

any one who choses choice 1 and 2 , , are deffinatelly in for a disappointment

Yeah, but look at the marketing model:

Wii: $200

360: $200 arcade + $100? Natal (nothing official I've seen) = $300

PS3: $300 + $100 = $400

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo did another price drop right as this all happens. But we all have to remember who we are dealing with. Casual gamers. Casual gamers are the ones who buy the cheap crappy laptops that don't last a year. Hardcore gamers invest $2k into a gaming rig. Not many casual gamers are going to pay $100 to $200 more and honestly if they already have a Wii, more than likely that'll suffice for the little gaming they do play.

You can buy a Wii instead , but others might just buy the add-on to get their motion fill and what they really want. I could imagin some dude saying to himself , I heard that Tiger Woods game on Wii has pretty dope and more fun than the other versions .... I wouldn't mind trying it out. Oh snap , you mean now it's also coming to PS3 with better graphics and trophies? All I need to buy is the controller instead of a console?

Personally i might buy the Move if they add it lets say to Killzone 3 and wouldnt mind getting some of the motion games too while im at it, wayy cheaper than me going to get a Wii

Like I said it's for the games, and Tiger Woods wouldn't be one of them :| If it's Socom 4 or Forza 4 i'd rather play with the controllers. And I would buy a Wii for Zelda or Mario, something you don't necessarily need waggle for. I'm not going to buy a Wii, but i'd rather.

I think Sony should just concentrate on the core gamers. Move is very similar to the Wii, and most casual gamers already have a Wii. It's the core gamers that feel the Wii is lacking in good games. So if Sony just concentrated on the core gamers, I think they could atleast steal some core gamers away from the Wii. But judging from the games they showed the only game that looks like it will interest core gamers is Socom 4, and maybe that fighting game. All the rest was the same old crap you can get on the Wii.

As for Natal, I can see Casual gamers getting it because it is atleast some what different from the Wii. They will walk into a store and be like what!? you can control games with your whole body now, Sweet!

Because Nintendo should pay for putting a last generation POS out adding Gun-con ifra-red tracking and selling it as new tech. They added nothing to advance gaming, nor did they create a platform for expaning creativity. Once devs realized that all it is Gun-con motion control it was flooded with shovel-ware. Wii is nothing but a marketing masterpiece. I even bet Nintendo didn't put some of their money into R&D for future inovation, just intotheirpocketation.

Now that Natal and Move are announced, it'll expose Wii for what it really is.

I personally have never liked the motion controls on the Wii, they just dont feel very precise to me. I dont mind the casual games like Wii Ssorts and what not, but playing the Wii at 480p really puts me off, as well as the online on the system. Now I will give these motion controls of sony a chance, since they are optional for the PS3. I dont think motion controls are the future of gaming, but there does seem to be a market for them.

Both are late and will not have a impact at all. Casuals already have the cheap wii with the games catered to teh motions. Who cares if theres a "Wii Sports" in HD or "Wii Fit" in 720 pees? If this was 2006, WOW, since its not, its MEH. Time for Nintendo to come out with yet another game changer that will WOW everyone like they did at E3 2006.

this probably makes the most sense.

people will see Move "That a Wii-mote?" they're going to recognize what's 'in' or what has been most popular, they won't see past what Nintendo already did this generation.

Natal has the discernible differences, but may not work as well as MS promises. probably won't, but it's not out, so I can't pass judgment on that portion of the situation.

I don't think they are trying to compete with Nintendo... I think they are trying to beat each other by doing what Nintendo did to get such a high user base. At the end of the day, Sony & MS are still mostly interested in the old "set top box" theory. They want to be the portal in most homes for accessing content (games, movies, and music). With the extra benefit of royalties from other developers to let them use said box as well. Nintendo really just wants a place to make their own games 1st, royalties second. With no interest in being a portal for other content.

Let me end it like this. Nintendo knows what they are doing and its the reason why they are very successful. They make FUN games for people to play. That alone is important for gaming, fun. Expect Nintendo to continue this formula while MS and Sony scratch their heads and act like sheep.

Basically they want to make the profit in the hardcore section of the market since Nintendo is already dominating the casual gamer market.

ITT: people believe that casual gamers think like hardcore gamers. Do casuals care about graphics? Obviously not. Do casuals care about HD? Obviously not. Do casuals care about shovelware? No, they love it!

Using the logic of a hardcore gamer to explain a casual gamer = fail.

MS and Sony better stick to their guns or they are going to not be able to please either audience.

You are underestimating the size of the expanded market. They aren't 60 million people. Not 500 million. But 6 billion. Now that Nintendo showed them there was stuff on the other side of the wall, why would they stay put?

as sad as 2 consoles sharing 90% of software, which by this cant make a name for one another? there not called hd twins for nothing. it makes more sense to have 2 console on this market this gen, rather than 3. it should of been just wii and one of the hd twins this gen.

i do buy games, but the fact is that theres just better games on ps3/360. i mean do really expect me to buy games like madworld and no more heroes over uncharted 2, mgs4, fallout3, bad company 2, demon's souls etc. no just no.

I don't understand how Sony and MS are expect they can corner casual gamers away fron Nintendo. Let me list a few reasons why both Natal and Move will fail:

  1. Nintendo has already taken a solid chunk of the casual gaming market for this generation Sony and MS want a piece of that pie, and you can't blame them for that.
  2. Hardcore gamers may own multiple systems; casual gamers usually stick with just one (Wii) Any numbers to support this claim? Link, maybe?
  3. Both Natal and Move are add-ons - meaning that the vast majority of 360 and PS3 owners are hardcore gamers and the minority have any interest in these add-ons. Do they expect the casual gamer to invest $300 for a system then pay even more for the add-on? Don't we already do that? Ever hear of Rock Band or Guitar Hero?
  4. The casual gamer will have to pay nearly double the cost of a Wii to play the 360 or PS3 counterpart. Most casual gamers aren't going to invest that much money for casual gaming. The "casual gamer" usually isn't the one buying the system... it's their parents. Wii is tons of fun, and that's what kids need to play. Parents want more features, like those found in the 360 & PS3. Why buy two systems when one can do it all? Sony and MS intend for their systems to be the complete home enterainment/media hub... so they need to offer everything the competition has in addition to what they offered initially, i.e. Netflix.

This gen is not even halfway through (according to the 10 yr lifespan goals by Sony & MS). Let's say we have 4-5 years left for this gen. Nintendo Wii has achieved its success in less than 4 years. My math tells me that's plenty of time for Sony & MS to try to get some of that market-share from Nintendo. What's the point of competition if you're not going to try and outdo what your competitors are doing? If this is what you're suggesting, then Sony & MS should just roll-over and play dead while Nintendo reaps its rewards. Thankfully for us this isn't how it works.

My response to TC is in "blue" text above. I think both Sony and MS will have success with their respective motion controllers. All we hear is people crying about how "last gen" the Wii's games are. So, imagine if you could have the fun of the Wii while playing your PS3 or 360. I know it's not just graphics that make a game, but very few Wii games are of exceptional quality... especially 3rd party titles aka shovelware.

as sad as 2 consoles sharing 90% of software, which by this cant make a name for one another? there not called hd twins for nothing. it makes more sense to have 2 console on this market this gen, rather than 3. it should of been just wii and one of the hd twins this gen.

dont be silly, they arent twins

they are clones :P

They are looking into the future, and instead of releasing a half assed product similar to the start that Nintendo got off to, they are releasing an add on that while slightly serious about it, is more of a what works and what doesn't opportunity for the major product next gen. Thats my opinion at least. I don't think they intend to beat Nintendo at their own game, but rather figure out how to best them for next gen by experimenting this gen.

Nintendo only succeeded with the Wii is because they made the Parents believe that they kids will get some kind of exercises playing the Wii
