You would of had to pre-order the Wii months early to get it, but with the PS3 you can get it very near launch
Well apparently the supply issues that plagued the Japanese and North American launches have long been dealt with. There are far more PS3 available so it will take awhile for it to be completely sold out, if it even happens.
- Reduced backwards compatability - At the same time costs more than the "complete" versions of the console - The feeling that Europe isn't apprechiated by Sony - Sony is doing overkill for number of units released due to shortages incurred with the launches in America. I don't think they want to have more press over how someone was shot over a PS3
But I don't live in Europe so this is all just opinion.
Its been the same story here in the US at least in Florida anyway, PS3s on the shelf as well as 360s and no Wiis. The lack of a PS2 converter chip has got to be a serious blow to European gamers though.:(
Stores other than Game are having the opposite happen. They are getting so many reserves that they can't guarantee people to get them. My understanding is Game is like a gamestop over here and there is some backlash towards them for the business practices.
As far as I can tell, PS3 won't sell out here at all (UK). Partly because of the amount that is being shipped over here but also because of a lack of demand.
Major retailers may be claiming that they cannot guarantee a PS3 for launch but thats just so that there is no backlash from the public if they don't get their PS3s on launch (i.e. saving themselves from the trouble they had at Wii launch where people who had pre-ordered months before didn't get Wiis and then complained about it later).
Whatever happens Sony will claim victory as they will sell more than Wii and 360 did at their launches simply due to the sheer number of PS3s being shipped. However I don't think they'll sell out. In fact if I can get the funds together (currently have £235) then I'm just going to walk into a store and pick one up during the morning of launch.Â

Woolworths did, play only said they were getting tons of preorders (i think it was in that order). And amazon said that the preorders were doing very well too. This threads are just a must have in SW

Brand name.
The Xbox brand is about as low as it can get after last generation it contained hardly any titles that were popular in Japan and not a single JRPG.
Meanwhile people trust that the Playstation brand will eventually bring them the games that they want and they know at the very least it will have GT, MGS and FFXIII. Three of the most popular franchises in Japan.
People are prepared to buy a PS3 for potential in Japan as they trust the brand. The 360 will not sell untill the library contains enough content to justify owning the console
It has no great games and it cost 600 dollars yet its still sold about 2 millon. ( more then the 360 and PS2 did during its time period) imagine how well it will do when the good games come out this summer.

having items sell out quickly may give good publicity, but it doesn't bring in the money.. sony wre doing a good job with supply and demand, they're not undersupplying or over supplying, so if you can still get a PS3 thats a good thing.. except i wouldn't want one at that price anyway

totally true, the demand isnt there. I pre ordered my wii in September at GAME and i was 10th in the list already on the day pre orders opened. I think your going to be able to walk in and buy the PS3 on launch day. And thats even with sony attempting to create fake demand by not shipping enough units (as they always do) Sony will have a bad launch. They might pick up later though, once the ps3 has some good games some decent firmware, a proper price tag and a new controller that doesnt give your thumbs cramp.
I don't know what the atmosphere is like in Europe but i don't see why the European launch won't be as successful as the Japanese and American launches.

Yea, but bear in mind 80% or so of the numptys that pre order the POS3 wont be reading up on it, so they may not even realise the reduced backwards compatability... Expect plenty of returns! :)

Its already been confirmed that PS3 has been the highest preordered console so far ever in the UK, so anybody saying its going to flop is just stupid, they should know by now UK= Sony Land.
