Why can't you install games to the HDD on PS3 always?

It's a major disadvantage imo. I've recently been playing alot of MLB the Show and while there is a small install at first it's not complete. Playing through the show mode is a huge pain, due to the fact you have to spend 5 minutes loading each game. Not like a fictional 5 minutes, but truly 5 freaking minutes. It's crazy. Why can't I just install the full game to my HDD, things would be so much eaiser that way. I try not to get into the whole 360 vs PS3 thing, but thats a major win for 360 imo.

MS patented that ability on consoles.

I dunno, sorta wondered why myself. :P

you can install only psn downloadable games , others still require the game disk in the optical drive even after install, i think because if you could just install the game , you could resell the game disk while still keep it installed and play it

Then they should do what Microsoft did and make it so that the disc needs to be in the drive for the game to start from the HDD.

Exactly. I know Sony loves blu ray and everything, but no disk format can match the speed a HDD offers. If I could install all my games on the PS3 I'd totally install a SSD.

u act like installing the full game makes the loading times non existent. Mass effect , l4d 2 & orange box have horrible loading times for the 360 and i have them installed. Orange box is especially horrible... it feels like every 'check point' it decides to load during several courses of a level (in hl2 for example) It depends on the game to be honest. mw2 has no installs on the ps3 and its very quick

It improves load times regardless. It also depends on the drive you have in your system. I have a pretty nice HDD in my PS3. The one that originally comes with the PS3 sucks.

I've started doing this with my 360.

Just install the games that I'm playing. Can't complain about faster loadtimes.

I wish you could install games. I never understand why lems try claim ownage when a PS3 game has mandatory install. If you aren't installing your 360 games you're doing it wrong and I wouldn't expect it to last long.

Optional is better than mandatory.

And you don't have to install your games. You're not doing anything wrong.

I think they should at least give you the option, if it will improve performance. i have the UC2 PS3 slim and the HDD is just taken up by a s*** tonne of demos.

Because some of the games have like 50GB, so HD space is a concern. And given that slow-ass blu ray drive, it would probably take forever to install.

imagine installing an entire library of blu-ray discs onto your hdd. that would be horrendous unless you swissknife an external 3TB hdd.

The average ps3 game is like 8 gigs. Only a hand full of games use more than 10 gigs. Very few games actually use the blu ray space. Their actually isn't a single PS3 game that uses all 50 gigs. Even KZ3 which has two version of the game on the disk doesn't.

Wow... I thought PS3 games were bigger for some reason. I guess I thought all the uncompressed foreign language audio tracks required more room.

Grawse

they claim ownage because the game will not run without an install and if you are installing anyway the ps3 could have just shipped with a dvd drive or a floppy drive or a tape deck.

it is as if a car company sold me an electric car then gave me a generator that runs on gasoline to charge it up.

what is the point of blu ray if the system requires installs?

It really would be an awesome feature. I'd use it all the time (like I do on 360).

The biggest advantage by installing is that the disc drive will last longer. This is more important on the X360 since the DVD drive in general is crap. The BD drive in the PS3 is a bit better in terms of durability.

reading from a HDD is always faster then a disc, and it gretly reduces texture pop-in on the 360

It's a developer choice. Some games do allow it, though I can only think of 2, UT III and SF IV. I don't even know if it's the whole game in these instances, but there is an optional install.

My guess would be because you don't really need to. The 360 option was a result of the noise the 360 made when using the disc drive, and the faulty disc drives that brok often. They needed a way to mitigate that problem, so they wouldn't have to spend as much repairing them.

You do understand there is a big performance increase with the data on the HDD.
