Why did GTA IV have performance and technical issues when it first came out on PS3/360 when it's supposed to be the most polished GTA game ever? I mean there are texture pop-ins,framerate drops, hitches and sometimes even freezing issues,is that because maybe the PS3/360 bit more than they can chew with this game? Or it's just not that polished?

Thanks.

im not gonna play the blame game *cough(multiplat) but imo the game was lackluster and extremely over-rated.GTA4 comes out on next-gen consoles and fails to rise above san andreas and vice city. i did enjoy the multiplayer though

Yeah but when it was released it was bricking PS3s. I remember that... it was one of the reasons I was about to buy a 360 but then I learnt about the RROD.

GTAIV's performance is horrible, at least on the PS3. I haven't played the 360 version enough for a valid opinion, but it has bad framerate on PS3 which is most unfortunate. It has improved with patches and time, but it is still pretty bad. Its framerate is probably on the same level as San Andreas was on the PS2.

It's funny, I saw many threads on SW when GTAIV had recently been released, and so many people were claiming that it ran "smooth as butter." I guess that's a relative expression.

yeah i bought the PS3 version and whenever you drove more than 20mph the framerate started dipping like crazy, when you got up to like 70mph the game had horrible framerate

and the game was super blurry 100% of the time, it just plain looked ugly as hell

compare that with Prototype and Crackdown tho, those games have tons of stuff going on with huge draw distances and solid framerates and no blurring either (albeit both also use more simple graphics but both also require much faster performance levels still)

.. How do we know those are technical issues? And not issues that the consoles lack of resources could not properly display the environment to what the devs wanted? Popins are usually not "glitches" but corners cut to make the game playable on a set standard of specs.

I'm the kinda GTA player that likes to go cause as much chaos and carnage in the world. Going on killing sprees and getting as much police etc. after me is how I like to play the game, with artistic use of all the weapons from the shotguns to the grenades. GTA Vice City on PC was absolutely epic for this. Sadly, GTAIV's framerate just can't keep up with how I like to play the game. If it did, it would probably be my favourite GTA game.

PS I'm not a psycho, this is just how the GTA sandbox formula works best. Try it in the online free mode.

It was too ambitios in graphics and in scale. Too much for consoles. PC version runs and looks amazing though after a patch.

the games engine was simply ahead of its time for 360/ps3 hardware even with high end pc hardware the framerate can get a little shoddy but oh man, if gta4 ran at a constant 60fps on the consoles, that'd be glorious

I agree, while it certainly suffered from lots of annoying technical issues, that didn't prevent it from becoming my favorite game of all-time.

Sometimes when firefights get very intense the framerate drops can become a major issue with the game.

True, but the only time I've had it come to that extreme is when going for the blow up 10 cars in 10 seconds achievement.

It's not the consoles fault

The pc version got 1.0 lower than the console versions

It is the game itself.

New engine.

I bought it when it was onsale for 5 bucks on steam.

I feel I got ripped off because of the non-existent optimization.

Yeah, but there were also some intense missions like the bank robbery mission which had some serious framerate dips because of the intense action going on.

As far as I can tell, there's quite a bit of polish in the game. There is pop-in, but name on open world game with as much detail as GTA4 that doesn't have pop-in.

I don't recall the PS3 versions having any issues on my two playthroughs. Obviously the view distance wasn't great compared to what's possible (as seen on the PC version), but I never really noticed that kind of stuff when I was playing it on the PS3. The PC version is a little disappointing because it takes such a beefy computer to run. I just don't understand how a computer that clearly outclasses consoles can only run it a bit better. I think trying to use high-quality textures is really dragging down my framerate.

The Xbox360 played and performed better then the PS3 version and the PC version was not optimized properly or you needed a a fairly hefty rigg to get the most out of it.

Just try driving a car at a speed of 70mph or more and you'll know what I mean.
