Was it because that developers wanted it or what? No other major console since the first Xbox has used X86 architecture that i'm aware of. What advantages does the X86 really bring to the table.

It just makes it easier for developers to make games because that is the pc standard.

Easier and cheaper, and probably nobody was willing to share in the R&D for a totally unnecessary new processor. But also, developers should have a much easier time with it. Pretty sure this is what developers wanted.

> Easy to develop for. > Less investments in R&D. > Less resources to build up games with that architecture. > Way cheaper than a custom architecture (like Teh Cell). And a few other reasons.

This is all. Sony really messed up last gen by having such a difficult architecture for developers to work with. They apologized and this gen they're doing a full 180 by having more developer friendly hardware, and it's cheaper (Which will be nice for the final price).

Cheaper than investing in a custom processor + it's easier for developers since they are used to that type architecture so that too makes it cheaper to make the games since they get the job done much faster

All games programers learn on the x86 platform. Making it much easier to make games. Think of it this way your a english speaking person and I want you to write a paper in spanish. It would make a hard job nearly impossible for most people.

That is incorrect ps4 has a x86-64 AMD "Jaguar", 8 core processor. Which is a 64bit processor like all the others we have now days.p4s2p0

which is an x86 based architecture

Much cheaper, much easier to optimize for in their compiler, and its a instruction set that allows them to share code much more easily between their platforms.

Its long overdo.  The Emotion Engine was a mess, but the Cell really bit Sony in the ass.

They also pretty much bought a off the shelf chip design, so RnD costs are down significantly.

Sony was stupid with the ps3 that's why. They spent money to make something that truly didn't help them in the end and just throw it at devs "here you go you figure it out..."

Backwards compatibility via hardware would increase the cost of the system.

BC is overrated - all ps3 games were made to suite the cell - i would think it would be difficult to get them working on the ps4.
