They didn't do nearly as well as they did in other parts in the world. Why did the Wii and 360 dominate in the States?

Launched way too expensive and remained so for a while. Lacked a decent library until a few years into the gen. Xbox 360 was more popular.
I mean, all things considered, it did alright even in the US. But yeah, it didn't stand up to the Wii and Xbox 360's utter domination here as well as it did in the rest of the world.
The PS3 announcement was almost as bad as the X1 anouncement. They did not deserve the sales until later on when it was at an affordable price and with a couple of worthwhile exclusives. In a sense, its failure in the start was what made it a good console later on and that was a good thing.
The difference is, Sony managed to revive the PS3 while Nintendo and MS did not with the WiiU and X1 respectively. That tells us something about wich of these companies deserves success the most... and it shows

Didn't the X1 sell more YoY over the past 2 years? How is that not reviving what was essentially a dead console after it's reveal and launch? You trying to say it's not a success because it's not selling as much as the PS4?
I think everyone forgets that Sony thought no one wasn't gonna buy Xbox 360 when it launch late in 2005, Sony thought they could set back and wait to release PS3 late 2006 with the high price $599 and it backfired them for awhile. At least Sony had loyal fans buying there console at launch, I was there at launch, long lines on waiting to get my hands on the console and for the most parts, it was the cheapest Blu-Ray you get get for that price when Blu-Ray players were still high price at it's time.
Xbox 360 was cheaper then PS3, it launch early then PS3 did and the 360 stay pretty good until after 2010, MS got lazy with the exclusive games and PS3 catch up to 360 sales in no time.
It did poorly when you compare it to the competition. Gamers were choosing 360 to play games on and consumers were buying more Wiis. But the PS3 itself wasn't that bad. I mean sure if you compared it to the dominate PS2 era it came out from, hell yeah the PS3 was a total disaster. It was suppose to bury the Xbox brand but nope it failed to do that and failed to meet the expectation because of how dominate the PS2 was. Sony just made a bunch of mistakes and paid for it. But with that said, these big 3 gaming console makers are so well known and are in so many homes that even if they do poorly here and there, it's ok because they're not going anywhere.
I liked my PS3.
This thread shows cows are not loyal, they jump ship whenever the new popular console is out.
how poorly did it do? what are the relative lifetime sales in the US?
*edit* I just did a search, and - FWIW - VGCharts (yeah I know) has its North America sales at 29.4m That's perhaps not something to write home about, but it appears to be the 6th highest NA home console seller of all time, and that's a figure comparable to the total lifetime sales of the N64 and Genesis. Meh. Not bad considering the absurd pricing and delayed launch

I'm not sure, but surpassed the Xbox 360 when it came to overall sales.

Gen 8 already started by that point so it was pretty moot. PS3 came in 3rd when it mattered sorry to burst that bubble cows
all boils down to launch.
Pretty sure the head of Playstation at the time told people to get 2 jobs to purchase one PS3.
Plus it didn't really have a killer app for it, but once Metal Gear Solid 4 launched things started picking up for the PS3.

There's actually no cited evidence of this of any kind, the last posted sales announcements are spaced extremely far apart, are now extremely old and were extremely close in terms of figures when they were posted.
No one actually knows which console came out on top in the end.

It WAS a disaster at launch. But they did pretty well salvage it by the time the PS3 slim came out, and I believe the price hit $299. That's when I finally got mine, and I bet a ton of people did the same. That was around the time they started dominating in the games department as well compared to Wii and 360. Didn't PS3 even end up passing the 360? Wiki has the 360 slightly ahead, but it's 84 million vs. 83.8 million. A tie. But you factor in the start it had, and that it was on the market basically a full year less, and PS3 must have dominated down the stretch.
Wii was a different animal, it was a fad that sold like gangbusters for about 2 years. But in the last few years of the Wii's lifespan before Wii-U came out, the PS3 dominated Wii, and then PS3 also dominated Wii-U.

Wiki had it 84million 360 vs. 83.8million, I guess those were based on the last "official" numbers. But it seems likely at that pace that the PS3 ended up growing a lead vs. the 360, since the PS3 basically dominated worldwide sales down the stretch run. Of course, when it's that close it could also come down to production - as far as how many units out there as production came to a close.
The Xbox 360 simply had a better start with a much broader appeal to its console; it had a lot of crossover appeal with several foreign demographics to the console market. For instance, the Xbox 360 had a crossover appeal with a lot of PC gaming fans since the Xbox bridged the gap between the console and the PC. In came a bunch of PC-like games such as Halo, as well as ports/iterations from games that originated on the PC. This is why the Xbox and the PC are marketed relatively similarly, and have a similar fanbase. The Xbox and PC both have a lot of goood games, but they both definitely have their share of corny entries as well.

This.
But I still bought one at $600 with Resistance Fall of Man. No regrets.
It was a failure when compared to it's dominant iteration (PS2). However, given the absurd price and and given the 1 year head start the 360 had, it did actually fairly well in the end. Enough so to overtake MS in total sales.
I think the better commentary is MS's lack of ability to maintain a dominant market share given all the advantages they had.
