PS2 Slim was a gimmick. Just like the Pink PS2's and the multi-colored GC's!! CheazieHow is a redesign a gimmick? :|
Especially when it adds extra hardware (network port) and changes the original design so dramatically.
I guess the DS Lite is aswell by that logic.
It was primarily redesigned to appeal to a wider audience and sell more - but that doesent mean its a gimmick.
Multi coloured consoles however - well NOW you have a point.

They added a Network port due to Xbox's getting one for nothing not because of a redesign! They thought they could squeeze abit more money out of the consumer! If you wanted a Network port you could of brought one for £30 instead of wasting £100 on a Slimline PS2! Its just same old thing just new a new package!
Is there any real differance between the DS Lite and the normal DS which makes it a significant overall on the design or is it just a slim lined version of the DS? I'm sure theres no real differance as both do the same thing which is play DS games though one is abit chunkier than the other.
If they was worried about how ugly the PS2 was then they should of done something before they released the console not when it was at death door after 4 years. This is why i think of it as a gimmick.
ding, ding, ding! Exactly! Also reducing the pice and quantity of the components itself, besides all of that.I think a better looking product could help sales ....... and I think with it being lighter and smaller , that might reduce shipping costs for the company.

1st. DW is not supposed to be played like that. That is like a bug, or hack. 2nd. They made the ps2 slim for.... sales. And it seems it worked.kentaro22

Oh and another thing why the PS2 was so chunky when it 1st came out was due to it suppose to have a HDD! They never released one in Europe and the only game which i knew which utilized the HDD on the PS2 was FFXI online.
Look at the back of your old PS2 and you will spot that 50% of that console is hollow.
Hmm.....i guess since they made it, it must not have sold any since it was a useless idea.....OH WAIT.RazMaTaz-1
Yes it was a useless idea but i never said it never sold. My friend brought a silver PS2 as it was silver !! Some people are just plain stupid and will buy anything in a new package.
I just stuck to my old video recorder looking PS2 as it done everything which it was suppose to which was plays game. I dont care if it looked pretty or not because i never looked at it and said "OMG my ps2 looks pretty" as i was too busy playing the games.
Overall yes the slime line PS2 was a gimmick.

You are missing a major point. The slim came out in 04, and the consoles life span has lasted until 2007 (arguable), it was hardly dead at its time of arrival. The Slim boosted the longevity of the console, increase in sales promted more devs to keep supporting the platform. Now for many consumers the slim was a breaking point for buying the console - its redesign was elegant enough to not worry about the console taking up space (personally it was a very important factor at the time), and yes the network card was a breaking point - as I didnt have to buy a fat PS2 and shell out for a network card.
As for the DSL, its redesign is a HUGE difference over the original - as an owner of a Japan launch Phat - only getting a Lite weeks ago - its physical design changes are huge - increasing the handhelds portability massively (it can now actually fit in your pocket), not to mention the screen brightness levels - so you can play it outdoors now, and other simple things like the bigger stylus make it a much more refined elegant product, that is actually portable, rather than an ulgy mess.
