Read the GameSpot review from 1996. The guy talks about how he doesn't like Mario, and then says the game is ****ing amazing for the amount of exploration there is. It's "revolutionary," and there's so much to do. He doesn't pointout a single flaw. Not one. The game should have been a 10. It did so much for its time. The fact that Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid IV got a 10 over it is embarressing. Not only is Super Mario 64 better even by 2009 standards, but the game is from 1996 and is still as awesome as possum.

Another thing: I love Super Mario Galaxy, but how the hell did it beat 64 on GameRankings? 64 was more impressive for its time, even though Galaxy is better now. Galaxy has 78 reviews, and it is still beating 64 by 2 percent, who only has 21 reviews. When Galaxy had 21 reviews, it was beating Ocarina of Time. I just don't get it. Do you guys think game reviewers got more leniant, and stopped hating everything like movie reviewers!?

Anyway, Super Mario 64 should have gotten a 10, in my opinion, especially if those other games got a 10. You can't call it a 9.4 and then not point out any flaws!

No, I read the review, and I swear it didn't. Because Super Mario 64 is better than Uncharted 2 and Halo 3: ODST. In before, "oh so uve plyed tem lolz?"

I got all of them without one, and I was only six at the time. It was my very first video game ever, and I figured out how to do everything all on my own. I may have spent a lot more time than you, though. But I just replayed Super Mario 64 again and beat it, and wow, it is extremely easy. Maybe it's just because I've played it before, but I knew how to get to everything.

Fun fact :

The Director of Mario64 and Creator of the Mario series, Miyamoto wasn't happy with Mario64. He wasn't done, but the game was required to be one of TWO launch titles for the N64, so it was needed in it's current state.

Yes, the N64 only had TWO Launch games to buy the day it came out! Imagine that, imagine SW back then!

Great game, but it's a shame about the time constraint, you probably all noticed that Mario didn't have as many "abilities" in Mario64 as he did in the 2D Mario games.

That was also the LAST Mario game Miyamoto ever directed, he became a producer after directing Zelda OoT.

Well, lately Gamespot has been handing out perfect scores like candy...

But during those days it took a lot for a game to get a perfect score here...

The only N64 game to score perfect as far as I know was Ocarina of Time, which was a heck of a lot awesomer than SM64.

Then all games are 1 thought 9's...which means 9 is the new 10, but since no game can be a 10, that means 1 - 8's, etc, etc.

10 Does not mean perfect.

No Game is perfect, but plenty of games are 10's.

Actually, i kind of agree, still, maybe a 10 would not be that appropiated, having in mind that it was only the beginning of what the console was capable of.

Read the star descriptions before each level. But I honestly could not answer your question. It was so long ago that I can't even remember. I played the living hell out of this game. I probably racked up more than 500 hours. Maybe 1000 or something. I mean, I really played this game, so I eventually found everything on my own.

So it's more that you're the equivelant to 1000 monkeys on 1000 typewriters than that the game is intuitive.

I bought a N64 the day it launched. I love NIN...BUT no game will ever get a 10 on that console "from me anyways" with that horrible controller. Still have my WORKING launch N64.

I see your point, but most review sites use7 as average, not 5.

I consider 5 average, so giving something a 10 is hard, its got to be flawless imo, and no game is.

Well, I didn't even get it till March 20, 1998 (It was my sixth birthday), so I would not have minded at all. But wow, I really hate that! I can understand how it was a smart business move, but it just gets really upsetting when you think what it could have been. Some stars were very similar with maybe a slight change of direction, which could have been a result of the rushing. Some just felt like they were extended segments of stars you aquired earlier.

I also remember hearing that Ocarina of Time was supposed to be a launch title, as well, but the director wasn't satisfied with it, so he continually delayed it. Wow... Imagine what that would have ended up like.

By the way, what was the other launch title? I suddenly forgot.

Name a few other stars that were apparently very hard to find out how to get. I'm drawing a blank here. As a young child, I had no access to the Internet, but still managed to get 120 stars. Not that difficult. Or maybe it was at the time. I forgot.

Yeah, on a 10 point scale, where "5" is average, instead of School-sty.le where 5 is piss poor, that's a solid point. Unfortunately for us, the review system isn't universal. :(

stomping on the chomps pillar to release his chain, or running around a flower garden like 6 times. let me guess you just ran up to a flower garden during the 1000 hours of gameplay and said, hey, im just gonna run around this thing over and over again lets see what happens. lol jk, its not impossible but congrats if u did.

In hindsight, though, is it really worth a 10? Yes, it did things no other game did, but it also ushered in an era that consisted of 3D bastardizations of good 2D platformers.

Stomping on the Chomp's Pillar was pretty obvious. He was attached to something holding him down with a star right across from him. I mean, what else would you have done?

Also, the flower garden thing... Huh? You mean where you run around the pillars until they give you coins? Yeah, my friend told me about that one, but there's no way he looked online when he didn't have Internet and was a young child! I can understand the breaking the pillar block thing being hard to figure out... But what else? Seriously? The worlds aren't that expansive. I also managed to get all the jiggies in Banjo Kazooie without any help at all, but Banjo Tooie is a COMPLETELY different story.

64 had a couple flaws...the most obvious being the camera.

But at the time, there wasn't really anything else.
