Poll Why do consoles want an "early access" system? (14 votes)

So they can improve games 21%
So they can use it as a marketing gimmick to increase game prices 21%
So they can sell a game while avoiding poor reviews from metacritic 57%

My friends, it has been announced, like Sony, Microsoft is now contemplating an "early access" system similar to steam.

Early Access

Do you believe this is to help polish games and make them better? Or something more cynical?

I'm voting for the cynical as **** option.

Consoles are just machines, they don't "want" or need anything.

My friends, I predict, that they have looked at kickstarter and steam, seen a potential revenue strategy and at least 2 years from now, early access for all AAA games, will become the standard marketing strategy to increase the price by $10-$50.

^^^ Take careful note of this highly important post on a gaming forum, it will be right. You (you) will all be complaining about this in the future.

I am glad you are back!

Anyways how is early access gonna increase prices? Usually they are offered for a lot cheaper and the retail version will rise in price. But, the avoidance of a review is pretty spot on.

Sadly this is false. Currently, Elite early access costs $200. Planetary Annihilation had a price of $90.

This is a cheap, seedy business practice, and thus, absolutely perfect for consoles. It seems perfectly clear, they have looked at this and said "I wants somes of thats shits".

Aside from mentioned above, metacritic directly influenced sales and thus directly influences sales (by directly influencing sales). By directly selling a hyped potential million seller under the guise of "early access" they avoid potential sale damage.

It will just give third parties like EA more reason to release unfinished crap and get people to pay to test their games for them.

It is bad-to-okay on PC. It'll just be horrible on consoles.

If you don't want to play early access games, then don't buy them. I am sick of hearing people bitch about some early access game being buggy. Yeah, of course it's fucking buggy! You bought an alpha! They labelled it an alpha. They didn't hide it, so quit bitching. You SHOULD be bitching when a developer releases a full game that broken as hell like BF4; if they had marketed BF4 under early access or something, I wouldn't have had an issue.

I usually don't read his posts because he just throws words together in a pathetic attempt to sound intelligent, usually sounding beyond stupid in the process. After reading a few of the posts I see stupidity is but one of his many faults.

It's a mix of the lack of criticism and other factors.

Early Access sells. It's the temptation of exclusivity of playing a game on-demand before release. It taps into the curiosity of a concept/product that has attained very little criticism. And it exploits the idealistic nature of the vocal and argumentative gaming community trying to invoke change towards a videogame.

I would not have wasted $20 on the PC version of minecraft had I known a PS3 version would exist someday. I will not fall for the hype and wait next time. Early access blows.

It's the new trendy and slightly edgy thing to do these says, if you don't have early access you are not cool.

It's the same question as 'Why do all gamers want more games'

And if you think that to be a mystery, than the joke's on you.

"Why do console gamers want to play Fortnite ?" "Why do console gamers want to play DayZ ?"

You seriously can't answer those questions ?

I know, right? Who the heck wants to spend 500 bucks for early access to a console with bad games?

Oh, snap

I guess we all do one day. Until you realize that you pay a premium and have barely any games to play when you buy a console at launch.

I'm way behind the times, don't know what an "early access system" even is. But it sounds like more PC gaming trash like F2P games.

Hmmmm....I don't know....one of the things I like about my videogames, is those months of anticipation leading up to the release day, that moment when you finally get to play the game you've been thinking about all this time .....it's somewhat of a ritual for me and this early access thing would ruin it. These days we are lucky when we get a fully working game with no major bugs or issues on day 1, I don't think I'd like to see most games in a prior unfinished state.

Perhaps it would work for some type of games more than others, and I guess if there is a market for it and lots of people participate it could help to iron out more bugs prior to release......don't think it would be my thing but if there is a market out there for it I say let those people get what they want.

Early Access is a scam and Consoles should stay far away from this stupid idea.

And if anyone is interested I have a half finished book I've written. You can pay to read half of it now and I'll send you unedited pages every few months.
