The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is one of the biggest and longest games out there. It has well over 100+ hours of content. Yet it fits on a DVD9...

Heres the cool part, not only does it fit on a DVD9. It doesn't even take up half of the space. It's little more than 4 gigs.. 4.01 to be exact.

With so much voice acting, yet the game is only 4 gigs. Are games really going to be well over 9 gigs anytime soon? Well, they would if

1) They have over 2 hours of CGI movies

2) Uncompressed sound

But with the fact that compressing sound making load times shorter, and the fact that games nowadays games look so good that you don't need CGI movies, why do you need Blu-Ray? Theres only one answer.

For movies, not for games.

Except for the HD movies. You can never fit a HD movie into a CD. Also DVD players is only 480p. So no not the same because you can never watch a HD movie on a HD TV on a CD. Or even on the computer (just a trailer). You can't deny it is not sweet to watch a HD movie.

there is a huge difference one youve seen a hd movie u and go back to dvd movies u start realizing how crappy dvds look ..... and lol at vcd movies

also there is one thing that u need blu ray for and its uncompressed pcm sound that only could take around 9 gigs worth of space

Oblvion was super huge and aweseom.

But I know it was desinged with DVD limit from the beginning so it isn't a good example, especially since it is a nigh launch game.

Blu-ray would be nice to have but it isnt necessary but rather a necessity there is no need for all this new format crap because I actually just started buying DVD's about 7 years ago because I had to replace my VHS collection I wonder how many times and how much money I'm going to waste to keep up if I want to watch a movie I'll just go to the theatre and watch it I dont need to keep upgrading my electronics if I do happen to upgrade to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray then thats it for me I wont do it no more.

First off... no I don't need BluRay, but seriously, I'm glad I have it. I love HD movies, they're amazing. And with the PS3 I can get those cheaper than with a stand alone. I also have the HD-DVD for the 360, between the two of them, I can get any movie in HD I want over the next few years. No waiting for a victor. I would have prefered the HD-DVD in the 360, as it's a clunky set up as an external, compared to my PS3.

As for Oblivion, mostly that game reuses alot of textures and objects and character/enemy models. Still amazing, but not the best example of how big a game can be. If you created a sports game, with each player, not just the stars, in full detail, that would add up fast.

The point is, while DVD9 may be enough for right now, in 3 years time it may not. Multiple DVD's are fine with my, but there's something to be said for a nice all-in-one package. It's one unit, one disc. So do you need BD? No, sames as the sheep will tell you, you don't need HD, but it's a nice feature and I'd rather have it then not.

I'm aware it's just a trojan horse to help BD win the market, but guess what? I don't care, BD's cost the same as HD DVDs, and the horse itself is pretty damn cool.

You asked a question then when someone told you the answer....You comeback is because it has 2 hours of CGI??

The fact is he 4 games... All of which would only take 1 BlueRay and has more games get made for the PS3 then ported the number of DVDs to keep up with the BlueRay will keep going up

LOL. Ill give you my PS3 and 360 if you can get 1 cd to play a full length 1080p HD movie.

And yes, blu ray movies are sweet to watch. Its like going from VHS to DVD. Its like night and day. I refuse to watch dvds anymore. I only buy blu ray movies now. Once you go HD, you never go back.

So now that you have made this boring thread (like we haven't seen enough of these threads) , do you think all of the sudden Blu ray is going to vanish, well sir it isn't going anywhere so just deal with it and move on!!!

Who said anything about 'needing' it.

It's just a format, games will run on Blu Ray if it's 8 gigs or 15 gigs. I don't care what techniques are used to make it work. I don't care about duplicated data, or filler data to push other data the edge. Why should you care about it? Did you break a sweat and come to tears personally while trying to figure out how to get the data onto the disc the best way possible?

Of course not, so quit whining about it. This is Sony we're talking about, whoever said they make things that you 'need'. I want Blu-Ray because movies in high definition are off the chain...See you soon Universal...

I like high def movies and don't feel like spending 1000 dollars on a player.

I'm also a gamer. By combining both features in a neat, sleek package and subsidizing the cost, Sony has made Sherp a very happy cow.

I would love to do but I only got a X360 and it looks like HD-DVD is losing so I don't want to waste $200. And I hear it is not all that good when you only have component and no dvi or hdmi cables.

AndreIssa: How much space does the game take up on the Blue Ray Disk? I am assuming it is on a 25 GB disc right?
bANGERnomics: To AndreIssa We use most of it, about 18GB if I remember correctly (and everything on the disk is actualy compressed at a 2:1 ratio too as the CELL is so powerful, that it can decompress the data faster than it can read it.

To answer the original question (although I'm not a cow)....eventually. I can remember people stating that CD-Rom drives for games was overkill and it's just space for music (back in the 3.5/5.25 floppy days.) that a game could never need 700MB. Well CDs got filled. Then people said the same for DVDs. That DVDs were a waste and unless you pack the disk with video, they were unneeded. They are needed now. Now we have Blue Ray. Yes, so far there hasn't been a title that NEEDS 50GB. But there will be, it's inevitable. The real question is: Will we need that size media during the current gen's lifetime?....I've no idea.

[QUOTE="chansaet"]Its not that they need it. Its that they want it. It must be pretty sweet watching those blu ray movies.The_Nemacyst
It is the same as watching that on a CD. It's just storage.

That just shows how little you know about it. BluRay is an HD format. HD content takes up far more space than a movie on DVD would (I'm assuming you meant DVD, not CD.)You won't get HD movies on regular dvd's. Also, there are a lot of PS3 games that will take up more than 9GB's of space. Kojima is already saying he wants more space.

Give me a link.Or you bullcraping me.

Link

 It's 11.79GB. There are 4 PS3 games that require 10+GB There rest are 7GB and under (Some under 4GB). I posted a picture of these files but apparently my source was a ToS violation under "illegal activities".

Where did you get 11.79GB from? The devs said 18gb already compressed at a 2:1 ratio. Thats about 36 gb...

Sigh... as I said the image I posted was deleted by admin.

I'll post another one where I've, hopefully, deleted everything "illegal".

Mods feel free to delete this if it's agains ToS.

I can't name the source because that is in direct conflict with the ToS.

Yea... uhm, whats a more credible source? info from the devs mouth or some torrent file..

Rhetorical question? If I could link you to the actual file and show you that it's 11.79GB untouched you would deny it because "the dev said it was 18GB"? People say things to sell ****. Money talks, and bull* runs a marathon.

[QUOTE="The_Nemacyst"][QUOTE="AvatarAko"]buh buh buh 9GB's is plenty  Blue dragom (3 dvds) Mass Effect (2 dvds) Halo 3 ( 4 dvds) GTAIV (2 DVD's)

Blue Dragon took so many Dvds because it had over 2 hours of CGI movies.

So, 360 gamers can play there cool games with no movies while the ps3 gamers can play a real game

I have quite a bit of "HD content" on DVD. No "special" features or anything just basic content but it's HD and fits on a DVD.

Oblivion is also compressed on the 360, if you were to uncompress everything, it would take up more space. Also PC games use hardware differently from consoles. Blu Ray is better then being stuck with the mediocre basic HD-DVD which is only 15 GB's, sheesh Motorstorm is at least that if not more and thats because everything is uncompressed and there is much more detail then Oblivion. Not to mention if you compare the detail and textures of the PS3 version of Oblivion with the 360's its pretty obvious that the game will be bigger in size.

Is there a link to back any of this (other than Blue Dragon) up?
