Why do game systems need to tell you what they are?

The hardware makers either out of vanity or habit, have to throw their name up there in lights when it's superfluous at best.

They always incorporate a screen telling you what system it is which has seemed to be a staple in gaming systems since 1995. Even though the Wii doesn't do this when booting up the system or a game, it does when going to the Wii store....you get the word "Wii" across your screen in big letters. Thank God they told me because what if I accidentally logged onto the PSN store by mistake.

Why do they feel the need to tell me what system it is yet AGAIN? If you haven't gotten it yet from the box art and the name on the console, then you should be beaten to death with the thing.

It's just a marketing strategy to increase brand recognition and whatnot.

Do you have to be reminded what system you're playing all the time? When you boot up MGS4, do you need the positive reinforcement that you are playing it on a PS3?

Its not reminding you what system you're playing, its familiarizing you with the brand/logo.

It's the repetition. Every time you turn on your system, you immediately associate the sound and visual with said console. The one with the coolest boot-up screen is immediately the one you're a blind fanboy of. It's just like comparing penis sizes.

Their insecure pieces of technology with inferiority complexes.

They need to boast their name so they don't cry to their virtual teddies they produce when they get turned off. =/

You could easily ask why the windows logo (by default) acts as the loading screen for windows. Or why there are brand logo's on the inside of your car.

I believe it is, as other's have said, to familiarize people to the brand logo. Also, it's not a big deal (or a deal at all). This is the first time i've ever heard someone bring this up as a discussion. Not because its a deep subject, but because most people don't really care.

Loading screen or marketing reasons perhaps?I don't like seeing Windows XP all the time but I need something to look at while my PC's booting up.
