Sony's done it, Nintendo seems poised to, and it's not exactly rocket science.  Sign on some advertising companies, place ads on the 360 dashboard for them (know those soundwave placeholders on the 360 dashboard?  Put a coke bottle there), offer advertisement downloads, have those companies pay you for the service, and you're done.  The more the advertisers, the better.  Then, do some online advertising and it's all good.

How would they pull it off without ripping off people who are already activated on gold accounts?  They would have to make it so it becomes free after the last person to active their gold account ends their year, and that would leave a lot of people online-less for a full year.  That would suck.

Refunds, or transfer the remaining balance into MS points?

basically they announced that Live Anywhere might not be charging a fee and that they wont make xbox 360 fans feel ripped off- my theory is theyll start partnerships with other companies as they are starting to do just recently

That would make the most sense: nobody feels ripped off, the money stays in MS' hands.
