Why do PC Gamers give DOOM credit for inventing FPS?

First FPS I played was Wolfenstein. Of course ROTT and Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold were hot back then too. Well, maybe not. On Amiga 2000 in the late 80s there was Rescue: The Embassy. You started in 3rd-person, but then it moved to FPS. Too real for back then. Used to scare the crap outta me.
