I was on a forum the other day and there were people there bad mouthing on Bayonetta because they thought the cut scenes were too long. What is up with people I hear it from a lot of people this gen (especially sheep) and I just don't get it. The cut scenes in Bayonetta are fantastic. They are great looking and flesh out the already confusing plot. I really like how good they looked and how over the top it made the game.

To me cut scenes have always been a reward. You play for a while you beat a level and you are rewarded with cut scenes in super high quality cgi.... It was like that since the PS1 and it has always made me happy to see them in games the longer and flasheir the better. This gen comes around and people are bashing cut scenes all the time. I loved Diablo2 when you beat a act you got treated to a long super cool cgi cutscene. They flesh out the story. All Metal Gear games were so cool because of it. And MGS1, Resident evil, and FF7 pretty much started the trend, I loved those games back then and still do. So many other people did to , but now people bash any game that has them. Does a game have to be all gameplay to be good? Hell No. Games can be about story and art people, some of us like that stuff.

Do you haters all just want to play a game where the person just talks in game while you play? To me that would suck! you need a little down time to break up the pace. I love cut scenes and it seemed like every one else did to the last two console gens...but this gen they get bashed! Why? Opinions?

Most developers use cut scenes because they are to lazy or not imaginative enough to tell a story through gameplay in the game. Japanesse devs way over use cut scenes.

True for some games, but not all. Sometimes you see a cutscene and wish you could play it.

That is true also. I am plating DMC 4 now because it was cheap and on sale at Gamestop. Anyways there are cutscenes where there is a bunch of fighting and I just keep thinking to myself I would rather do the fighting then watch it.

Most people hate cut scenes because the voice actors are usually pretty bad and they can be pretty boring. I found myself smashing my controller to bits every time I played an MGS game (not to say I didn't like the games...I just didn't like the LONG cutscenes).

Why? Because they like a game that has in game cutscenes, and they don't play games enough to realize it depends on the individual game. Cutscenes are good imo, but it really depends on the individual game.

Key word: little.

I haven't played MGS4, but from what I've heard, one cutscene lasts forty-five minutes. Forty. Five. Minutes. It's one thing to "break up the pace." It's another thing to cram in half a movie in one cutscene.

As far as I'm aware, MGS4 is the only game that gets criticized for its cutscenes. Not sure where you're finding all of this general cutscene hate.

BioWare manages to have great stories in their games without having massive unskippable cut scenes.

I have no idea, cut scenes are how a story is told in a game. MGS4 would not have been as fantastic as it was without the cut scene story telling.

If the only way you want stories in games is to watch cut scenes then why not just watch movies instead?

Movies don't have the benefit of being as long as movies, aren't interactive like movies, don't allow you to set the pace, much of the story in games consists of actual gameplay, etc.

Cutscenes are a reasonable way to tell story in a game.

I have no issue with cinematics so long as they're not longer than 10 minutes. I want to play my games, not watch a movie.

Bayonetta's story telling cutscenes were just terrible to me, because they were confusing (In other threads I've already stated I stopped playing and returned my rental therefor still don't understand WTF Bayonetta is about, or any of the other characters)

MGS4 was bad after the 2nd or 3rd time playing through, because I already saw them but some of them I still watched because it was interesting. The first time they were amazing to watch. The story part of the cutscenes wern't bad because I already had a grasp on the MGS story.

I like cutscenes as long as they aren't too long, MGS4 pushed the limit on numerous occasions lol. Including cutscenes can really add to the experience and allow the developer to do things that wouldn't work so well in-game. Since you mentioned Diablo II, remember the Act III cutscene when the Wanderer transforms into Diablo and the Prime Evils open up the portal to hell? That scene wouldn't be anywhere near as epic as it was if it was done in-game.

because of the massive ADD gamers have developed. Pretty soon your health will regenerate instantly because waiting behind cover for 3 seconds is too long and takes so much from the experience. Then everyone will complain at 2hr long games.

lol, I'm glad they switched from health packs to regenerating health. I recently started playing Battlefield 1942 again and it's a pain in the butt to be on low health and have to search in vain for the nearest health pack. It really breaks up the action.

I actually like the cut scenes in games, althoughI could probably do without the extra long ones. I think that's where you get most of your story from, and I'm sure it was harder for devs to help tell the story with gameplay back in the Saturn andPS1 era, so along came CGI cut scenes. Some of my fondest memories in gaming were the cut scenes from the original Resident Evil. My kids on the other hand, always skip the cut scenes, and I tell them they might miss something in the story by skipping, but they still won't bother. With them its straight to the action! I say keep cut scenes, but don't overkill them bymaking them too long, andkeeping you away from the action.

i dont mind short cut scenes...but i really cant stand long ones. i want to play a game...not watch it. if a dev is making a game with lots of long cutscenes then perhaps they should consider making a movie instead...clearly there not happy making a game. 1-2 mins a piece should be the max (except for the end maybe) and they should be used sparingly during the game.

I like a nice cutscene, but they shouldn't be too long, and there shouldn't be loads of them. If i spend more time watching cutscenes than playing the game then thats a poor show if you ask me.

If the only way you want stories in games is to watch cut scenes then why not just watch movies instead?

Because I love to play games, and some of my favorite experiences as a gamer have been games where I care about the characters. Those games where I care about characters had cutscenes in the. Games like Bioshock or Half-Life left me disappointed in the narrative simply because sometimes when I was listening to a recording I was also fighting some Splicer in Bioshock. I am not saying the way those games tell their stories are terrible, but it is not my taste.

And that is one reason why cutscenes should remain in many video games. There is an audience that likes it.

Also, camera angles and background music are a way for the director or game developers to show what needs to be shown and in a game like Kingdom Hearts, for example, cutscenes help that greatly.

There are many reasons developers use cutscenes over in-game storytelling, and I would bet money that laziness in not one of those reasons for many developers.

I like a nice cutscene, but they shouldn't be too long, and there shouldn't be loads of them. If i spend more time watching cutscenes than playing the game then thats a poor show if you ask me.

Snagal123

I do agree with this. As much as I loved MGS4 and while there was more gameplay than cutscenes, I felt that some of them dragged on too long, much like others have felt. It was needed so we knew what was happening, but it was a lot.

I don't mind cutscenes, unless they suck. I really can't criticize MGS4 for long cutscenes, as the game has so much vital info it's impossible to turn all of it into gameplay, and they were well written and entertaining to watch. If you don't like them, just them and stop whining.

Because playing a game, if much better than watching a game. Now that devs have the ability to get rid of cut scenes there really isn't any room for them in my gaming world. Then again I rarely play games for story, seeing how almost all games have horrible story telling.

Well placed cut scenes at epic moments in games = greatness. Cut scenes around every other turn = cheesy movie.

I'm pretty sure the people who LOVE cutscenes are the ones with ADD. Because they find it boring to stand around listening to Alyx or they find it boring to scan objects in Metroid Prime to discover the story themselves.

Neither party has said one way of telling the story is more boring than the other except for the longer cutscenes. And boredom is not the reason I prefer cinematics over a full in-game narrative and I could only assume I'm not the only one with this view.

I don't mind cutscenes at all, as long as I'm given the option to skip them. There are times where I would rather not watch, or times where I've died just after the cutscene and I don't want to waste the time looking at it again.

Its not a lazy add on to the game. If it was they wouldnt make them look so appealing and put so much detail into the programming of it with all the action or motion capture. Its a creative touch some devs love to express their games with and some gamers except it while others wish they didnt have to watch them or would simply want to play them.

Games, on the other hand simply for the most part havent been able to re-create the things you see when it comes to those action cutscenes. The tech just isnt there yet. So, cutscenes, in action style are made. They are also there to advance the story. Again though, love it or hate it, if you dont like it. skip it. Watch what you think is most of it to get the idea of the story then proceed. I except them, but only because I grew up loving mgs from the very beginning. If not for growing onto that series, I think I'd be in the same dilema as some gamers who'd rather shoot themselves on hour long scenes :P

But what kind of story does Metroid Prime tell? Could most other games employ that kind of storytelling? Probably not. Final Fantasy XIII for example, needs cutscenes. But it also has an autoclip for you to read that supplements the story.

I like cut scenes when they help along the story. I just can't see 20 minute cut scenes. That's right Metal Gear Solid I'm looking at you. Especially 20 minute cut scenes that tell me why I can't fire a gun I pick up off an enemy. Something that could be explained in 30 seconds..the gun is bio engineered to only work for the original owner...see now was that hard?

I also hate Quick Time Event cutscenes. I usually use cutscenes to put down the controller and relax a bit and enjoy the story. I don't want to have to hit some stupid series of buttons to move the story along during a cut scene. Other than that most cut scenes are good.

some people just HATE storylines and character development.
