Lots of posters also try to pass the franchise off as casual, wtf? This years game is deep with lots of play modes, and a very deep, complex control system, so why the casual label? I'm aware that some Madden players are bandwagon jumpers, you know the type, the people that go out and buy Super Bowl champs gear every year, but some of us actually love the NFL and devote lots of time playing this game.

What makes this or any complex controlled sports game any less hardcore than say the average fps with three buttons: jump, shoot, and grab? Or any other game for that matter?

It's buggy as s---, other than that it's pretty cool.

bez2083

Most games are buggy, have you played Oblivion or GTA IV?

That's not my point, the series is generally hated on bigtime and called casual quite often. I'm wondering what those people that call it casual, think is a hardcore game?

Is it sports haters in general saying this, or is it a valid argument?

I don't know about "people" but my particular beef is that ESPN 2K5 stomped madden into the ground in sales and quality and instead of making a better game they bought the rights to the NFL and cranked out 3 years of crappy Madden titles in a row.

Madden 09 - 86% at Gamrankings

Doesn't sound like a waste of 60 bucks a lot of people here say it is...also why hate on the fact it sold millions of copies so far? It rated a "GREAT" game.

I don't hate on it, nor do I even believe in "casual games", to me there are only good games and bad games. BUT, there's no denying that a lot of those who buy Madden every year are casual gamers who would buy it whether it's good or bad.

The "hate" is more generally directed towards EA and releasing a new game every year with minimal upgrades and charging $60 for it.

Oblivion and GTAIV aren't "most games." Most quality games, like those released by VALVe, are not buggy and released only after they have had most of their bugs worked out. Releasing a game with a lot of bugs is general laziness on the developers part.

They barely try to upgrade their games or change it around. The same is true for almost all of their sports games.

Heck we've got to the stage now whereby they could just release a content pack every year for $10, with upgraded teams and jerseys etc, and there would be no difference between the content upgrade and a new full game.

But greed gets the better of them each time.

The only thing i hate about Madden is it's preventing other companies from making NFL Football games. I'd like to have the option to choose from 2-3 other football games besides Madden. It sucks.

That makes sense, but it's not EAs fault if people keep eating it up. I wouldn't buy a new Madden every year either, last NFL game I owned was NFL 2K5.

Agreed. That's why we see these generic football games floating around. The NFL 2K franchise was much better than Madden imo.

When has sports gaming not had yearly releases though? Even going back to the Genesis, those basketball and sports games came out every year. People act like yearly sports games is some new concept thats was only invented in the past 2 years.

Even NBA Jam had yearly releases and that game isn't even a sim.

At least in the middle years (late '90's to early 00's) each release had a significant upgrade to either it's graphics and/or gameplay. Most Maddens over the past couple years have been criticized for doing very little, if anything, new and not taking full advantage of what they did well.

Outside of the year where they jumped from 2D to 3D, there weren't significant upgrades in graphics or gameplay. Its always been one or two new features. Then the next year they (they as in everyone) copy what the competition did and add in one or two new features.

Where are these same people when yet another FPS thats the same as all the others is released?

Sports games and RPGs are the only genres that get bashed because every game doesn't completely re-invent the genre.

Of course I haven't, I prefer to actually play the sports themselves. I get my information from places like Gamespot who have criticized recent releases for doing very little compared to those several years ago.

You must think people that play sports game dont play sport, play someone that dont know football, then play someone that dose know football. People that know the real game are better at if.

And for your comment, until you played the game, you really have no room to comment!

I don't really hate the series, but I don't like it either. Then again, I'm not really into sports games in general. I love to play soccer, but I haven't found myself enjoying even a soccer video game, so its not that I don't like sports.

That being said, I've tried playing a lot of sports games but just really couldn't get into any of them. Just personal preference, I guess.

How can a game be casual when every year EA Sports holds The Madden Challenge (a tournament that is BIGGER then any other video game tournament) in X amount of cities. IMO, It doesnt get more "hardcore" than Madden and there is no FPS that can touch Madden. Madden is the most competitive game out there. Name 2 game that can draw a crowd like Madden can.

Smash and Halo Tournaments are not as big as the Madden Challenge which spans the entire nation in multiple cities. The only game I can think of that has a bigger competitive scene then Madden is Starcraft in Korea. Because lets be serious its a sport over there. Madden has evolved into more then a game. Its American Culture.

I forgot about StarCraft. In all fairness I, obviously, haven't been to the Madden Challenge but I have been to SSBM tournaments that were international. It was part of MLG after all. Halo, I don't personally know but I hear of tournaments for it all the time.

At any rate, he asked a question and I answered.

It has an immense casual appeal, but as with anything it can be hardcore.

I dislike sports games because I find them boring, I need motivation to play and with sports games I don't see any. Plus, it certainly is buggy and it seems the yearly enhancements aren't worth the $60 every year. If I was really into the sport and liked to compete with my friends who were really into it, then I can understand why someone would enjoy it.

Madden games are good for people who are hardcore football fans. If you are familier with the teams, formations, blitz packages, the routes, madden can be very complex. However I can see somebody that is a hardcore gamer but not into football not get that much out of it. I happen to be a big football fan so I make sure I pick up Madden once or twice a generation.

So yeah, Madden is for hardcore football fans, not necessarily hardcore gamers.

Holy... I'm surprised to see someone else actually knowing that. It's kind of funny too.. if people actually bothered to lay all the hate and blame at the feet of the NFL instead of EA over the last couple years, they would have actually had a chance at the NFL deciding to ditch license exclusivity (a slim one, but a chance). Instead, they directed ALL of the anger at the wrong person and killed the chance.

That's due to EA deciding on Gamespy. Gamespy's servers are atrocious and it's not just Madden that has those issues.

I don't know about "people" but my particular beef is that ESPN 2K5 stomped madden into the ground in sales and quality and instead of making a better game they bought the rights to the NFL and cranked out 3 years of crappy Madden titles in a row.

what he said. competition breeds excellence. without competitors, madden will continue to be the same lousy game every year. this is the first year i havent bought madden and i dont plan on ever buying it again unless ea loses the exclusive nfl license

Then don't play Madden and while you're at it don't play ESPN 2k Baseball.

Funny,Take Two did the same to MLB, and now MLB 2K series is just garbage, even though MVP Baseball was the superior gam.

I'm the exact same. I just don't understand why anyone would pick up every Madden though, year after year at full price. And as others have said it should be an expansion pack with updated rosters and the few new bells and whistles @ maybe ten or twenty bucks at most.

Who cares, it's more than clear that the games have alot of fans who will enjoy the games, let the haters moan why the fans have some fun.
