No one is forcing you to pay for it. It's a service and if you don't want to pay for it, just use Xbox Live Silver and Xbox Connect. There you go: free online so stop complaining.

So we can iplease stop tacking on the cost of Xbox Live to the "real" cost of a 360?

They tack it on because you can't play MP with a Silver account.

And that's a service you get for free from all other platforms.

Silver is free online, but you can't play online multiplayer which is what people talk about. Anyway, the cost doesn't affect me.

Because they want to keep pushing on extra things in an effor to make the 360 look more expensive then the PS3 even though the PS3 uses a lot more energy then the 360 more then enough to actually negate the cost of XBL in itself. The difference in power consumption cost between the 360 and the PS3 is more then the cost of XBL so I fail to see why people complain about XBL on the principal that it makes it more expensive then the PS3.

I just complain about XBL because I want it to be free not because it makes it more expensive then PS3 in the long run because as I have proven time in and time out along with Dreams that is not true.

Although I don't agree with it, it's a legitimate gripe. I just happen to that I enjoy XLB's feature set enough that paying for it doesn't bother me.

No thats not it, you can't do everything with silver and Xbox connect, as you can with the gold and people are starting to realize that, although the experience may be different, the features are still the same on both XBL and PSN so alot of people are disgruntled that Microsoft charges for the so called privilege of there online service, while PC online gaming is free, PS3 online gaming is free, and Nintendo such as it is, offers there service for free. So why is it after purchasing a couple hundred on a console and then endless amounts of cash on 360 games, why do people have to pay for features they can get else where for free, it's not fair to any 360 owner.

Answer to your question:

Because it is a rip off and is one of the reasons I don't play my 360 anymore, got tired of paying for what I can do on my PC for free.

Why do lemmings keep downplaying the cost of Live? It's a game console, it should come with free online gaming, they should charge for extra features, not for GAMING. I've been trying to play forza 2 online for weeks and their is hardly anyone playing that game, if online were free it would probably be a lot easier to find games. Xbox Live is great but it's not worth the money imo, I mean I'll keep paying cause I NEED online to satisfy my gaming needs, but I'd let them throw a bunch of Live's features out the window to have the service be free.

PSN is great, it's free, it works, first/second party games often have dedicated server support, it's only downside is it isn't as unified, but I wouldn't pay 50 bucks a year for that.

Please read my post and use your reading comprehension skills to the best of your abilities next time. I said that you didn't have to pay for it and there are alternatives to playing a game online with the 360.

Comprehension skills? You asked why people bring it up and I told you why. Because you are already paying your cable company for the online service so why should you have to pay microsoft?

$50+4 years of xbL= $200, no other way around it. Thats why its brought up, it is a extra cost that isn't associated with playing online with either the ps3 or the wii. And if I'm worried about the power consumption, then I shouldn't have gotten that refridgerator with the water in the door either lol. I've played pc games online for about 15 years with no charge except for league race servers for Nascar Racing 2003, so why would I want to pay for online gaming on a console, especially when I can meet my friends online, we can play together and we can chat together while doing so. So I'll save that $50 a year for a extra game I might not have gotten before but since yall have reminded me that I'm saving $50 a year I guess I'll go and pick up Far Cry 2 now lol.

I understand that xbL may be cool and all, just not enough for me to have to worry about paying a bill to play online besides my internet bill.

Maybe it's me, but when i had my 360 i was never able to play online, just by having a gamertag or a connection, you had to pay for the Live service, so has something changed and i don't know about it ? because even if it has then playing online is not , by any means the only feature offered by these services.

Now i had a 360 as recently as the Gears 2 release and the new dashboard download, which killed my 360, but i can tell you that i've used both services XBL and PSN, and whether you believe it or not i have not noticed one difference between the 2 and i certainly haven't seen why you should pay $50.00 for one over the other.

1) Xbox live $50 dollars a year.

2) To play PC games you have to have Internet service so thats anywhere from $45 dollars on up a month plus other gaming fees like to play WoW you have to pay a $13 dollar fee a month so thats $58 bucks a month to play a game while on-line, but most other games don't have that so it is around the $45 dollar mark.

3) The PS3 is connected to the internet monthly fee as well

He talking about a 3rd party service that allows you to hook up your 360 to your PC and play online for free, it is not XBL. Not many people use it because it sucks.

If there was a middle ground for the online service where you don't get all the extra stuff and just be able to play the non-dedicated server games w/o the cross game invites/chat I would be happy.

If you play games like GTA4, CoD4, RB/GH online with gold you are handing money to MS for nothing IMO.

You can say it ain't much, and that's fine, but don't try to justify the cost... you just simply have no other option.

1. Xbox is $50/year, not month. 2. You realize you have to pay an internet bill to play your xbox too, right? 3. PS3 is free AND has dedicated servers, unlike xbox which makes you pay and play on craptastic client side servers.

1) Xbox live $50 dollars a month.

2) To play PC games you have to have Internet service so thats anywhere from $45 dollars on up a month plus other gaming fees like to play WoW you have to pay a $40 dollar fee a month so thats $85 bucks a month to play a game while on-line, but most other games don't have that so it is around the $45 dollar mark.

3) The PS3 only has that one thing "free online" as an advantage over the other platforms but you can also tell it's free. Live to me is way better.

1. Xbox is $50/year, not month. 2. You realize you have to pay an internet bill to play your xbox too, right? 3. PS3 is free AND has dedicated servers, unlike xbox which makes you pay and play on craptastic client side servers.

Um.. you gotta pay for internet for the PS3 too... sheesh.

To be fair only a few PSN games use dedicated servers.

Don't forget that you have to pay in order to be able to get certain achievements that require you to play online (unless you steal the service by using countless trials), which is absolutely free on PSN. :D

Not to mention that you pay so much for laggy game in even the biggest titles for the 360 (looking at you Gears), while PS3's biggest titles such as R2 have extremely minimum to no lag at all for FREE!!!!!

You can't beat a free service that works in your favor. :)
