Therye always so linear and dull.

Here's the outline of nearly every JRPG ever.

Hi I'm a super powered nobody with a dark past, and I barely talk to anyone because I am so mysterious. Oh noes, my world is changing and though I did not care before, believe it or not, fate has called one me to save the world. Wow what a crazy bunch of friends I have encountered, there's love intrest one, who everybody loves, and love intrest two who is my best friend and secretly loves me. There's angry big guy #1, sleak skinny guy/girl who uses fists and a bunch of fluff characters I will never use in my over used turn-based combat. On noes evil villian, what are you trying to do !amazingly I am part of your master plan somehow!

Insert random mini games.
Insert mindless gophering

Omg Wee won how awesome! It only too 10 hours of gameplay and 80 hours of CG. WHAT A MASTERPIECE!

Looks like the world is saved...OR IS IT??!??!?!?!one one oen question mark oen!111

the stories are generic as in every story has something similar to another but, so is every story in a same genre in Hollywood. there is very little space for a completely original story now. if only they would allow you to be poor guy who becomes a warlord who is trying to conquer a country, and does so by traitourous deeds. and not i betray you and you are sad hahaha kind of deeds. i mean, you literally backstab nearly all your allies, you use everybody as your pawns.. so on so on. kinda like a RTS except in an RPG story. and i want to be the guy with the huge weak armies and dull AI that are supposed to randomly surprise the enemy for once.

It's not the story it's the way the story is told, everyone knows there will always be a bad guy and a good guy, the bad guy 99% of the time will try to do something that offends the good guy (Destroy the world, detstory his city, become a god whatever) it's the way it's told.

FFXII isn't really linear at all.

The only FF that was really linear to me was FFX, which is probably why I didn't love it.

perhaps if the good guy was more open minded, he wouldn't mind the bad guy becoming one of those. good guys these days. cant allow any bad guy to have any bit of fun. i mean, its just one hometown. im sure theres pleanty more out there waiting to be discovered.

Beat me to it. Why do people classify JRPGs as only turned based. Ever played ToS?

There is also Star Ocean that has a great battle system, Radiata Stories also doesn't have a turn based one.

i never like star ocean, maybe its just me (probably is) but it didnt interest me and the fighting was kinda clunky for me. i prefer TOS a lot more. maybe its cause im not a heavy RPG gamer.well, star ocean did score lower than ToS and i think its cause of battle system. o well, i sold it. and now i tried to play Tales of the abyss but i got stuck with no items, had to start over, and the loading time and sometimes lag is drivng me insane so now im playing my wii and 360

EDIT: actually i liked star ocean. i just got caught up in my frustration. i like it but its not that great though. didnt take the time to beat it even with a strategy guide

Oh wait, oh wait you have.. From your profile blog. This new video chronicles Final Fantasies 7 - 10. I think it's pretty good, but I still like my MGS4 video the best. I was a little iffy about this one because I barely - played - FF9 (didn't like it too much)

I know what I like. I like my men big, strong, & burly. I like my women slender, curvy, and natural. I like guns. I like characters who smoke cigarette's. I like blood & guts. I like any character whose in the military. I want my characters to drink coffee, not tea. And damn it, just seeing Old Glory flying high against the wind brings a tear to my eye. And thats the only plot device that can bring an emotional response out of me. So keep the stories simple, I don't need anything "sissy" challenging my manliness.

Actually the outline for JRPGS is:

I'm a teenage male who lives in a (1) small village or (2) huge city. I am poor to moderately wealthy. I have a female childhood friend and (1) male childhood friend or (2) none. My village/city is (1)attacked or (2) threatened to be attacked. I step up and go out on a long journey to defeat these law breakers and (1) save my female childhood friend who they kidnapped (2) protect my female childhood friend. I meet either 2, 4 or 6 other characters who are willing to help me. While traveling, cliche plot advancements are made to imply couples between me and my childhood friend as well as characters a, b, c, d who joined me. While fighting the last boss, I find out (1) He is somehow related to my family tree (2) he is somehow related to my female childhood friend. I beat the final boss, and the world is forever changed/saved.

Finally teh truth. Still, some JRPGs have some nice stories. Xenosaga had a really nice one going for it until episode III came out. Bad things happen when you change a game that was supposed to be five parts to only three.

Hell, look at Xenogears.  That had it's share of cliches but it broke through them or circumvented them pretty well.

And it was one of the first that I can think of where you end up more or less fighting god.

Hmm I liked Shenmue 2 which is not a real traditional jRPG. I've only played one real jRPG which is FF8 and I loved it. I compare every jRPG to FF8 for some reason. jRPG's are loved just for it's excellent production values & story direction. Linear & Cliche or not.

FF VIII is one of the best. Better than 7, at least on gameplay and technically.

I know the answer to this one. In Jrpgs you get to play a story that is dirrectly connected to the charracters. In Western rpgs you make your own charracter and just hop along a story that isn't realy connected to your charracter, your basicly acting like a mercenary playing along something that doesn't realy connect to you. Like Oblivian, diablo, NVN etc.The storry isn't dirrectly connected to your charracter, thus making it a less feel for the story.

But for that matter, in JRPGs, you have almost no input as to what happens in the story. The characters make up their own minds, leaving you feeling disconnected from the experience.
In other words, you're just reading the book, you're not writing your own book (as you are in WRPGs).

And some of the best RPGs are those that give you a purpose beyond 'mercenary', while still making mercenary a valid option - Fallout, Baldurs Gate and Planescape: Torment are great examples of this.

Looks like someone's jealous that japanese game developers are better at writing stories than him.
(because in WRPGs you make your own story...but it always sucks...get it?)

I don't agree(well intirely). I definitely used to like the genre more, they actually lost some of their appeal to me over the years. Not because it was the same but because the appeal itself in them has changed and was more varied in the past.

Yes there are times today when I play them and I actually think dozens of times (Oh well I have seen that before) or it having strange/mysterious characters with some dark secret that you actually don't care at all about(or the character itself) because it will probably turn out to be something completely overdone in the genre.

I am quite actually sick of all these mysterious characters wich are now overdone in the genre, there was a time you know, when characters in alot of rpgs had no secrets at all and their character was only better because of it, not to mention the actuall plot or overall story of the game was better, they were usually better in this same category I'm complaining about. It felt more enjoyable as well, with more cheerfull  and colorfull characters and the ones that had those were actually good and you could actually relate to them, because it was more in the reach of any normal personality to relate.

You can generalise for any genre. Everyone has different tastes, so why attack them because you dissagree?

I for the most part think JRPG's are pathetic.  They are for kiddies, boring, graphics suck.  There is a lot of people wanting Blue Dragon for the 360, I'm not one of them but admitt I might buy it if I can get it at a good deal, but will never pay full price for it.

I like WRPG's a lot better, more for older crowds and much more involving.

But this is just my opinion, and just like bung holes, everyone has one.

So what ever style you like, that is all that matters, and your opinion is just that, an opinion.

Because there emotional?

That's the reason why FFX is my favourite game of all time,Also jrpgs just stay with you (in memorys) more so than any other type of game, this is also why jrpg's are my fav genre.

Maybe because people like the story, the presentation, and the overall experience? JRPGs aren't anywhere near my favorite genre, but I do like to put one in and enjoy one every once and a while.
