I see no reason to even lable them RPGs.

theirs no depth to them and really are EXTREMELY LINEAR. A thing I hate about most Rpgs. Really Why can't Japan give us a good RPG like Fallout,Plansecape,or baulders gate.

they last longer Overall and are a better buy for most. the Onley RPG I liked that was linear maybe was Paper mario. but it felt diffrent and was actually kinda fun.

It might be the fact that im a PC gamer and have played the older RPGs and the consle ones I play are all JRPGs:(

Really.. IMHO overrall I just think Jrpgs are not what I would call "good RPGs"

anyone agree somewhat? Remember its just my opinion:o

They are a fantasy getaway.

My favourite jrpg was Skies of Arcadia for Gamecube. If they remade it, I would be all over it.

Why do people play WRPGs? Why do they play games in general?

Personally I prefer my character not to be a mute having one sided confersation in his 40+ quest. But thats just me.

That and Im just not good with Western rpgs. their less linear so typically Im not sure where to go. Another thing is every WRPG i've played has long load times and terrible combat system that put me to sleep.

Jrpgs are typically more focused on the cast of characters while wrpgs are typically more centered around events.

People may not like the linearity, bu I really don't mind it. So long as there isnt constant back tracking.

Im more interested in the story and the combat system.

Point still stands, go play some, then tell us why you think they suck, and also give examples.

Its your choice, but YOU are missing out

While Im pretty much on your side in the JRPG argument, you have to admit that alot of JRPGs now a day are really generic.

It's an awesome genre and one that I'm a big fan of. They can't really be compared with WRPGs, I consider them to be a COMPLETELY different genre. WRPGs are more about choice, you can choose to be good and evil and stuff like that, and they usually have alot of depth and are very non-linear. JRPGs are alot different though, but I still like the gameplay and storylines. Although recently we haven't been seeing alot of great JRPGs, the genre is moving pretty slowly right now, the PS2 days were so golden (I think 75% of my PS2 games are JRPGs), but now it's so rare, I don't know why...

Well TBH, anything different is now 'unique' due to the trash we get nowadays

But with that said, we havent really had any JRPGs this gen. But yeah, sure JRPGs are gimped sometimes when it comes to customisation, they make the most of what they have and that gives way to tonnes of strategy

I like them because the characters are usually interesting and so are the stories. Right now im playing Persona 3 FES. Now that's a great example of a good JRPG.

There's a lot more strategizing involved in the combat usually, and the characters and stories are much more well developed despite being more linear (linearity leads to stronger storytelling experiences anyway). There's a lot more number crunching involved and I guess it suits some people better than others. I personally like them a lot, but haven't played a good one in awhile.

It's very obvious that most if not all JRPGs haters don't know what there talking about half the time. An jump to conclusions. An either have only played 1 JRPG and consider them all to be the same or they haven't played one at all.

I also think they are pretty lame (atleast the ones I have played) - crappy story, lame characters, really really lame dialogues , totally boring combat (although this is a issue in most wrpgs also) ect

also strategy in jrpgs

Why do people play any genre? People have different tastes in games. Some like JRPGs, some like WRPGs, some like platformers, some like FPSs, etc. There are also people out there, like you who don't have interest in those genres. Doesn't mean they're bad, just doesn't appeal to them, because different genres appeal to different kinds of people.

They're linear to a certain extent. But most of the good ones open up near the end, and that is when you can spend hours and hours searching for goodies and weirdo tough bosses and other fun & addictive stuff. WRPG tend to avoid these good gameplay moments.

Which JRPG did you try? Maybe if you played a few of the very best like Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Dragon Quest VIII or something in the Strategy RPG realm like Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea, you might have a better idea of whether you could like this genre or not.
