He said it sold over 22 million units and has over 50 AA games.
The PSP was supposed to slaughter the DS. But it didn't. That is why it failed.-The-G-Man-
Oh please, gamecube and Xbox wanted to destroy PS2 but they didn't. Guess they are failures too

I think Sony blatantly stated they were going to kill the DS with the PSP, if memory serves. If they didn't, forget what I said. I don't know if Nintendo or Microsoft said they were going to kill the PS2, but if they did they failed, too.
If a company says their system is going to kill this one but doesn't, it fails. Otherwise, other systems are just there to compete, not kill each other.

To call PSP a blatent failure for any reason is foolish. It has done better than ANY other non nintendo Handheld, and gets bashed way more than deserved.

I guess Sony got arrogant at that time cuz of PS2's success and now they're having trouble with the PS3.Â

It's not a blantant failure. It was actually competition in the handheld market, something Nintendo never had. But it was a failure at what it set out to do, which was take the crown from Nintendo's head in the handheld market.
Thing i'm a bit confused about is why do people say the PSP has failed when this current generation of portable systems hasn't ended yet?
Just wait until the next gen of portables come out and discontinue manufacturing then we shall see how they both turned out.Â

The first is kind of right but the others are just BS,The umd format failed not the PSP.Also they created a multimedia handheld. You failed.
The PSP was supposed to slaughter the DS. But it didn't. That is why it failed.-The-G-Man-And there were just as many people saying it would turn out like the N-Gage. It didn't. That's why that logic failed.

Maybe I should have explained this a little better....
The PSP didn't fail COMPLETELY. It failed at killing the DS, which it is safe to say it didn't do.
No not really! Yes the DS is winning but the PSP isn't far behind in sales especally now when there are alot of good games starting to come out now. sparkypantsDS = 40 million PSP = 20 million Isnt far behind? :o
There are simply not enough awsome games to attract most gamers. That is the only reason that I do not have one right now.

now look at the game sales.

http://vgchartz.com/japweekly.php
psp is in single digit percent.
ds is in the 40's for percent of software for the week.
it's failed as a game system. it's doing okay as a piece of multimedia hardware.Â
How many times do I have to explain this?
Okay, here's the deal. Sony had 3 goals for the PSP.
1) make UMDÂ the successful format
2) beat the DS in sales
3) make a profit
#1 and #2 didn't happen, and I'm very doubtful about #3.
So after that Sony decided to go for taking a chunk out of the DS's sales.
sadly, the DS soon became the most successful and highest selling handheld console nintendo had ever made. Not only did the PSP fail to grab a chunk out of the DS's sales. But the DS actually made the handheld market GROW. The DS was more successful with compition then the GBC/GBA ever was without it.
The PSP failed to meet it's goals, that is the definition of a failure. Â
love my psp, sure it doesnt beat DS sales, but compared to everything else PSP sells great. ds is just so far ahead of everything now though.AdamPA1006
as hardware the psp is selling better than most systems this gen except the DS and the wii. but then why are software sales much below that of the 360 (psp has double it's userbase). simply because the users aren't buying the games. they bought the psp to play movies not games. it fails as a gaming system.Â
The PSP may not have sold as many as the NDS but it's doing great capturing the core market. Many of my favorite games like MGS Portable Op, Pirates!, Burnout, Outrun, Capcom Collections simply cannot be done right on the NDS.
It's chipped a sizable chunk off a market dominated by Nintendo and IMO it's a huge success.

It was hyped as a Nintendo Gameboy/DS killer and did nothing of the sort except get killed itself. It had a shoddy movie format in umd which failed miserably. It had a shoddy game format which had excessive loading. It had a shoddy mp3 format which couldnt hold a candle to an ipod. Its losing to Nintendo in America, Europe, AND Japan. The PSP is an 'ok' portable machine and wont be remembered in the future because it did nothing exceptional. People remember Super Mario, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Halo 1, Resident Evil 1. There are no 'classic' PSP games that we will still talk about in 10 years. PSP = failureCarmilla31
yes UMD failed, any "special" person can tell you that. but you arent restricted to using UMD for movies you know. rip and paste.
the loading thing is only up to the devs. lots of PSP games have virtually no load times. please dont play crappy games. its bad for you
shoddy mp3 format? i dont even understand this. MP3 is a compressionformat, sony didnt make a new format for music. Ipods are horribly over priced and people complain about the PSP's small screen for videos.
and yes PSP does have classic games. every system has them.Â
