Yes, it's actually doing quite well for Sony's first handheld against the king of handheld gaming.

PSP is the best hand-held for long trips. I dont care what ANYONE says. Movies, Music, Internet, Photos, Games, what more could you want? Plus most places like Trains, planes, hotels, etc have places to plug it in and recharge it...so...

It is a great handheld. It just didn't live up to the "nintendo killer" hype.

It failed at what it was supposed to do. It was supposed to destroy the DS and was hyped by most people to do just that. It failed miserably at that. AS a console, it's relatively successful, though a disappointment in comparison with the PS1/PS2.

  • Well with the whole bringing the handheld out of the ghetto and destroying the DS it failed.
  • With creating a multimedia handheld it failed
  • UMD movie format failed

But at least it succeeded with games and sales.

It did do a huge amount of damage market-share-wise to a market previously dominated by nintendo. Has any other handheld came anywhere close to nintendo besides Sony? nope.

Some stupid Fanboys a few years back (still remembered, i forgot where forum was that) said PSP will crush DS and will reign supreme in the handheld wars just cuz of GTA,M-rated titles, graphics and others. Sony even said people will want a PSP on christmas but they're wrong. DS got hotter than PSP on christmas. It sold better than the PSP. For Sony, it failed their expectations. For fanboys who think it will defeat DS, it failed. But its still alive with the Nintendo DS now with some great games.

I think Sony blatantly stated they were going to kill the DS with the PSP, if memory serves.  If they didn't, forget what I said.  I don't know if Nintendo or Microsoft said they were going to kill the PS2, but if they did they failed, too.

If a company says their system is going to kill this one but doesn't, it fails.  Otherwise, other systems are just there to compete, not kill each other.

To call PSP a blatent failure for any reason is foolish. It has done better than ANY other non nintendo Handheld, and gets bashed way more than deserved.

I guess Sony got arrogant at that time cuz of PS2's success and now they're having trouble with the PS3.

It's not a blantant failure.  It was actually competition in the handheld market, something Nintendo never had.  But it was a failure at what it set out to do, which was take the crown from Nintendo's head in the handheld market.

Thing i'm a bit confused about is why do people say the PSP has failed when this current generation of portable systems hasn't ended yet?

Just wait until the next gen of portables come out and discontinue manufacturing then we shall see how they both turned out.

I like the psp but hate the umd format. Load times are just to long in certain games (metal slug) and quicker in others. I know I will like it (the psp) once sony opens the door to the store from the psp itself.

Maybe I should have explained this a little better....

The PSP didn't fail COMPLETELY.  It failed at killing the DS, which it is safe to say it didn't do.

It also didnt live to its hype. For most gamers it kinda did prove the theroy gameplay>graphics. It even came out the door earlier with online then the DS. The problem is and ill always say this.......its about games. PSP failed to realise that. Wii it exploring other aspects but it doesn't go out of convinence.(forecast and news channel). Another big problem was that it realy only appealed to the mature audience. Nintendo is just quality and sony isnt gonna beat that with more media features. Thats y u can say it failed....its just gettin by the generation.

It was hyped as a Nintendo Gameboy/DS killer and did nothing of the sort except get killed itself. It had a shoddy movie format in umd which failed miserably. It had a shoddy game format which had excessive loading. It had a shoddy mp3 format which couldnt hold a candle to an ipod. Its losing to Nintendo in America, Europe, AND Japan. The PSP is an 'ok' portable machine and wont be remembered in the future because it did nothing exceptional. People remember Super Mario, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Halo 1, Resident Evil 1. There are no 'classic' PSP games that we will still talk about in 10 years. PSP = failure

No not really! Yes the DS is winning but the PSP isn't far behind in sales especally now when there are alot of good games starting to come out now. In fact I own a DS and Im a little jelouse of PSP owners nowadays I mean its a really good system and it has more "on the go" features then the DS its more then just a gaming devise...its the ultimate traviling buddy. Also Im a little disapointed with the DS. Why, mostly because a majority of the game use the bottom screen as a map and not somthing that allows you to interact with the game...and that was the reason I got a DS!!

There are simply not enough awsome games to attract most gamers. That is the only reason that I do not have one right now.

There's a very strong argument to be made that the PSP tarnished public perception of the PlayStation brand, causing additional difficulties for the PS3.  This seems to be most true in the Japanese market.

I like mine, Its quite the swiss army knife of handhelds.  I like have about 15 UMD movies, and 11 games.  I still think its awesome.  I had a DS, and played the castlevanias, but other than that, it didnt appeal to me as much as PSP.

anytime sony try to bring out a brand killer they fail

their tony hawk killer failed...
their nfl blitz killer failed...
their zelda killer failed...
their halo killer failed...
their GBA killer failed...

whats killing the PSP is sony's arrogance.

now look at the game sales.

http://vgchartz.com/aweekly.php

http://vgchartz.com/japweekly.php

psp is in single digit percent.

ds is in the 40's for percent of software for the week.

it's failed as a game system. it's doing okay as a piece of multimedia hardware.

How many times do I have to explain this?

Okay, here's the deal. Sony had 3 goals for the PSP.

1) make UMD the successful format

2) beat the DS in sales

3) make a profit

#1 and #2 didn't happen, and I'm very doubtful about #3.

So after that Sony decided to go for taking a chunk out of the DS's sales.

sadly, the DS soon became the most successful and highest selling handheld console nintendo had ever made. Not only did the PSP fail to grab a chunk out of the DS's sales. But the DS actually made the handheld market GROW. The DS was more successful with compition then the GBC/GBA ever was without it.

The PSP failed to meet it's goals, that is the definition of a failure.

as hardware the psp is selling better than most systems this gen except the DS and the wii. but then why are software sales much below that of the 360 (psp has double it's userbase). simply because the users aren't buying the games. they bought the psp to play movies not games. it fails as a gaming system.

The PSP may not have sold as many as the NDS but it's doing great capturing the core market. Many of my favorite games like MGS Portable Op, Pirates!, Burnout, Outrun, Capcom Collections simply cannot be done right on the NDS.

It's chipped a sizable chunk off a market dominated by Nintendo and IMO it's a huge success.

Look yes 20 million is a big gap but thats realy not that bad considering this is Sonys First handheld...I mean nintendo has had like what 5 hand helds(if you dont include Pocket or SP). to mannage to do this well for only there first try isnt that bad...I mean they have managed to break Nintendo's Handheld Monopoly!!

Because the press idiotically hyped it as the DS-killer against all logic and some fanboys grasped onto that. It failed to "kill" the DS as these "killers" always do so its regarded as a failure despite being the most successful competitor to Nintendo's handheld dominance to the tune of 14 Million units (this being 2 years compared to 7 or so for Gamegear).

PSP = failureCarmilla31

yes UMD failed, any "special" person can tell you that. but you arent restricted to using UMD for movies you know. rip and paste.

the loading thing is only up to the devs. lots of PSP games have virtually no load times. please dont play crappy games. its bad for you

shoddy mp3 format? i dont even understand this. MP3 is a compressionformat, sony didnt make a new format for music. Ipods are horribly over priced and people complain about the PSP's small screen for videos.

and yes PSP does have classic games. every system has them.Â
