Its much cheaper since you need a pc anyway. Games just seem more addicting on PC I have played 500 hours of one of my pc games and am still not bored of it. Were as console gamers seem to buy more games than they can play through and the games cost a lot more. I think console only gamers think its more expensive because they hear of people that upgrade their computer just so they will have top of the line parts I am planning to wait at least 5 years before I buy a new computer not planning any upgrades other than harddrive upgrades if I run out of space.

People say it is more expensive...because it is. Shocking, yes? You need a monitor (1), you need a high-end computer to play the newest games (2), you need to constantly upgrade it with new programs and other stuff (3). I'm writing this on my dinky laptop, so those 3 points will already make me spend more money than I've ever spent on a console in my life. People were complaining about the PS3 being too expensive, but PCs are just way more expensive.

PC gaming is more expensive. I'm a PC gamer and I don't even try to deny that. But hey, you get what you pay for. And Steam sales don't make me save money, I just spend more on games I wouldn't buy otherwise. It's definitely a good thing for the gaming aficionado inside me but not for my wallet.

because it is....I now need to upgrade to windows 7 for some games and upgrade my processor and blah blah just to get the best out of it and I upgraded 2 years ago and I could probably use a better graphics card too and I have an HD4850.....I bought a 360 in 05 and that was it and I already had the HDTV for other reasons

chikenfriedrice
You do not need to upgrade to win7 for gaming. Windows Xp an OS from 2001 still runs All games out there and i mean All Also you do not need a new VGA unlsess you wanna play at 2560x1600, Even at 1080p that 4850 can still play almost all games with the exception of 2-3 games at all high settings ( even those few games you cant play at all high setting you can still play them with mainly high settings)

gigabyte ma-790xt-ud4p

phenom II 955 be 3.2 ghz

sunbeam core contact freezer

4 gig ddr3 corsair xms3 1333 mhz effective

ati radeon 4850 1 gig ddr3

ocz stealth xtreme 600 watt psu

coolermaster elite 335 case

aoc 24 inch widescreen monitor 1200p native

worked out about a hundred cheaper than the ps3 slim 250 and the tv and the pc total destroys any console :)

Because it is in a sense. Games are cheaper, DLC is usually free and online play is ususally free. However, hardware and maintinence is expensive, power bills will raise quite a bit, and upgrades every fewe months cost hundreds of dollars. Also, games like WoW cost monthly fees.

This is why PC is a niche market.

This myth that PCs dramatically increase your power bill is getting out of hand. At one of my homes, we have five PCs running at any given time. The power bill isn't all that high. In my other home, I rarely use a PC and use consoles. They are both within the same city so the county/city ordinances are the same. The electricity bill is only marginally more at the house with FIVE PCs running at the same time. Only marginally. I'm curious if you people even pay power bills and don't just have your parents do it. Oh, and you do not have to ugprade every few months.

Sure PC gaming is more expensive maybe $600 for a good pc. But with steam deals PC games are much cheaper than consoles. Also since everyone on this forum has a PC it seems redudant having a PC and a console. PC gaming is also a better option for some people. Suppose you do not have much money, you are starting out your career away from home. I would rather have a high end PC than anything else; as it serves as a TV, a computer for work, websurfing and emails and a gaming platform.

Sausageson

What makes you think everyone that uses this forum has a pc? Some people do their forum posting from their PS3 and tv, which serves as a tv (with dvd/bluray), a computer for work (like that astrophysicist who replaced his supercomputer nodes with ps3s, or the feds using ps3s to hack passwords on confiscated computers), websurfing, emails, and a gaming platform. You're right, it does seem redundant having a PC and a console, guess I'll stick with the PS3.

PC Gaming can be cheaper than console gaming. Let's go over a year of comparing console costs to PC costs. You spend $600-$700 for a pretty decent gaming PC, and then you spend $50-$100 for additional games. PC Games are generally much cheaper, and the prices drop much quicker. And let's not forget about the insane amount of free content that you can get with a PC. Xbox 360 = $300 Xbox Live = $100 (At start of the year, and end of the year) Additional Controller = $40 6-10 Games = $360-$600 Adds up to around $800-$1040 $600-$700 + World of Warcraft ($40) = $640-$740. With that alone, you could be pretty much set. If you wanted a bunch of PC Games, you could probably get about 5 awesome ones for $100. Anyways, over time you get more bang for your buck. Since we don't live in a world where you buy something and time stops, I think that's much more important than initial costs. And for the arguably cheaper price of PC Gaming, you get better graphics, free mods, free games, and the best online.

Sure. Stormrise also requires DX10, and while they're DX9 titles, Halo 2 and Shadowrun both require Vista. And you specifically said "all games out there and I mean all". That's all, twice, so don't pretend you didn't mean all. You're wrong.

PC gaming is more expensive with the hardware and upgrades the consoles.

I just prefer to play my games on a game console. It's more convient and

most of my friends and family play console games.

It's not so much the expense as much as it is the time and effort needed. I'll play any PC game that can run on my meh laptop though.

I don't get why people compare

(1) (sub-)720p, Marginal amount of AA if not any, any amount of anisotropic filtering, 30/60 FPS max, mininal View Distance aswell as minimal Detail Distance, DX9, weird shadows and many more ...

with,

(2) 1080p+, 4-16AA, 16x Anisotropic Filtering, +60 FPS, maximal View Distance, Maximum Detail Distance, DX10/11, tesselation and much more ...

and expect the same price tag?Why should a product that can do so much more then just gaming while delivering better graphics, physics, special effects etc be be cheaper then a console? Seriously.

Having said that my +2 years old rig with Q6600, 8800GT 512MB, 2GB RAM runs almost every game at 1080p. My guess is that if you need both a PC and something to game on you'd be cheaper out with a gaming PC. The difference between a gaming PC and a normal desktop tends to be 1 element, the almighty graphics card. Couple that with VERY cheap games aswell as the occasional -80% sales on Steam.

PC Gaming simply has a slightly higher initial cost, but in the long run it's cheaper. Unless you get one of those 8k$ Alienware gaming PCs, 'cause we all know we need one of those to run Crysis. Sad thing the're completely obselete after 3 months. Right? ^_^

It's called double standards. When the PS3 was $400, it was cheaper than the $200 Xbox 360 because it had more features, but a $600 PC is way more expensive than a $300 PS3 no matter how you try to "spin" it. After all, you don't need a PC in your house when you have a PS3, right?

Are you really going to try and make that argument? Saying consoles as a whole are inferior to PCs is both stupid and is in the process disregarding opinion. Do you know why I don't want to be a PC gamer, even if the price would be a bit lower than consoles? The games on it simply do not appeal to me. I feel the amount of quality exclusives for me are few and far between, I don't like the keyboard and mouse format and I honestly don't care about better graphics on multiplats. Are games like FFX, FFVII (the best version), LittleBigPlanet, MGS3, MGS4, Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Uncharted 1 and 2, Resistance 1 and 2, the Gran Turismo series, God of War series, most NES, SNES andMegadrive cla$$ics (pirated games and portsare, of course, not included), Star Ocean series, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Crash Bandicoot PS1 titles, Spyro PS1 titles, the Metroid Prime series, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Demon's Souls, the Jak and Daxter series and Ratchet & Clank series available on the PC? Didn't think so. And those are just some examples, and I'm not including games coming out this year. Liking the PC more than consoles is absolutely fine, and I couldn't care less. I have lovely memories of Age of Empires 2, Age of Mythology, Civilization 3, Starcraft and Warcraft 3, among many other games, which I played back in the day on my PC. But when you go out of your way to bash consoles, that's just ignorant. Are we forgetting that consoles started the gaming business for real (hint: it was the NES).

Perhaps that has to do with you not being into PC gaming all that much? PC gaming birthed gaming, and when you console gamers ended up saturating the market WE kept it on life support.

Actually, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, a game has the necessary quality of being for amusement. If I do not find a tech demo amusing, it isn't a game. A " game" is a highly subjective term.

[QUOTE="Vandalvideo"][QUOTE="lowe0"] The hell it is. If you can play it, it's a game. Tell you what: you go march yourself right over to the Futuremark forums and tell the developers that what they busted their asses to make isn't actually a game. See how that turns out for you.

Actually, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, a game has the necessary quality of being for amusement. If I do not find a tech demo amusing, it isn't a game. A " game" is a highly subjective term.

So if I didnt find say Crysis amusing, its not a game?

Hah! Forgetting the Commodore, Amiga, and all the fine PC-engine gaming platforms are we?

I said started it "for real". Not the same in any way. Of course gaming existed before the NES, I have a rather good grasp on what consoles existed before and after certain consoles. But before NES (more specifically, Super Mario Bros.), gaming was in a huge slump, and many predicted its extinction. Don't deny the NES's influence, that's just silly.

I was gaming way back then and neither of them were as popular with gamers as the NES. It totally made gaming mainstream.

Perhaps that has to do with you not being into PC gaming all that much? PC gaming birthed gaming, and when you console gamers ended up saturating the market WE kept it on life support.

Now I fear PC gaming is the thing that has to be kept on life support.

Whether you're actually amused doesn't change whether it was intended for amusement. I'm certain that there are plenty of games you've enjoyed that wouldn't amuse me in the slightest - for example, Cryostasis **** sucked ass. Does that make it not a game?

[QUOTE="lowe0"][QUOTE="farrell2k"] 5 PCs will likely use less than 1000W/hr. You vacuum cleaner uses more.

Idle, or load? Idle, a gaming PC will use ~140W. Under load, it's more like ~400W.

BS! Its highly unlikely to be pulling 400W all the time at load. Peaks and troughs my friend.

If by real you mean reality, then the computer is the one that started it "for real".

Intended for amusement isn't part of the definition. It is "played for amusement". The actor is the player, not the maker of the product itself. If the player does not find it amusing, atleast according to the OED, it isn't a game.

Thank Microsoft for their ridiculous pricing. :P

£100 for a 120Gb hard drive is a complete rip off. I can get a 2Tb drive for that price!

if the PC is the one on life support, then I guess consoles are 6 feet under. Especially ocnsidering we have the most exclusives and highly rated titles, and the highest revenue stream of any platform.

You're thinking of the Magnavox Oddysey, not the nes.

It seems some misintererpreted what I said. I meant "for real". Gaming was on the verge of extinction before the NES came (it really was, look it up), thanks to an explosive number of consoles and bad games. Was the Odyssey popular? No. If we are going for starting it all, Brown Box was the first real console. It was just not released to the public. NES made gaming mainstream, and that's not just my opinion. All gaming sites pretty much agree on this fact, along with the general public.
