[QUOTE="calvinsora"]I think you already know that Nintendo made enormous profits from the NES, which in turn spurred it on in the gaming field. Compare that to Atari, which suffered quite a loss because of the 5200, and the relative unknown status of BA, Vectrex and FCF sales as a whole. Are you saying the NES wasn't more prosperous? Other companies had to fight tooth and claw just to survive against the NES. Atari (the biggest component in the second generation) isn't even on the console market anymore, but Nintendo is. What does that suggest?Vandalvideo
How am I supposed to know it if I don't have that informatin? Provide the relative earnings in profit for each company at that time. PS: I already know you won't be able to, since that information is highly proprietary.

Of course, I can't provide straight profit, but that in turn makes a claim in the opposite direction almost impossible to verify. I'm just saying: profits are, in the case of such enormous sales, almost guaranteed. Nintendo is one of the biggest companies today, and are you really saying that isn't because of its incredible profit as a company? The NES simply boosted the popularity of the gaming industry, as related to the sales, outselling ALL previous consoles combined. That is something that can be put forth. Let's also add to that the fact that very big industry names began on the NES, i.e. Legend of Zelda, Mario (Donkey Kong only presented him as Jumpman, until he was called Mario later on), Metroid, Contra and Megaman. That can't exactly be said about the previous consoles, at least not in as big a way.

I feel I have said all I can. Sorry, but it's getting late, so I must retire. But thanks for taking the time to partake in the argument. It offers different perspectives of a matter, and helps all concerned to know the mind of other people. Good night.

You're wrong, profits are not gauranteed in enormous sales. Especialyl if they are merely selling their product at a loss to gain a user base. Sony did that this generation with their Playstation 3. It is entirely reasonable to think that Nintendo may have doen the same thing. Oh, and again, popularity is entirely up for debate. You've merely been talking about platform sales, not individual game sales. The mere fact that Nintendo's NES sold alot does not mean games sold alot. Not only that, but the mere fact that there is more popularity does not equate to a fact that during Nintendo's time the industry was booming more. If revenue was higher in the preceeding generations, then the industry was booming more.
