Why do people use shooters to display how good the graphics are on their system?

I own a ps3 and I am tired of people refering to Killzone 2 or MGS4 as the pinnacle of (console) gaming graphics. Dont take this wrong because I proudly own and enjoy both games ( top 6% in Killzone 2 the first week) but statistically the pinnacle are games such as MLB 09:The Show and others which run at a native 1080p 60fps resolution. So please someone tell me why even though the shooters named boast amazing graphics they are inferior to MLB and others(Wipeout HD, Gran Turismo 5: Prolouge, NBA 09 ) that run at 1080p 60fps and are still used as examples of the best graphical acheivements on a particular system?

Because shooters are more popular on SW. GT 5 will be graphics king and you can quote me on that.

Those kinds of games often display the most amount of crap being thrown on a screen at a time while looking great technically/artistically ..... and if it can run smoothly then it is an impressive thing. I wouldn't worry too much about 720p/1080p ..or... 30fps/60fps ...... there's a lot more to graphics than that. Hope that helps you.

Because shooters usually imploy the latest graphics tech. Just because a game runs at 1080p and at 60 fps doesnt mean it's graphically better then a game running at 720p and 30 fps. Shooters usually get the newest graphical bells and whistles first before any other genre when it comes to lighting, particle effects, physics, etc.. That's why they are usually brought up in graphics comparisons. Not to mention they usually have the most going onscreen then most other games.

Yeah it is a very good looking game, but it doesnt have some of the bleeding edge tech that some of these shooters have. I guess at face value MLB 09 The Show may be one of the best looking console games, but when it comes to shooters they have graphical features and effects that may be more subtle and taken for granted. Like for instance in Killzone 2 the smoke effects are unrivaled, the even realistically move apart when an object passes through.

I agree, thanks but can you imagine the smoke effects that will be in Killzone 3 it will be on par with the 2005 cg trailer.

Just look at Crysis for your answer. Shooters usually set the standard in graphics. There are a few, like Empire: Total War and such, but these types of games don't have the intimate details that shooters usually carry.

Shooters usually have the best graphics because every shooter is linear.

Oh yeah, those cookie cutter, repeating crowds in the stadiums with repeating animations look really sweet. MLB looks nice, but its sure is not all that spectacular....not much is moving on the screen...it should look nice.

Graphics king? Or do you mean console graphics king? Becuase GT 5 looks great but it won't look better than a game like crysis.

Because shooters are more demanding than other types of games, and have mroe detailed environments.

Racing games should never be included because all racing games look good, because they don't need to much details on cars and don't need to much environments detail since they go in around the same place over and over

Shooters are among the fastest-evolving genres when it comes to technological achievements and graphical upgrades. Other genres follow them. And, generally speaking, shooters usually have a lot more going on the screen as opposed to other genres (explosions, enemies, textures, draw distance, etc.). There are things that increase a game's visual appeal not through sheer graphics alone, but through other methods, such as dynamic shadows and lighting, adaptive A.I., destructible environments, non-scripted gameplay approaches, post-processing effects, draw distance, scale, and many other traits.

Shooters are probably the most technologically intestive. Almost by definition of the genre, theyrequire a 3D environment with a scale and scope that dwarfs most other genres.
