Sure. Read up on Metcalfe's Law. Or, to save you a trip to Wikipedia, the more of "our" consoles are sold, the more people we'll have to play against online, the more developers will want to release games for the platform, etc..
Well, it's difficult to argue specifically about quality when alot of the people here don't own/play all the consoles/games. So sales and ratings are something we can use in stead of actual discussion.

Any true gamer probably has a favorite game that never got a sequel because it didn't sell well enough.

Along with being a discussion board, SW is also a game. The people who like talking about sales either like analyzing those types of things or are contributing to the SW game.
When was the last time you seen a turbographx16,Sega,or Atari console in the stores? That is why sales matter. Sales matter to all of us no matter what anyone thinks. Really kind of a dumb question and im from the old school world of..."there are no dumb questions".

Why do level 9's believe they are better than a level 3's. You can't consider yourself better than another human being. That's immoral. You have no more human rights than I do buddy.
Consoles that don't sell as well as the competition have trouble gaining 3rd party support. Or if they get the support, the games tend to become multiplats (see Resident Evil 4 or Final Fantasy XIII.)
I care about sales. They give money to the people who manufacture the consoles and make the games and give them large installed bases to justify the porting of games or even exclusive releases. They're a huge deal in system wars. The thing is, though, that all of this system warring itself is counterproductive in some ways to gaming as an art form. Although, you could look at it as another form of capitalistic competition and therefore a good thing for the industry.

More like just a bunch of fanboys. Know what i'm sayin? That is counter productive.
Sales matter to us in the long run indirectly because If a Companies game fail to sell they have less obligation to work there best to release a game that won't sell which would then limit the quality of the game we get as gamers...

that's not true this gen. though... wii is having the most trouble getting quality 3rd party support, it doesn't even get that many multiplats.

Good games, good graphics, and good sales. For example. The dreamcast. Great games. Sales fizzled out. Lost. The xbox. Great games. Great graphics. Didnt sell. It lost. If the mass market doesnt buy your console, or game, its not successful. You could have a AAAAAAE, but if it sells 10k copies, the masses has no interest in it. The masses are important in system wars. Were only a very small percentage, and the majority of people here hate anything popular. So sales are a great way to tell if something is popular. But, you have to understand too, ratings also count. But if you only get one, your not gonna do to well. Good enough for you?
